Ya I'm done predicting other than this...it will NOT beat Titanics weekend record this weekend (29 million if I remember right) however it will beat its 10th weekend record (21 million). So it may skip a weekend, but it will pick up the one right after which will look weird on the record list :lol
I think it could beat Titanic's record for this coming weekend, with the help of the Best Picture nomination bump.

Avatar Oscar nominations, from the other thread:

Best Picture
Best Director
Art Direction
Cinematography
Film Editing
Music (Original Score)
Sound Editing
Sound Mixing
Visual Effects

Wonder why Sculli got banned. How's that thread going, Gui_PT?
I think it will win:

picture
cinematography
editing
sound editing
sound mixing
visual effects

director will goto bigelow. Well have split director/picture this year.

MIGHT win art but probably not.

Ya I got my weekends wrong. It will get this weekend but not next. It could get the weekend after possibly but there is a lot competition coming up.

IMO it will win these:
Art Direction
Cinematography
Film Editing
Visual Effects
And perhaps these, I don't really know much about these categories and how is Avatar in them in comparison to others
Sound Mixing
Sound Mixing
Maybe Director, but IMO picture is going to Hurt Locker.
Though i'm secretly hoping that with new voting system IB will be everyone's second-third choice and it will win:D

Remember when people spoke of the REAL Avatar?
Remember when Cameron rambled for an hour about Pandora that Ubisoft presentation and pretty much everyone (myself included) concluded that Cameron had lost it and was turning into George Lucas without Star Wars? Good times.

Good old times :lol
remember when people actualy used to discuss the movie instead of 100 of pages of how much money it makes as if they are shareholders for Fox?

That was pretty funny, but he got the last laugh, by a billion dollars or so.

The REAL Avatar folks are still available to be laughed at, though.

AVATAR Update: $2,700,621 on Monday. Domestic total is now $598,453,037. With all the Oscar nominee gold, by the end of today, we will most likely have a new domestic champion!! KING OF THE WORLD...AND NORTH AMERICA!!!
:D

That was honestly the first time I began to know anything about the movie. I think I maybe had heard the name or codename in the past but knew nothing more than that.

And yeah, his "fireside chat" did leave me kinda going WTF. :lol

But in the end, what can I say, he was just getting warmed up. :D

And Sound of Music has a pretty good excuse for not getting a screenplay nomination, whereas Avatar does not.

I just realized the other day that Sound of Music's adjusted box office gross is something like 1 billion dollars -- totally insane.

Down 16.7% from last week. The trend is just downright eerie in how consistent it is.

I'm not expecting much of an Oscar bump, but we'll find out soon enough.

I'm expecting a small bump. If it makes more than $29 Million this weekend could we consider than an Oscar bump?

I think we should. It's also the only way it'll beat Titanic the weekend after. Unless it steadies at $30 million for a few weeks regardless of awards lol.

Btw, how many % was it down this weekend compared to the weekend before, in worldwide terms? I think I only read about the american drop and the wordwide weekly drop.

Cameron would "happily lose" to Bigelow:

"I always believe it's very unlikely that lightening will strike twice. I believe it's very unlikely that we will win because I made such a jackass out of myself last time. Although there might be some curiosity about what I might do. The Hurt Locker is a very, very strong picture. Of the contenders, it's definitely the strongest. Certainly it's Kathryn's moment. I would happily lose to her. I've already got one of those damn statues. I'd be pissed off if somebody else won, but I wouldn't mind if she won."

How can Cameron NOT win best director?

That would be beyond retarded. What other director didn't have the tech to make his movie.. so he made the tech!

Easy for him to say when he knows he and Bigelow are realistically the only real possible winners.

I said it in the other thread.

I fully expect AHBUHDAR to lose not only Director but Picture as well. It will win the technical awards but that's it.

The Academy voters are NOT the Hollywood Foreign Press.

There are a lot of politics at play and Cameron is very polarizing.

His winning @ the GGs made a lot of voters angry and those will vote against him.

You heard it here first.

Avatar sucked. It shouldn't win shit besides for its technical merits. Horrible story, cringe worthy dialogue, and way too long. No matter how long, or bad a movie is, I try to watch the whole thing. Think I got up at least twice during Avatar to piss, and then another time to take a call. Who cares if it looked good.

Holy Contradiction, Batman!

Ya think?

Maybe he actually would be happy for her. It's not as if they weren't married, worked together for years after separating and are still close friends or anything.

Yup. Bigelow/Hurt Locker swept the guild awards. I think it has a slightly better shot at Best Picture than director (no shot, sadly). But I think Hurt Locker will take it.

Uh, not really. Giving it awards for visuals/sound/whatever changes nothing. Yeah, it the movie was visually pleasing. That doesn't change the fact that it blows ballsack. I still don't care.
I must be weird. When I don't care about a subject, I don't post in a thread about it (which is why I don't post in most threads).

Yes, it IS a contradiction.

If it blew, and "who cares if it looked good" you should wish for it to get shutout completely and not win a thing.

NOTHING.

If you hated it so much, why would you be ok with it winning ANYTHING that would validate it's "blowing of the ballsack", regardless of whether it's for "visuals/sound/whatever " ?

That's a CONTRADICTION, son.

I wasted a few hours of my life watching it. At least I can now talk about how horrible it was. And that has only taken about 5 minutes of my time and has been infinitely more enjoyable than watching the movie was.

Btw, only reason I entered the thread was the "83%" in the thread title. At first I laughed and thought the OP was fucking with me. Now I'm slightly saddened by people's tastes in movies. Star Wars prequels, Transformers, Avatar... ugh.

A movie isn't just visuals. A movie isn't just dialogue or story. I'm okay with it winning awards for its technical merits. I'm not okay with people thinking it was a good movie. It was still a waste of time no matter how great it may have looked. Good looks lose their appeal within the first few minutes of the movie, and in Avatar's case all you had left was a bunch of shit.

So you're probably also sad at the whole making two billion dollars at the box office thing, I imagine.

Anyway, you're of course entitled to your opinion. I just get a kick out of people who on one hand come into threads and post, while simultaneously professing that they don't care about the topic at hand. That's really quite a contradiction.

I totally remember all those movies scoring the same on Rottentomatoes and Metacritic and having the exact same WOM.

Son, your trollin' tactics are awesome.

Keep it up.

Avatar may not be the best movie of 2009 but it sure as hell is better than either Transformers or any of the Star Wars prequels. The plot may have covered familiar ground, but at least it did something completely new in the process and had a coherent script, which would already pretty much disqualify the movies you're comparing it to.

And how exactly does any of this address my post that you were "responding" to?

I can see why Cameron is freely saying he feels someone else should win. I mean he was so lavished with success and awards and praise with Titanic, for him it might have just been the highest point he will ever reach and he knows it. All this additional greatness is just a bonus now. Very few directors get to be involved with something like Titanic.

Anyway, I just thought the movie was horrible and was amazed by the reviews it is getting. Not trying to troll. I'm going to leave you guys alone now and go play some games!

That's cool.

Just remember that if you respond to anything in this thread from this point on, you will no longer be "leaving us alone" or "playing some games" during the time you spend writing your response.

That sonny boy, would be a

Contradiction

Agreed that Avatar should only get the technical awards. It certainly doesn't deserve a best picture nomination but I guess the Academy felt they couldn't ignore those box office numbers and truly groundbreaking special effects work. Hurt Locker was definitely a good movie but its a shame that a remarkable work like Basterds will be ignored because of the effects showcase that is Avatar and the perfectly servicible Locker. Neither movie has a scene that comes close to touching that of the opening scene of Basterds.
