Ronald D Moore Hired As New God of War Showrunner

This is Ron Moore we are talking about, there is ZERO chance this is just gonna be some action adventure show about punching gods and monsters in the face. He's gonna dive DEEP into the pathos of Kratos, surround him with characters that all have their own stories and drama, and whatever god pantheon there is, it will be thoroughly mapped out to make it impactful and thematic, not some Percy Jackson "Gods are just super powered people!" type thing. Exploring the nature of myth, what makes a god and how they interact with mortals, what is destiny and can you change it, all that shit seems right up Moores alley as well as a heavy dose of modern day allegory.

It's entirely possible this show spends a few episodes with just the Spartans and no gods at all, and the reveal that gods actually exist is a key moment deep into the season, much less that they can actually be killed. The quest to kill a specific god could take an entire season or be the ENTIRE show and we never see much more than Ares in just the final moments.

This is now a series I am excited about. One of the best Sci Fi TV writers/showrunners around

That’s some good pedigree right there as both Battlestar and For All Mankind were excellent.

I now wish we got a new SciFi series vs God of War though. Ooh… God of War in Space!

If they can coincide with doing a remaster of the God of War games then they got a great business strategy on their hands. Live action shows/films + remastered games = profit.

They should start with Kratos gazing on a cliff and end it with him doing it again.

Then cut back to someone calling him from behind asking him to help with the burial wood.

That's a great get and gets me more excited for the project.

Even For All Mankind manages to be enjoyable despite how hilariously much it tries to appeal to "modern audiences"

Yeah, I can see it as a mix between the early into stuff they did with 300 and what they did with Spartacus combined with what they were doing with Sandman.

I do think it will be somewhat of an adult themed Percy Jackson though.

It'll be interesting to see what time period they choose for this show to start. Pre God of War, God of War, or God of War 2018.

TV has to have characters that you can relate to. God of War PS1 Kratos isn't going to have a successful tv run in live action. Find me one show that suggests otherwise for those who keep pushing this idea.

One of the biggest challenges with the original saga is having a cast of characters.

Other than Kratos and god characters he wars with, there aren't that many characters of note. You could start before God of War maybe show Kratos first as a kid/young Spartan similar to how they handled Wonder woman and leonidas. Introduce the original atreus. Show him becoming a young spartan captain, but also having his family. I just don't know how long you can do the pre God of war stuff and if you lose the audience once he kills his family, that's a wrap. You'd have to do that as a finale, but that's probably not going to be a great first season.

At best you could do like two episodes of that maybe three.

Good thoughts. That Zack Snyder "Twilight of the Gods" would be a good template as well, with how it depicts gods, as of course is Clash of the Titans. I personally think having gods just be super-men is kinda lame but it is sorta how they are often referenced in myth, both greek and norse, so I guess that a valid choice.

The most successful show in this genre is essentially The Witcher on Netflix. But Geralt and Kratos are very different characters.

But that's a general framework that they can build off of.

I think ultimately, sticking in Greek mythology would be a massive mistake.

That they got a showrunner so quickly says a lot about how important this is to them, but again he wasn't my first choice for this genre. Likely though this is going to be a much deeper show.

Still no clear cut actor to play Kratos either.
