GREAT interview with Cameron. He talks about WETA's approach, ILM's approach and Zemeckis' approach to mo-cap and this is jus tin the first 10 mins of the video. Still watching.

That was pretty great. This is also, surprisingly, the I think the second or third recent Cameron interview I see where he totally ignores talking about the 3D aspect of the movie. I wonder if he stills feels that strongly about it.

Well he's said many times he will never shoot another film in 2D again, so yeah I think he's pretty adamant.

Well obviously. :P But I remember back before the big Avatar marketing machine started he was all 3D this and 3D that. In an interview posted in the other Avatar thread he mentioned how he shot the movie first and foremost thinking in 2D, framing and compositing for 2D in mind and not 3D. Anyway, I'm also surprised to hear him still talking about Battle Angel. If Avatar is a runaway success I don't think we'll ever see that movie. :P

At James Cameron's tweet: @ebertchicago Right now Armond White is skittishly refreshing Rotten Tomatoes to decide if I'm a visionary or a guilty liberal.

I really hope Armond just fucking rails it to him at this point. That is just gloating.

James Cameron doesn't have a twitter. I hope you realise how silly you now look.

I'm pretty sure that's not actually James Cameron at all. It is a really funny joke account though.

Lay off Ebert. He is a nice man.

And he was right about Gladiator.

Agreed. He has seen probably 300 times the amount of movies anyone on this board has and is probably the most important film critic in the history of cinema.

That isn't James Cameron. :lol

Man, that verified user thing really is necessary.

Realize is with a "z" not a "s." Why is Ebert responding to that twitter account then? Oh well. Whatever.

I think a bigger condemnation of this film would be Armond White giving it a good review.

Obsessing over these scores is super silly.
What other purpose could a thread like this serve but exactly that!? The moment a new review slips in, dozens of GAFers instantaneously spring hard-ons, desperately analyzing it to death in every conceivable, mind-numbing fashion.

That's the spirit!

Who might you recommend in terms of other critics/writers about movies?

Pauline Kael.
Anthony Lane.
Bogdanovich's book of interviews with other film-makers.
Ryan Gilbey.
Peter Biskind.

More, obviously. David Denby, for one: he's not only good on film, but, like Lane, he's waist-deep in literature.

He's obviously not a critic, but I've always really liked it when Tarantino discusses/reviews other films. Shouldn't exactly be a surprise, but the guy has a very sharp mind when it comes to film and it's interesting to hear him analyze works from other directors.

I fucking love listening to Tarantino talk about movies, but he doesn't do that nearly often enough.

Has Phoenix Dark eaten his crow yet?
There is a long list of crow eaters, I think even duckroll & Amirox are in that list.

I'll eat crow if Avatar is lambasted or has worse WoM than TF2. I made a really bold BO prediction for Avatar too, so I'll eat crow there if doesnt make that much. :)

AO Scott is my favorite by far. I started to follow him when he was one of the few people that gave Freddy Got Fingered a good review. He is also one of the few critics that gave CosmicBus' favorite film of the decade Birth a great review. I also really like J. Hoberman of the Village Voice. Well, I pretty much read any review from the Voice or from Salon.com.

Good choice.

What does Amirox need to eat crow for? I only remember him saying the movie doesn't look all that appealing to him, even though he likes Cameron.

Do you have any more links to these Tarantino reviews?
I had no idea he was doing these for Sky.

His Sunshine review is cathartic. That last act pissed me off for ruining such an otherwise fantastic movie.

He was right though.

I just meant how he was acting, not his opinions on the film. No biggie, I'll always love me some Ebert.

Ebert is really gullible? The account is pretty obviously fake. :lol

AO Scott kicks ass. James Berardinelli is pretty good. I like David Edelstein and Dana Stevens too.
Berardinelli has hinted that hes giving the movie 4 stars

To all those who made out their Top 10 lists without seeing "Avatar": shame on you!

Looks like 2009 will conclude with two **** movies. That could change in the next week-plus, but probably won't.

Dead said:

I don't think Berardinelli is the best writer or film analyst in the industry, though he certainly is very far from poor, but I don't think that my opinions gel with any other film critic more than his. I find I'm frequently on the same page as him.

I dont think its hyperbolic to say that Ebert is the biggest/most important film critic in history. Plus hes usually right with his reviews.

Conversely, that cretinous contrarian Armond White is probably the worst.

For any fans of AO Scott..check out At The Movies which used to feature Ebert and that douche Roeper but now has Michael Phillips and AO Scott - both who are very solid critics.

I really like Kermode

But tbh, when I agree with him, I REALLY agree with him, like were on the exact same page, but when I disagree, I REALLY disagree. Its really polar opposites.

But even so Kermode is one of the only few that I still enjoy listening to even if I vehemently disagree with him.

Kermode would probably be significantly less charming without Mayo as a foil. He'd still be awesome, but the partnership is so solid.

I made a thread about At the Movies when they first announced that AO Scott was joining. I like Roeper actually. I think it just took a while for people to come around to him. He is 100 times better than the two fucking Bens though.

I wouldn't say he is always right. But he's one of the few who normally state his opinion well enough that it doesn't sound like a childish rant and that he just did not enjoy the movie as much as others wish he did. Basically, allot of the anti-gaf/internet mentality. He doesn't seem to get drawn into hype like others either.
