solar panels eh.

I wonder if there is room for a pool, since Cameron wanted to try motion capture underwater

Starring in an Avatar sequel must be the least interesting thing in the world. At least the first movie had the unique experience of trying on new tech. From what I've read, they spend all day inside a large empty warehouse.

It's a testament to Cameron's vision that he can create a planet that feels alive and genuinely alien inside a grey empty building. But we all know Al Pacino did it first anyway.

The pay is probably ok. But actors like to try innovative things in their industry.

Watching all the motion capture footage on the Extended Blu-Ray actually paints the experience as one where the actors had a lot of fun actually, never mind that there was also a realy live action shoot in addition.

There's a great deleted scene of a sort of festival where are all the characters get drunk and dance and whatnot, and watching the motion capture footage, you'd think it was a real party.

Cameron talks a bit about working on the sequels.

“We’re shooting two films back-to-back, so I’m writing two scripts, not one, which will complete a free-film story arc – not really a trilogy, but just an overall character arc so I’m pretty excited about that,” Cameron told FOX411’s Pop Tarts ahead of he and his wife Suzy Amis being honored for their philanthropic work in helping homeless youth at the recent Covenant House Gala in Los Angeles. “We’re doing a lot of preliminary work right now on new software and new animation techniques and so on. We’re creating a new facility in Manhattan Beach so everybody that’s not already dead is coming back.”

"There's always an expectation. I had to deal with that after 'The Terminator' back in 1984. All of a sudden I had a big hit movie and it was 'what are you doing next?' But my job is take the audience on a journey and entertain them," he said. "The second I am sitting down writing, I just go to Pandora. I don't think about that stuff, about standing on a red carpet. It has its own life, really. The characters have their own lives."

They really do want to turn this into the next Star Wars brand.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kathy-franklin-head-avatar-brand-220967
Tapped to build the Avatar brand, Kathy Franklin has been named president of franchise development at James Cameron and Jon Landau's Lighstorm Entertainment.

The hire signifies Lightstorm's commitment, in collaboration with 20th Century Fox, to grow the Avatar name beyond the traditional licensing and merchandising avenues.

“Anticipating the exponential growth of the Avatar universe, we looked for someone who could lead a team that will cement Avatar as a world class brand across all platforms and markets. Kathy’s experience, coupled with her drive and vision for what Avatar can be, made her the right choice," Cameron said.

Avatar 2 is set to hit theaters in 2014, followed in 2015 by Avatar 3.

Franklin is a seasoned executive with a proven record of designing and implementing branding strategies. As vice president of global studio franchise development for Disney Consumer Products, she worked on the Disney Princess, Disney Fairies, Cars and Toy Story franchises.

How long is Cameron going to remain committed to the franchise? I figure he'll be bored by the next one and hand it off which will mark its decline.

Well if he keeps releasing a movie every 10 years he'll be dead or retired before he gets that far.

There's only one thing he needs to do to establish the longevity of the brand. Make the 2nd movie better in every respect, which I think he'll have no problem doing.

Hes pretty much been sticking to a schedule that he set many years ago. Avatar 1, then Avatar 2/3 back to back and then hopefully Battle Angel.

His plans havent changed since 2006

btw, Sculli, have you seen this:

Cameron is most likely being really careful with what to do next and definitely has some ambitious stuff planned.

The movie is pretty much in a once in a lifetime position. Avatar is far and away the most widely viewed movie accross the planet in the past 25 years that not only has a future beyond one film (Titanic obviously was a one and done :P) but was actually planned to be the start of a whole new universe. No one has ever had the chance to grow a film with such MASSIVE awareness and success into a full fledged franchise. Its pretty much uncharted territory.

The closest anything else has ever come was Jurassic Park, but it never had the outward growth possibilities that Camerons movie has, and even if it had, the franchise basically fumbled and dropped the ball with the sequels.

How much money are we looking at for that Sully figure? 150 bucks? 250? I've never had the urge to buy an articulated doll before but the detail on that thing is fucking nuts. Might have to just get him and the shotgun toting T-800 to put on my desk, then bail out forever.

$300 lol

He's 1/6th scale, meaning 1 foot and a half.

Fucker's huge.

Also includes a light up base

Hot Toys shit is really expensive, but the size, requirement of brand new exclusive body sculpt and mold and fine detail on the head really jack up the price.

Btw Ill be having a 3D Plasma within the next 2 weeks and will also hopefully be procuring myself a copy of the Avatar 3D blu.

Gonna be so cash. Seen it before, and it looks incredible on the Panny plasma + active 3D, even better than in the theaters

Between that and the commercial release of 3D HTTYD this fall, ill be in 3DTV heaven

More than ever I want the second film to follow a sort of reverse Apocalypse Now storyline, with some green beret vet having his own Avatar grown on the trip out, cutting off his own finger to blend in and slowly infiltrating his way through the Na'vi community in order to get close enough to terminate Jake.

It's fucking awesome that since these figures are all 1/6 scale, that just means that the Jake one is HUGE compared to the other properties. They didn't just make him 1/10 instead too keep it roughly the same size as the other licences.

As hardcore and amazing as that would be, I have the feeling that the sequels are going to be adventure movies with Jake and Neytiri practically holding hands the entire time. I really hope Cameron has the balls to do a asymmetric take on the plot, like what you describe. Actually, I just want the first movie to be pretty much what you laid out. Jake would be placed in Eytukan's role of having to question the new guy's motivations, but what would twist the knife is that this guy has everything Jake had in Avatar 1 (orders to undermine the Na'Vi), except he lacks Jake's good nature, and never for a moment changes his mind about their culture. More of a two-faced sociopath on a suicide mission, playing soccer with blue 10 year olds one minute, and cutting into his hand "Agent Smith-in-Bane" style the next. Probably sent by RDA suits ten steps past Selfridge's paygrade to take out "The Cripple".

Ahh, the possibilities.

Yeah, I will admit that I'll be disappointed if Cameron doesn't go a little bit darker in tone now that he already has the audience hooked in. I don't think he has the mean streak in him anymore, unfortunately.

All I know is that Cameron will make me go *unf* *unf* with whatever sci-fi movie he makes next.

Avatar 2 might be Jake+Neytiri exploring their world until Zombie-Quaritch shows up and starts to hunt them. Mixture of adventure and survival horror movie. Last shot of the movie is human battleships raining down nuclear fire on Pandora.

Avatar 3 is all out human on Na´vi action, the twist is that Eywa dies and the victorius Na´vi have to jump planet with the help of humans, who in turn can now harvest Unobtanium all they want (in lead suits ;) ).

Or something. Just release it soon.

So, my backlog is finally whittled down to 2 Blurays, one of which is this. The day of reckoning (watching) is coming! Can't believe its now been 20 months since I last saw it, in theatres no less.

I still don't expect you to watch it till just before Avatar 2 releases.

Worthington apparently has been briefed on the story for the sequels.

“Jim’s the person who will tell me when to show up,” he laughed. “I’ve talked to him, he’s told me what his plans for the story are, and it’s huge. It’s just monumental. But he’s not going to start until he raises the bar for himself, and he’s in no rush.”

“But the story arc is huge; I needed a break halfway through because I was exhausted. It was insane, but it’s amazing. It’s going to be amazing.”

And apparently, a lot of the time writing the sequels had been dedicated to Cameron nutting out the bible beforehand. Spending a ridiculous amount of time getting the details right.

Hype.

Wouldn't expect anything less.

Hope it gets intergalactic up in that bitch. You know JC will find a way.

Interstellar, you mean. :D

Also, this news might also be nothing but a situation like this:

Cameron: So, it starts out in space.
Sam: 'Whoa, whoa. Slow down, egghead.'

Topping the first one is very easy, the bar is too low. It's no Terminator.

Make part 2 rated R and I'll be hyped.

Am hyped no matter the rating, but I do hope the 2nd is less family friendly with cardboard cut out messages and characters. Terminator 2 this shit and make it real (as possible within the setting obviously).

There is no chance the films will ever be R. But hopefully he can push the shit to the extreme. Seriously, there were so many s-bombs in the original.

I dont think Cameron is unable to make a darker movie, a lot of the stuff he shot for Avatar made the movie a lot more unasanitized (Psychadelc drug experiences, more violent retributions from the Navi, Quaritch originally being even more of an underhanded and violent piece of shit)

But when you have a movie that most likely cost north of 400 million dollars (I dont believe the official number for a second) then you obviously have to make concessions

I think what I would just love to see a return to most of all in these films, is Cameron somehow pulling out that part of him that channels that feeling of absolute dread in the audience.

That light-stomach, how the fuck are we going to make it feeling that ran all throughout T1, Aliens, T2 and even second half of Titanic.

Things have to go absolutely tits up in a dark, dark way in this film.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the budget gets to be 450 million.
I meant 400+ for part 1

Im guessing the budget for 2 and 3 together will be something like 600+ Million

Hm, I might have to finally watch this. Since sequels are happening I really need to probably do it. I got stoned before I watched the first movie (big mistake) so I passed out due to boredom. Not that it was that boring, but I was too high to stay awake in a comfortable seat in the dark without some mega excitement. Spent all that money to see my first and only 3D movie and I didn't even see it :(

If you ever do, make sure its the Extended Cut.

Out of all of Camerons movies, Avatar benefits the most from the extended version (after the Abyss)

Man, how does Cameron stay sane? He's in charge of so many factors of production, people on set, and so much money. I'd like to be a filmmaker but I mean the thought of having even 1 million$ for me to do what I want with is incredible. 400 mil is like... wut.

I will probably do that one of these evenings. How long did the extended cut end up being?

And make sure you do it in the best theater system you can afford.

Got rid of my surround sound about a year ago after the receiver broke because it's really not conducive to the shape of my living room. I will deal, though.

Keep in mind he worked on the movie for like 5 years straight too

Just about 3 hours

Theres also like 45 minutes of additional unfinished scenes, including one that is nearly 10 minutes long that should have never been cut (the psychadelic experience scene)

3 minutes shy of 3 hours I believe.

There probably wont be any "real" news until like 2013

Not to mention that due to how the films are made there wont be any leaks or shit like that
