Since Neytiri's banshee died, and they seemed to only connect with one of those birds in their lifetime, does that mean she won't be able to bond with another one?

Presumbably this is just a cultural thing, since there are going to be a limited number of them compared to Navi. Since the
banshees connect for life, it'd be crummy for someone to run around connecting to all of them and spoiling it for everyone else
.

From what I understand, a Na'vi can connect to multiple horses (ok, that sounds kind of wrong :lol ), but they still can only get one Banshee. And as for Toruk, well he's quite a special case anyway.

The way I understood it, is that any Na'vi can connect to a horse interchangeably, but once a Na'vi overpowers and connects to a banshee, that banshee will only ever connect with that particular Na'vi. A Na'vi can have many banshee, but a banshee can only ever have one Na'vi master.

Yes, that's how I understood it.

I'm fairly sure there was a line in the movie that read something like "you only get one chance [to connect to a Banshee]".

I fairly sure it's a one Na'vi, one Banshee thing. Orangey was a special case.

Indeed. Even though they don't say it, it would appear a Na'vi could, if they wanted, to have more than one banshee, but the banshee will only ever have one Na'vi.

it has almost been a week since i saw it, but .. are you sure that wasn't in reference to dying as a result of the banshee overpowering him?

man i need to see it again.. the trailer just isn't cutting it for me anymore

You are correct I believe. He has to 'approach' one, if it sizes his up, it is willing to be his banshee, if he can overpower it and make the connection.

Yeah, you get once chance to bond with each banshee that accepts you.

trying to kill you usualy doesn't mean "accepting you"

the one the tries to kill you is the one that isn't running away, hence only the ones that try to kill you are actualy avalible to be "tame" (since the other are flying away thus kinda hard to catch) the banshee doesn't choose the na'vi it just fucking tries to kill it, when the connection is made the banshee, which was previous hostile, is simply mindfucked into accepting the host

atleast that's how I understood it
the "they try to kill you=they accept you" is just a na'vi social construct trying to explain why some fight back and others don't

2.
All the humans left without an Avatar (such as Norm), how will they live on the planet? I mean, didn't the whole compound get shut down? And in the case that it didn't, where will they pull the energy from to keep it running?
3. Did Jake have any family left after his brother died? I'm assuming this is the case, as it would better explain why he was so quick to consider Pandora as a permanent home (it would also mirror Titanic's Jack, who also didn't have remaining family and was jumping from place to place without putting much thought to it).

1. No, the banshee is the one that won't ever connect and it's dead, so no consequence.
2. They have a limitless supply of masks (to a few people) and undoubtedly tons of other equipment left. Now why they would want to live on the compound is a different story...
3. Not sure, but but the time he stayed there, he was full blown Na'vi so he would be hard pressed to return. His life wasn't that great apparently anyway so maybe his family wasn't that great either.

Man I've actually grown to love the soundtrack. Especially the main theme, used all over the movie but especially in "Become one of the People".

I need to see this movie again.

Yeah, I'm definitely wondering about number one because it was explicitly stated that the Banshee's will only connect with one Na'vi. That was another
sad moment in the film bought to life by Zoe's acting when her Banshee died who she was obviously close to

You guys both have it wrong. Neytiti says that once a bond is made, the ikran will only fly with one hunter for its life. Neytiri can choose a new one.

First Christmas Eve estimates are out

Avatar - 11 million (very impressive, over 10 on christmas eve...)

Alvin 2 - 8 million

Jesus fuck :lol BEAST! Surely that is the largest X-mas eve gross of all time? This movie is going to cross $200M domestic and $600M WW with ease this weekend, and its going to hit $1B WW with ease when its all said and done. Fucking awesome.

And you’d have to be pretty stupid at this point to still say that AVATAR doesn’t have a chance at taking home best picture at the Oscars. Haters/doubters = owned.

It has the technical awards already locked at this point. But best picture? I really don't think it'll get nominated.

10 nominations this year means it will definitely get a nod.

Saw it today... Didn't like it. Story and characters were paper thin and only reason why I didn't walk out the theater was the special effects.

the soundtrack is seriously great, can't believe I took some shit for saying I loved it :lol

oh wait. GAF. I totally can believe it.

I think the thing is, that most people were expecting something along the lines of the TDK OST. Which was just..no words to describe..

Man, just watched the apple.com trailer in 1080p and the movie looks SO MUCH better in 2D. It's so bright, lush, colorful. I am thinking that I want to see the movie in 2D now. The blu-ray release is going to be INCREDIBLE. It may do for blu-ray what The Matrix did for DVD.

I think the main theme is great, but grossly underused in the actual film.

Cause massive systematic failures and send backs? Cool.
The Matrix's DVD had a ton of things that were included in the DVD spec but the majority of players hadn't included those things, so it didn't work, it was maybe the biggest film release fuck up so far.

Yes, it's a shame that a lot of the vibrancy of the colors and sharpness is lost with the 3D crap, but there's just no other way for me watch the movie in theaters. Anything else would be a waste of time.

It apparently packed out the AMPAS screening and, according to blogged reports echoed in the LA Times, there was enthusiastic applause for several names in the credits. The buzz appears to be that it will be nominated, and Best Director doesn't seem far-fetched either.

Well to be nominated it has to be considered to be one of the top 5 best pictures of the year.

Now to be honest, I haven't seen many new releases this year but from what I gathered there's a couple of definite best picture nods. The Hurt Locker is absolutely locked in. Up in the Air is probably another.

So that leaves 3 open slots. I think Up (Pixar) has a good chance at making it. Sugar from earlier in the year might also make it. Inglourious Basterds might sneak in to. And there's also Moon which is arguably a better and more meaningful sci-fi film (certainly reviewed more favorably).

I don't know, just don't see Avatar getting the best picture nod. To be nominated means it has a chance at winning and I really don't see that.

You're counting skills are not fantastic. There are ten Best Picture slots.

There are now 10 nominations and I'm willing to bet almost any amount of money that Avatar will be one of them.

There are ten Best Picture nominations this year. Even if it were still five your analysis is unlikely to match reality: Up, for instance, would have practically no chance under the old 5 nomination rules. Inglourious Basterds, as magnificent as it is, will have an uphill climb in a Hollywood that still takes World War II deadly serious.

I liked Moon, but lol at the academy recognizing that movie. I'll be surprised if it gets nominated for anything.

Truthfully I'll just be glad if clooney's new oscarbait-vehicle wins shit.

So, maybe the Earth governement doesn't allow them to carry design data for non-defensive weaponry? I know machine guns and missiles can technically be used for offense but stuff that is offense only like bombs were restricted. If they had access to bombs, they would have made them before they attacked Hometree. They had months in which they knew war with the Na'vi would be a possibility. Therefore, they had no access to bombs.

Nope, which just means how fucking useless the oscars are. 2001 wasn't even nominated for best picture.
Nor was the Shining. But Barry wins a few? There's some brain dead fucktards on the board. They've made some incredible errors, Kane being the most famous one I guess.

As for Up in the Air, not seen it yet, but I loved Thank You For Smoking, so I want to. I gather you didn't like it?

EDIT: Best Pic for 05, 06 and 07 I all agree with, I guess I have commercial tastes. Crash is among my favorite films. RotK beating Lost in Translation is laughable though.

Oh and just so I'm clear, I think pretty much all of the big award shows in America (especially the Emmys, oh dear lord the Emmys :lol ) don't prove jack shit. Just some fancy words studios can put on their DVD/BD boxes.

Did anyone think the banshees were kinda cute?
They have such a perfect grin.

Lost In Translation is not all right.

I wasn't exactly thinking "DAWWWW" but I could definitely see myself being friends with one.
Would probably have to keep the kitties away from him though.

Sci-fi is mostly pulp. Same with comedy and animation. You can't blame the academy for the stigmas attached to the genres. If a rare movie can break out (Annie Hall, Beauty and the Beast) it can get the nod.

I blame them for nominating and giving the win to movies nobody is gonna give a fuck about a couple of months after the awards ceremony.

You trying to say How Green Was My Valley is less celebrated than Citizen Kane? Thin ice you're on there.
