Rottenwatch: AVATAR (82%)

Cameron has said he has a story drafted out for two more Avatar movies if this is a hit and if he feels like making one after Battle Angel.

Which I'd actually rather he not do. I'm not a fan of "it was always meant to be a trilogy" type of stories, and I love Cameron's original works. Bring on Battle Angel and whatever comes after it.

We all know Cameron makes the best sequels, but I don't like the idea that he's got two more movies drafted out already. The best sequels are the ones that stand on their own as a movie and that aren't developed as a lead into the third. Not saying that is what he has done, but it becomes pretty likely when you script two at once.

I skimmed Ebert's review, as he usually reveals more than I want to see.

4/4 from that man says a fucking lot considering he hates 3D movies in general.

It takes a hell of a lot of nerve for a man to stand up at the Oscarcast and proclaim himself King of the World. James Cameron just got re-elected.
O:

So, do you guys think this will be any good? Judging from the trailers it looks like a pretty generic snoozefest. I'm surprised about the reviews - are we now praising visual masturbation as the status quo for good movies now?

How about praising a film for being incredibly well executed entertainment on all fronts, which if you actually read a few reviews you'd see that's the general consensus.

Again, what is 2009's standard for good movies exactly?

All the so-called Oscar contenders are getting C+ and B reviews. Some of them aren't even that good.

What's wrong with a good thrill ride?

Seriously, its gonna be pretty terrible. You should probably just avoid it.

Yes it will be good.

Yeah, we've all seen it too so we all know what we are talking about.

Yes it will suck. James Cameron is a hack and we are all sucking at his movie-making-genitals. You are right, and make a stand and show us the light.

Well, I saw the movie and it is nonstop entertainment for 163 minutes, so no.

it's amazing how in the face of SO MANY positive reviews, people are completely intent on hating this film.

this shit is the real deal people! :D

and ewww @ aliens with ads.

Is there any difference at all in size/resolution between the faux IMAX screens and regular theater screens?

First time I saw a movie in Liemax, I noticed a huge difference from a regular screen right away.

It may not be true IMAX, but it still looks really damn good.

He doesn't hate them, he is correct about their imperfections.

I've seen 2 3D movies and they do not have the same visual brightness as 2D. Ebert argues that they sacrifice the picture for the sake of 3D when there was no reason to put 3D in the first place. He is correct.

However, in his review he states that Avatar fixed those 2 problems.

So Imax 3D or RealD? I already got tickets for Imax, but I was curious if anyone has a real comparison. I'll probably go see it a 2nd time in RealD - which will give me an educated opinion of the 2.

I usually respect Ebert's reviews, but ever since I watched Knowing after reading his review I'm not sure anymore. I just feel like we watched different movies.

The same guy directed Dark City, so Ebert has bestowed him with a free lifetime pass.

Wait, so its better to see it in RealD or Imax? There are tickets of each left in the big H so I'm just trying to figure which one.

I'll never comprehend his love of that movie. It's completely baffling to me.

I've said it before but I guess it bears repeating now - only a fool would bet against Cameron.

It's Titantic all over again. Production runs long and overbudget, tons of naysayers and negative press, then the film comes out and rules the world.

Pretty much. Cameron must be laughing his balls off right now.

But Titanic was still completely mediocre...

You are welcome to that view.

I think he was referring to the budget, the delays, the ambition, the pre-review skepticism, and now the and the near-universal praise, Oscar buzz and almost certain box office success ahead of it.

Not your opinion of the Titanic.

Mediocre films don't win 11 Oscars and earn $1.8bn dollars. Only a film with something really special going on can hit that double whammy of insane critical and commercial success, it's not some random accident.

For the record, I think Titanic is a cracking film. Corny? Yes. But keeps the viewer gripped throughout. There's a reason why people went back again and again, it's a masterfully crafted piece of popular entertainment as well as a (at the time) unrivaled spectacle of cinema. I think a lot of the hate for it is just because it's "cool" to dislike something so embraced by the masses.

yea Titanic is a good movie, nothing i rave about but i can respect it. I feel like it's a movie people just enjoy not liking, for whatever reason.

At least Dan has given a reason for disliking Titanic in the past. That's more than most of the people that don't like the movie are willing to offer.

I am so excited for this movie. Opening day, hopefully.

On a somewhat OT note, I checked out a random giant crocodile movie on a whim from Netflix. Sam Worthington is in it, making it the first movie I've seen him in. Strange hearing him in his native Australian accent in a movie after all the Avatar previews in which he masks it.

I think he's about to get eaten. :lol
