Salvor.Hardin said:Starring in an Avatar sequel must be the least interesting thing in the world. At least the first movie had the unique experience of trying on new tech. From what I've read, they spend all day inside a large empty warehouse.
It's a testament to Cameron's vision that he can create a planet that feels alive and genuinely alien inside a grey empty building. But we all know Al Pacino did it first anyway.
"I'm doing a second and third film. We're at the writing stage right now, early design, doing software development and so on. Battle Angel is right now on hold until those films are done."
Were shooting two films back-to-back, so Im writing two scripts, not one, which will complete a free-film story arc not really a trilogy, but just an overall character arc so Im pretty excited about that, Cameron told FOX411s Pop Tarts ahead of he and his wife Suzy Amis being honored for their philanthropic work in helping homeless youth at the recent Covenant House Gala in Los Angeles. Were doing a lot of preliminary work right now on new software and new animation techniques and so on. Were creating a new facility in Manhattan Beach so everybody thats not already dead is coming back.
"There's always an expectation. I had to deal with that after 'The Terminator' back in 1984. All of a sudden I had a big hit movie and it was 'what are you doing next?' But my job is take the audience on a journey and entertain them," he said. "The second I am sitting down writing, I just go to Pandora. I don't think about that stuff, about standing on a red carpet. It has its own life, really. The characters have their own lives."
Tapped to build the Avatar brand, Kathy Franklin has been named president of franchise development at James Cameron and Jon Landau's Lighstorm Entertainment.
The hire signifies Lightstorm's commitment, in collaboration with 20th Century Fox, to grow the Avatar name beyond the traditional licensing and merchandising avenues.
Anticipating the exponential growth of the Avatar universe, we looked for someone who could lead a team that will cement Avatar as a world class brand across all platforms and markets. Kathys experience, coupled with her drive and vision for what Avatar can be, made her the right choice," Cameron said.
Avatar 2 is set to hit theaters in 2014, followed in 2015 by Avatar 3.
Franklin is a seasoned executive with a proven record of designing and implementing branding strategies. As vice president of global studio franchise development for Disney Consumer Products, she worked on the Disney Princess, Disney Fairies, Cars and Toy Story franchises.
Hes pretty much been sticking to a schedule that he set many years ago. Avatar 1, then Avatar 2/3 back to back and then hopefully Battle Angel.Teh Hamburglar said:How long is Cameron going to remain committed to the franchise? I figure he'll be bored by the next one and hand it off which will mark its decline.
Well if he keeps releasing a movie every 10 years he'll be dead or retired before he gets that far.
Nothing does to be fairTacticalFox88 said:Avatar doesn't have the cultural impact to be a Star Wars Brand. I'm not sure why they're wasting time

$300 lolomnomis said:How much money are we looking at for that Sully figure? 150 bucks? 250? I've never had the urge to buy an articulated doll before but the detail on that thing is fucking nuts. Might have to just get him and the shotgun toting T-800 to put on my desk, then bail out forever.

He's 1/6th scale, meaning 1 foot and a half.
Scullibundo said:More than ever I want the second film to follow a sort of reverse Apocalypse Now storyline, with some green beret vet having his own Avatar grown on the trip out, cutting off his own finger to blend in and slowly infiltrating his way through the Na'vi community in order to get close enough to terminate Jake.
Solo said:So, my backlog is finally whittled down to 2 Blurays, one of which is this. The day of reckoning (watching) is coming! Can't believe its now been 20 months since I last saw it, in theatres no less.
Jims the person who will tell me when to show up, he laughed. Ive talked to him, hes told me what his plans for the story are, and its huge. Its just monumental. But hes not going to start until he raises the bar for himself, and hes in no rush.
But the story arc is huge; I needed a break halfway through because I was exhausted. It was insane, but its amazing. Its going to be amazing.
Wouldn't expect anything less.Scullibundo said:Worthington apparently has been briefed on the story for the sequels.

And apparently, a lot of the time writing the sequels had been dedicated to Cameron nutting out the bible beforehand. Spending a ridiculous amount of time getting the details right.
Hype.

Hope it gets intergalactic up in that bitch. You know JC will find a way.
Topping the first one is very easy, the bar is too low. It's no Terminator.Dead said:There's only one thing he needs to do to establish the longevity of the brand. Make the 2nd movie better in every respect, which I think he'll have no problem doing.
I meant 400+ for part 1TacticalFox88 said:Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the budget gets to be 450 million.
If you ever do, make sure its the Extended Cut.Sklorenz said:Hm, I might have to finally watch this. Since sequels are happening I really need to probably do it. I got stoned before I watched the first movie (big mistake) so I passed out due to boredom. Not that it was that boring, but I was too high to stay awake in a comfortable seat in the dark without some mega excitement. Spent all that money to see my first and only 3D movie and I didn't even see it![]()
I really hope so too.Scullibundo said:I think what I would just love to see a return to most of all in these films, is Cameron somehow pulling out that part of him that channels that feeling of absolute dread in the audience.
That light-stomach, how the fuck are we going to make it feeling that ran all throughout T1, Aliens, T2 and even second half of Titanic.
Things have to go absolutely tits up in a dark, dark way in this film.
Man, how does Cameron stay sane? He's in charge of so many factors of production, people on set, and so much money. I'd like to be a filmmaker but I mean the thought of having even 1 million$ for me to do what I want with is incredible. 400 mil is like... wut.Dead said:I meant 400+ for part 1
Im guessing the budget for 2 and 3 together will be something like 600+ Million
And make sure you do it in the best theater system you can afford.Dead said:If you ever do, make sure its the Extended Cut

Out of all of Camerons movies, Avatar benefits the most from the extended version (after the Abyss)

Keep in mind he worked on the movie for like 5 years straight tooAngry Fork said:Man, how does Cameron stay sane? He's in charge of so many factors of production, people on set, and so much money. Got rid of my surround sound about a year ago after the receiver broke because it's really not conducive to the shape of my living room. I will deal, though.
