I listened to those tapes. He was obviously drunk. Not to defend what he said. She was also not his wife. They were never married. They did have a child together.

Hollywood is just that type of town. When you're shunned. You're shunned for good.

Yeah that's true they weren't married, not that it changes the content of those tapes. I don't know how you can come to the conclusion that he is drunk though. There have been a lot of 'Mel Gibson is crazy' stories that floated around Hollywood for years before the arrest audio and then the phone tapes.

If you were publicly attacked and shamed by Hollywood for being raped, you might say something like this too.

Bleh, how scummy.

Wait, you mean after being called a gold digger, hooker, and worse after being raped and no one believing you, you would want it to disappear and not be brought up anymore? That seems pretty weird tbh Wazzy.

There's an interesting documentary about all this, Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired (2008).
Said documentary is cinematic fellatio of an unrepentant child rapist.

"Interesting" is a nice way to describe it.

Polanski is a piece of shit but this would've been resolved decades ago if the judge wasn't spotlight loving a media whore. The woman he raped has wanted this over and done with for a long time now because she's sick of being repeatedly dragged back into it.
"resolved"

Are you shitting me?

Polanski drugged and raped a kid and escaped jail-time to live comfortably in France, and you think an appropriate resolution is to let him go?

...?

How she feels really shouldn't matter. Crimes are committed against the state, not against individuals. Besides the fact that he is now on the hook for rape AND evading justice. He should not be able to avoid it.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.

I think what he's referring to is the fact that the judge wanted to televise the proceedings. One of the things people say (which I find dubious) is that Polanski might not have fled if the judge hadn't pushed to televise the hearings.

It's victim as in singular. And she think's people should just let it go: http://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/sep/18/samantha-geimer-roman-polanski-unlawful-sex-email

Over the decades, she has seen public response to her own story change with the times. "You'll notice the culture has shifted so that everything has swung the other way and now it's Roman the Monster. And then it was my mum and I the monsters." They were called liars and gold-diggers. Gore Vidal called her a hooker. "It was terrible and unwarranted, but not shocking. Well, some of it was shocking." It was also a long time ago. Polanski should be allowed to resolve his legal issues and come back to the US, she says. "Because that's what would be fair. Because it's the right thing." And her? She smiles. "I'm fine."

She's not saying people should let it go. Did you read what you quoted?

"Dubious" is generous.

Do you have any credible source about what happened? I remember watching the documentary years ago and not being able to make up my mind in any way. I think there even was an interview to the victim, but I'm not sure.

Also, how do you know he is 'unrepentant'?

BTW, I'm not questioning the rape, but everything else claimed in the documentary that made him flee the country.

Saying that you know better than the victim is an assholish thing to do, fyi.

Either that or you just called her a liar.
lol okay then.

Yeah but like she forgave him so that doesn't matter!!1111

Polanski pleaded guilty to statuatory rape with a 13 year old, then fled the country to avoid any jail-time.

The evidence shows that he drugged her with champagne and Quaalude, took topless photographs of her, and raped her while she pleaded him to stop. You want evidence? How about the witness's testimony?

Also, how do you know he is 'unrepentant'?
Because he fled the country to escape his sentence and still hasn't turned himself in.

Nothing made Polanski flee the country.

This is why I call the documentary cinematic fellatio; it's focusing on minor judicial misconduct and Polanski's difficult past to show the other side to a child rapist pleading guilty and then fleeing to escape charges for it. It attempts to turn the judge into a pompous, grandstanding villain and not the violent child rapist.

It's always disheartening to be reminded that, unlike movies, people do get away with committing nasty crimes and are even celebrated.

I can separate the artist from the art fortunately, otherwise I couldn't enjoy Burzum. In that case at least the guy went to prison, and he's not exactly celebrated in the metal community, not like Polanski is in Hollywood.

Get a grip, that's not what I said at all. He should've been locked up and never let out while the case was on going and served his time, but the judge allowed it. The resolution would've been him serving his time and he would've been out by now.

Of course it doesn't, I didn't say it did and yet he has due to France and Switzerland's bullshit.

Can we kick Woody Allen out of the country now? And that fuckbag murderer, Broderick, while we're at it?
Woody Allen never had a trial. That is important in a society before you convict someone.
Matthew Broderick had his trial and did the punishment. Even if it is seems laughable compared to what he did.
Also, it is really hard to kick out your own citizens of the country. America's citizens, America's problems.

Polanski should go to prison for the equal amount of years that he has been on the run

I know, instead of addressing Mel's emotional problems and state of his mental sanity. Hollywood fluffy people just through him on the curb like trash.
Has Mel said stupid remarks, fuck yeah. But he is not right in the head and needed help instead of being ostracized

I can't help but to feel sorry for Mel. He's an alcoholic who has fallen off the wagon and people aren't exactly in their right state of mind when that happens. He also never tried to defend himself. He didn't do the press and tv show tours. He instead went and apologized directly to the cop and jewish community and did it secretly, without any publicity.

Not saying the guy doesn't have problems, but he didn't do anything truly terrible. He just talked shit. Meanwhile people who actually did terrible crimes like Polanski or Chris Brown get to enjoy their careers like nothing happened.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
"Best director" means "best example of directing". It is still about the art.

it should be called "Best Direction" then, instead of "Best Director", just like the award for "Best Cinematography"

If Polanski actually faced justice at the time, would he have had the opportunity to direct or create these works?

most of them

even if the answer is "no, he would not have had the opportunity to direct or create a single one," that doesn't mean that it's a good thing that he didn't face justice at the time

Fuckbag murderer? It was an driving accident with zero alcohol usage. Fuckbag murderer is a bit too much no?

I agree, though his actions lead to a mother and a daughter dying. He got off with zero repercussions only because of his status. I thought he'd at least get charged with involuntary manslaughter.

edit: Looks like he did get charged.

That's true but it also doesn't mean the academy should publicly acknowledge it. Rape culture right here in this post folks. Never saw his movie but I'm sure it's well done. Guy is a piece of shit and his work, no matter how "great" it is should not be acknowledged by society.

The academy's job should not be to judge a person's conduct or personality but the actual artistry. That person could be a murderer or the next Gandhi it should not matter. Any award worth its name should never let that come in the way of judging art.

On topic Polanski should never be allowed to enter unless he undergoes his rightful punishment.

She's not saying people should let it go. Did you read what you quoted?

She actually does say that: http://www.npr.org/2013/09/22/224125474/abused-by-both-polanski-and-media-the-girl-moves-on

I didn't want him to go to jail because, to me, it was like, what's that going to solve? He did what he did. Going to jail is not going to take it back, so I don't see the point. I don't think anybody cared what happened to Roman anymore. It was like, just say you did it and can we please walk away from this horrible mess that we don't deserve. We didn't mean to start it and we'd just like out of it now, please.

However, that really doesn't mean Polanski shouldn't face justice. She isn't the judge. One doesn't take the law into one's own hands, whether it is to punish the culprit or to forgive them. It was definitely a rape: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...cuted-me-when-they-tried-to-extradite-me.html

Miss Geimer said of the incident: "It was rape. Not only because I was under age, but also because I did not consent."

I've been looking at references to virtue or behavior in the Academy's statuses or mission statement but all I could find was this (in the official rule book of the Oscars):

87TH ACADEMY AWARDS OF MERIT
RULE ONE
AWARDS DEFINITIONS
1. Academy Awards of Merit shall be given annually to honor outstanding achievements in theatrically
released feature-length motion pictures, and to honor other achievements as provided for in these
rules and approved by the Board of Governors.
2. Awards shall be conferred at an annual Awards ceremony.
3. Awards of Merit in the form of the gold statuette trophy of the Academy (Oscar) shall be conferred annually for the following achievements:

There doesn't seem to be any requirement of honor or good morals in order to win an Oscar.
