Roman Polanski denied chance to close US rape case

I agree that Polanski had a fucked up life with his mother dying in a concentration camp and with poor Sharon Tate being killed by the Manson family along with her and Roman's unborn child. However, even though I'm sympathetic for how tragic his life has been, those dark events do not make him unaccountable for his crimes. The man drugged and raped a thirteen year old girl. I hate that the director of my favorite film (Chinatown) committed such a monstrous crime. but he still did it and should pay for it.

How about we just stick to the facts and don't throw baseless accusations? It's OK to be mad at Polanski for what he did, but come on. That wasn't necessary.

Alright, alright. Calm down. It was just a passing remark - not a direct accusation. Although it is Polanski so I'm not gonna lose sleep over it :p

Being a shitty human being and a criminal doesn't stop him from being extremely talented.

It should stop him from receiving the most prestigious award for his craft when he can't even be there to accept it and others could who were just as worthy of the award.

Fuck him, pisses me off the fact Hollywood acknowledges his existence. So what if he's a so called "great director", he raped and drugged a child...

I hope someone would drug him and throw him on a plane to the US.

Marlon Brando, George C. Scott and Woody Allen have never accepted their own awards (Scott even sent his back). Not exactly the same situation as Polanski, but still.

It's not even like it was some automatic thing. People actually had to say to themselves, "You know who directed the best movie this year? That child rapist. I'm going to put his name down on my ballot."

But he is a great director, and the Pianist is a fantastic film. Just because Polanski is a an awful human being...it doesn't, objectively speaking, diminish the quality of the direction in The Pianist.

I think you're right

the point of failure was him being hired for the job in the first place

If you're good enough to be hired for the job, then you should be hired for the job regardless of criminal past. As long as you've shown no sides of repeating those mistakes, obviously, as to not jeopardize whatever business I am hiring you for.

The Polanski case is a bit different though. If he had gone to jail and rehabilitated himself and the like, I would have no problem hiring him to direct my movie. Not sure how I would react to the Polanski situation, though.

Holy hell. I had never even HEARD of this before. Shows how great of a job Hollywood does covering this stuff up. I was always a huge fan of his movies too. Not a fan of this dude anymore, that's for sure.

Sure, great movie, well directed. I'm merely addressing the appropriateness of giving a known child rapist the most prestigious award in your craft, and a standing ovation besides. Especially in light of all the hand-wringing that went on about honoring someone who "named names."

No, it was never a secret. Back when it happened, it was highly publicized. Once he fled to Europe, that's when people got really upset about it.

A lot of people at the time did give him sympathy because his pregnant wife was murdered by the Manson clan, which was also highly publicized. So much of his life, including his tragedies and successes, have always been in the spotlight. He's definitely had a messed up life, but at the end of the day, he refused to take responsibility for his actions.

Not that I think the guy deserves a second chance after fleeing for all these years but I don't think he some kind of monster. The dudes pregnant wife was killed by the Manson family a few years earlier so I'm sure that messed him up. Just a terrible situation all around.

Child anal rape defense force? What he did is monstrous, absolutely. Disgusting that you try to ameliorate and make excuses.

Now why can't a bounty hunter go and nab his ass and yank him back.

I hope this scum gets his day in jail and a many more than that.

Unlike a lot of criminals he has money and people who protect him. Also as the article posted earlier show, the French are really weird when it comes to people they consider artists.

It's not like it happened the week-of or anything, this happened YEARS after his wife was murdered.

The Allen stuff is more ambiguous. Soon-Yi was an adult at the time, but Dylan maintains she was molested as a child. Woody and Mia were going through a incredibly messy break-up and they both accuse the other "grooming" Dylan to get back at them (as I understand it). Woody also says he never had a fatherly relationship with Soon-Yi and hardly knew her when she was younger, because she was Mia's kid, and that his relationship was distant. They were never married, either.

Seems like when you're rich and famous you can get away with anything.
You sound surprised. Money can definitely buy your way out of jail unless you just straight up murdered someone and even then you can maybe plead afluenza lol.

Umm it was never a secret and Hollywood didn't cover up anything. Dude had a highly publicized trial and was convicted but fled back to france before sentencing. I honestly don't know how you didn't know any of this is you are such a big fan of his.

How did he even get to France? Surely breaking bail is grounds for extradition?

Some countries don't extradite their own citizens I think. Probably the same reason that girl that murdered another girl in Italy was not extradited from the US, I think there would be an exception if the victim was American herself.

I understand that but thought there'd be some bylaws when its as cut and dry as the Polanski case seems to be. Living in the US, happened in the US, happened to an American, admitted he'd done it in the US, told to stay in the US

Hadn't he been living in the US for ages as well?

The law is properly fucked up though if there is really nothing France can do to see that justice is done, just because Polanski is a French citizen. Its treading the line between protecting your citizen, and harbouring a criminal imo

People should be ashamed watching his movies. It is literally putting money into his pockets so that he can continue to avoid jail and justice.

Ah yes, the Polanski defence force.

Disappointing list of people in the industry that support scum.

He's an awful excuse for a human being (and if you think that he's only violated those 2 girls, I got a bridge for you to buy), but I have to reluctantly admit that he's also kind of an amazing director.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't shun him as a human being, tho.

Two girls? I thought it was one.

There's an interesting documentary about all this, Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired (2008).
