Something that's been bugging me for a while. Jake's avatar, looks eerily a lot like the dude from twilight:

Just jumped on the hype train, I'll see it on Wednesday if I'm lucky. I'd like to know if I should expect to be surprised by the story, or stay with what I know from the trailers ?
How can you expect to be surprised? A surprise is something you didn't expect.

I mentioned this system on the thread a couple of days ago. I saw Up on a cinema fitted with the Xpand system, and while the 3D effect was pretty cool, it has a really serious drawback: the glasses are heavy as fuck. My girlfriend and me both wear glasses, and our noses were hurt at the end of Up, so imagine what kind of pain you must sustain over a 2 and a half hours plus movie. That system is dead, trust me.

Damn it, it's the only 3D system available here. :lol

Oh, well, I hope the film is gonna be worth enduring the pain. :lol

I really hope you don't wear glasses XD. Or take some cotton to erase the pain in the nose. Btw, bring some cleanning tissues with you, your Xpand glasses "may" be dirty (they have a system to clean them, but you never know XD).

I don't, I have eye lenses, but thanks for the heads up and the cleaning tips. :lol

Heh. Wasn't expecting any kind of awards before it came out. :lol

This happens all the time at the end of the year. All the films are screened to critics/academy voters early in order to have these awards earlier. Oscars is the only award ceremony that is really late.

my dad just got IMAX tickets for Saturday morning! Can't wait. Going with my entire family and gf. Should be fun.

I guess I never mentioned this when I saw it, but my girlfriend and other friend absolutely loved it as well.

Good to hear.

I remember you mentioning the story was a bit weak and the characters cliche and corny. Is it distracting or anything? For comparison's sake, let's say compared with characters and dialogue from Terminator 2 and Titanic.

It just seems to be a widely criticised aspect of the film.

What's the deal with subtitles on 3D movies? Where are they 'placed' in relation to the screen depth? I can imagine it looking odd.

Not sure about localization subtitles, but I've heard that the way Cameron has handled the Na'Vi subtitles is very cool. I think I remember reading they like float in front of and behind set pieces in the foreground.

In the 3D preview the subtitles were constantly moving between the different depth layers. It was kind of neat, but distracting. I did my best to try to avoid them. :P

It definitely hurts the film, but before you have time to shrug Cameron moves on to another spectacle.

They kind of float out from the screen and there were a few occasions where they are placed in between characters. Once that comes to mind is where Neytiri (right frame) is the closest to us. In the middle are the subtitles, then in the background is her clan (left frame). It's cool, not very distracting.

re: 3d glasses over spectacles with corrective lenses - thoughts, experiences, etc?

With Dolby3D: DEAR GOD NO PLEASE MAKE IT STOP

With RealD: No real issues to be honest, relatively comfortable.

I wonder will Fox going to put 100% 3D subtitle in this movie?

Disney made one for A Christmas Carol, It is worked well - subtitle is front of all.

Just to confuse matters, Dolby 3D was chosen for the London Premier.
And the Comic-Con first ever showing. However considering it doesn't require new screens, or expensive glasses, it's the perfect one to slip in to a random cinema.

Yeah RealD is the good one.

Where I live Avatar is getting subtitled and dubbed 3D showings. A Christmas Carol was only dubbed, though.

Someone explain me why it is better. If it makes you sick, its too bad, but not really a reason to tell everybody else to avoid it.

There were many interlacing and ghosting issues at the Dolby3D showing i weant to. Issues that were largely gone at RealD(then again i'm comparing different movies). RealD projection looked a lot crisper to me too. It's the best image quality I've ever seen in anything.

But the main advantage of RealD are the glasses. They're slim and comfortable. Dolby3D's are bulky and uncomfortable, ESPECIALLY if you already wear prescription glasses.

Look, if Dolby3D doesn't give you a headache like me, it's a moderately competent 3D service, but personally I doubt I will step into one of those screens ever again.

Avatar just won film of the year at the NY Film Critics Online awards.
Armond White is part of the panel that votes on this

I wonder if Armond will surprise troll everyone by giving a positive review

I just got my ticket for this friday: seeing it in IMAX 3D.

My first IMAX movie. My first 3D movie. I've never been so hyped :D .

The first ever showing was actually at Cine-Expo in a custom theatre, and it used RealD.
Dolby 3D does require expensive glasses, but it does not require a new screen, which is why Comic-Con chose to use Dolby for 3D projection.
To complicate matters, the premiere used a custom four projector (!!!) Dolby 3D system that was chosen by Fox.

I hated the '3D subs' in the preview, so distracting.

I can't even imagine having to read subs in 3D when the entire thing is subbed. Sounds headache-inducing, especially for a 2:40 hour movie.

Having to choose between that and dubbing must be awful. Sorry jett.

lulz I've watched subbed movies all my life, I'll have no problem with it. :P
