Roman Polanski to continue freedom as extradition is rejected again

A reminder of the list of celebrities and directors that signed a petition asking for his release when he was arrested in 2009 and was facing extradition

We have learned the astonishing news of Roman Polanski's arrest by the Swiss police on September 26th, upon arrival in Zurich (Switzerland) while on his way to a film festival where he was due to receive an award for his career in filmmaking.

His arrest follows an American arrest warrant dating from 1978 against the filmmaker, in a case of morals.

Filmmakers in France, in Europe, in the United States and around the world are dismayed by this decision
. It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers, is used by the police to apprehend him.

Roman Polanski is a French citizen, a renown and international artist now facing extradition. This extradition, if it takes place, will be heavy in consequences and will take away his freedom.

Filmmakers, actors, producers and technicians — everyone involved in international filmmaking — want him to know that he has their support and friendship.

And one quote from Chris Rock on the issue when he appeared on Jay Leno's show when this was happening

People are defending Roman Polanski? Because he made some good movies? Are you kidding me? He made good movies thirty years ago! Even Johnnie Cochran didn't have the nerve to go, 'Well, did you see O.J. play against New England?'"

Rape! It's rape! Rape's number 2. Okay? It's murder then rape! It's number 2! Like, the United States wants to capture Osama Bin Laden and then murder him. We're not going to rape him. That would be barbaric.

For a little bit of faith in humanity, here is a list of celebrities who have spoken AGAINST Polanski:

There is a filthy underbelly in Hollywood, their time in the spotlight just hasn't come yet and may never come with such powerful people. There is probably a lot of disgusting people doing bad things and brushing it under the carpet in Hollywood circles. Shameful.

I remember seeing that. I couldn't help but notice that there aren't a lot of big names on that list like there is in the supporter list. It's hard to tell whether it's because they support Polanski or they don't want to come out against him because of how many powerful players are supportive of him.

Really disappointed to see Wes Anderson on that list. Oh well.

And when you said Chris Rock, I was expecting him to disappoint too, but then I read it and I was anything but.

There may not be many huge names but there are more people such as Kevin Smith, Jon Stewart and Neil Gaiman who's personal opinions I listen to and care about than on the supporting list, so that for me means something.

This is only the case because Polanski fled before he was sentenced. This isn't on the media and the courts. Nobody but Polanski is responsible that this has dragged on as long as it has.

in fairness, the judge for this case completely shit the bed, to the extent that i would argue it was perfectly reasonable for polanski to flee

Everybody knows that Hollywood has been fueled by child rape and prostitution since the beginning, but there's too much money going around for anyone to go on the record. If the story ever breaks, Westminster will look like nothing in comparison.

Comedians in particular seemed to have no problem going at him. Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, Howard Stern and Jay Leno were all confused as to why the hell Hollywood was defending this monster.

Oh yeah, anyone in that world definitely deserves a ton of credit for speaking out. It's sad that they'd even need to come out as being against rape. I mean, just think of that.

Someone missing from the supporter list is Johnny Depp's sorry ass

I just don't get the defense for Polanski.

Yeah, he made some legitimately great movies, but that doesn't give him immunity.

If Charles Manson had success with his musical career and still committed his crimes would famous people defend him? Sign petitions?

I love films and everytime I remember that petition I get livid.

Any reason for the decision known?
Couldn't have ended up in any other way. Any merit-based verdict wasn't possible anymore. The supreme court was deciding solely if there were some procedural errors that would require retrial and the previous courts did a lot of due dilligence, so there was nothing there that could justify retrial.

Poland has two levels of court system. You can appeal any case to higher court and it's decision is final when it comes to judgement on facts and guilt. The supreme court (the one who made sentencing today) only handles the so called cassation, which leads to retrial. To have it activated you need to prove there were huge procedural errors during the previous sentencing. If all facts were known and no procedure was broken it's impossible for supreme court to order cassation.

It might have something to do with the fact that while top comedians usually get absorbed into Hollywood at their peak the dues to pay and track to reach it is completely different and while it has its own underbelly usually littered with depression and drugs it's not the same as Hollywoods underbelly, and comedians are also usually a lot more honest about the truth of both themselves and the lifestyle.

Hell in some cases like Maron comedians are more likely to pull the curtain back to far and not shut up about the toll of the life and how horrible they can be as people.

For someone with his past, barely surviving the holocaust, his pregnant mother murdered in Auschwitz and his second wife brutally slaughtered by a satanic cult while being highly pregnant...I think he should be treated incapable of crime anyway.

The thing to remember about that applauding gif is that some are able to separate art and personal life. Some definitely can't and that's perfectly understandable in this situation, but I thought it should be said.

If he would've served his time, he would've been out of jail ages ago and not be a pariah since he served his time.

People who don't want to support, or see support, for a child rapist do not have some inability to compartmentalize.

Absolutely, I agree. I agree with that 100%. It's not at all the same, but the Mel Gibson situation with Hacksaw Ridge brought up the same sorts of questions so I thought it might be worth mentioning.

What?

Having a horrible life isn't a carte blanche to rape a teenager

To be honest, I can actually believe that Brett Ratner didn't put two and two together when that scene was being thrown around. He does strike me as being that damn vapid.

It could go both ways. Either vapid or warped sense of "humor". Brett Ratner has an interesting reputation beyond bad filmmaking.

His horrific past and things he had to endure are the very definition of mitigating circumstances...

Isnt mitigating cicumstances things such as a son killing his father after a decade of abuse?

I had just thought it had to be somehow related to the crime.
