Haven't seen this pic before. It is when Jake is waiting to cross the streeting amongst the bustling pedestrians on future Earth.

What's up with the pedestrians in the background? Wearing mouth caps or are they genetically altered furry-faces? :lol

They should be masks to cover their mouths...

...but that one on the side DOES look like a cat face :lol

Yeah its been said that the air on future-earth is so pollution filled that a lot of the public walk around with rebreather masks.
That Earth sequence would have made for some interesting contrasts and parallels to Pandora; the urban nightmare vs. dense jungle; the way Cameron used the blue neon lights to make the city look like Pandora at night; the need for masks both on Earth and Pandora. It sounds like only a few minutes of stuff was cut. Really is a shame it wasn't left in. Between that stuff and the shot of Jake struggling with his legs in his apartment, I think it would have really added a lot to the film.

Like everything else that was cut. :\

Box office fun fact: The Dark Knight made $14.7m in its entirety of week #6 (Fri-Thurs). A number Avatar will more than double this weekend alone, and likely triple in the full week.

Yeah, the scenes on earth are probably no more than 2-3 minutes. Its only about 2 pages of the script missing from the movie

Yeah, he makes it clear (in the scriptment) that the masks have become so common that they are also fashion pieces for many.

Hey Sculli, where is the full video of that roundtable?

Are they piece-mealing it out?

Nice find on the picture of Earth...again.

I really hope we get a bunch of stuff from the script put back in one day. I know the first release will probably not have a lot put in since they can re-release it for Christmas with even more added in a "true" special edition. I hope Cameron can work his magic and make it just one bad ass single release, but I doubt it.

The theatrical cut is the director's cut though. So while I'm intrigued at how the DVD/BluRay cut will be I think the theatrical will be better and more tighter overall.

Also if you read the old script he definitely took some liberties from the 90s til now to get this more accessible as possible. I hope he goes straight R for Battle Angel and goes all out. God knows he has all the money he needs to do WHATEVER he wants.

Long live the king :lol

Cameron addressed the whole Zemeckis thing in the Entertainment Magazine.

So what did Cameron say? It's surreal how far Cameron leapfrogs Zemeckis in this mo-cap tech business.

Here it is word for word.

Okay, I want to comment on that, because I don't feel any competitiveness with Bob Z. We're friends and certainly we're respectful colleagues. Bob pioneered this process. My first [assistant direct] worked with Bob on Beowulf and Polar Express, and we just literally took a lot of what they did just as a basic day-to-day operations. Bob essentially is making animated films using an actor-driven process. His visual choice on Beowulf didn't require photo-realism. Avatar is a different kettle of fish. We were intercutting live-action footage with CG footage, so our CG had to be interchangeable with photography.

Well that was a pretty safe comment (rightly so).

We wouldn't really want Cameron saying something like:

Look, Bob's mo-cap films are just an absolute joke. The man should stop being delusional and come to WETA for some help. Avatar second biggest movie ever, I'm king of the univeeeeeeerse

:lol

I don't think Avatar will age as well as Star Wars mostly because it doesn't have as many memorable lines or lovable characters. There's no Han Solo, not even a Chewbacca. Most of the supporting cast hardly gets any time to shine. Quarritch is certainly no Darth Vader.....he's just your douchebag gym teacher with more guns.

Plus the environmentalist themes (which apparently only gets more brow-beating in the Director's Cut) will feel more tiresome and dated as time goes on. Star Wars was more pure escapism -- they made it in 1977 but it isn't constantly whining about stagflation and the oil crisis.

The thing that bothers me about Zameckis' films isn't so much the uncanny valley issues but his tendency to use only one or two voice actors for entire films. I have no interest in hearing Tom Hanks do lame voices for 2 hours.

Possibly...or maybe we will actually become more environmental friendly and it will make more sense. I'm not saying this film will change the way we act, but I'll be honest with you that I didn't recycle much at all or pay attention to that stuff, but I've changed my ways quite a bit recently. I won't say it's all this movies doing, but it certainly opened my eyes to what I was doing wrong.

Environmentalism is a sort-of fad that seems to come and go every 10-15 years. It's not exactly a huge coincidence that Ferngully came out about 17 years ago. While Avatar is nowhere near as bad, I think its preachy, alarmist notions will seem every bit as corny as Ferngully's given as much time.

As far as I know, recycling anything but aluminum is a waste that uses more resources than it would to simply produce new materials.

Environmentalism is more than a fad currently... what the fuck are you smoking? :lol

I find this bs hard to believe. BELIEVE!

Environmentalism as manifest in the popular culture is very much a fad or cycle that comes and goes. I remember a time when Earth Day was a big deal and everyone knew when it was coming and was doing stuff to celebrate. Now it's just some weird holiday thing that pops up. Now somebody will say "Oh, it's Earth Day" and everybody just shrugs and goes about their business.

So the millions of dollars going into "green" energy is just going to disappear shortly? I think we are the verge of serious change in terms of how we look at the environment... if it wasn't for the shit economy, we would probably be a lot further a long then we are now.

Maybe you could make a case for recycling plastic since it's petroleum-based and we are running out of oil slowly. But then how much oil do we waste everyday driving around gigantic trucks to collect everyone's garbage? How much energy do we waste melting down everyone's garbage? Then shipping the melted down garbage to another plastic factory?

That's less popular culture and more environmentalism as manifest in government policy or commercial practice. Since the founding of the EPA there's always been some significant investment of time and effort into reducing pollution and regulation, but the interest of everyday people has high and low tides generally related to how much they are scared of whatever people claim as the worst case scenario. Some so-called green technologies are scams just to let people feel better about themselves, and I suspect those will disappear once the market for smugness dries up.

Even with the current day interest in "green" technology, it doesn't make Ferngully any less hokey and dated. It's called "The Last Rainforest" and yet here we are 18 years later with rainforests still intact.

Am i the only one who loved Beowulf? Saw that in 3D and it's what sold me on it.

I didn't consider Avatar Use of 3D any better.

Nah I like Beowulf too.

But Avatar is 10 times better than that.

Well in the EW article he mentions how there is a lot more of Grace/Jake scenes and a lot with the NA'Vi. So I think we'll get both.

edit: She is gorgeous.

Cameron also said that he pared the rest of the movie down much more than the Jake/Neytiri relationship, partly because Zoe's performance was so good he couldn't cut any of it. So the rest of the characters got hit a lot harder by editing that she did.

Ya I remember something about that. I can live with that since Zoe's performance was so strong.

I wonder if they shot any of the part they mention in Cinefex with them flying together with their eyes locked together...the first time you know they have fallen for each other. Sounds like it's something they probably did not do, but by the description they filmed some of it for sure.

Thank you Cameron. You've provided George Lucas a reason to re-release the original Star Wars trilogy....again.

Star Wars 3D
”[I’m] happy it’s so successful, and worked very well in 3-D,” he continued. “Haven’t been a big fan of 3-D, but that movie definitely improves in (the field of) 3-D.”

George was so impressed with the movie’s technology – which took home the trophy for Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 2010 Globes – that he thinks it could help pave the way for creating 3-D versions of his “Star Wars” movies.

“We’ve been looking for years and years and years of trying to take ‘Star Wars’ and put it in 3-D,” George explained to Access. “But, [the] technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.”
