I was gone for one night and the hate on this board has done a 180. Welcome aboard boys. From now until release, let's just hope there's no icebergs. ;)

Has anyone posted this yet? The Guardian posted a negative review from Andrew Pulver, it's the most negative review I've seen so far (**/****)

Yeah, I think I'll be ignoring this review. 'James Cameron just got slack'...what? GTFO! By reading the text it doesn't even seem to fit the 2 star rating.

I just saw Empire's 5/5 review. I have no reason to doubt this film is quality apart from that review. I simply don't trust Empire reviews at all.

Empire reviews are notoriously inconsistent, over inflated for big fan boy projects and then sensible and fair for others.
Empire's reviews are the only ones I trust. They review most films very fairly and decidedly un-fanboyish. Whereas based on Internet opinion you'd think the Twilight movies would be the worst pieces of trash ever.
Empire reviewed them fairly and gave them a deserved 3 stars each (though I think the theatrical release of the first Twilight got 4 stars, which is a bit much). Sure they miss the mark sometimes (who doesn't), but on the whole Empire is just about the only major publication that views movies for what they are. Event movies, arthouse films or whatever doesn't matter much to them though they do skew towards the mainstream a bit more. But that's alright because that's who it's aimed towards.

a spelling mistake? get him! :lol

a refreshing slap on the face over all the hyperbolic fanboy 'critics', all of course go safely unscrutinized (and also that source of the first positive review... whaddayouknow The Guardian)

happens all the time, first negative review (there have been less-than-impressed comments) that stock role of some frenzied and hyped psycho attacking the critic's affiliations/history/mindset or trying to intepret his/her objections as something towards their preference

rottenwatch indeed

Ok, Total Film's review (5/5)

Verdict:

Game-changing - yes. Spectacular - absolutely. Occasional dodgy dialogue and dramatic imperfections - of course. But still - wait for it… - a titanic achievement.

And with Andrew Pulver's review, the two stars might be trying a bit too hard to grab attention, but I never expected everyone to like this film.

well, i'm on the hype train now. woohoo!

where's ebert's review, btw? he hasn't even twittered about it.

First sleep after Avatar, can't wait to see this again!

THR and Variety as well as many Academy Award journalists giving it overwhelming praise? I hardly call them hyperbolic fanboy critics.

Cameron won't rest for a fucking second will he? He's now planning on breaking the world record for deepest deep-sea dive at 36,000ft. He's already helped design the thing and its already half built down here in Australia. I imagine this has something to do with the pic The Dive he's producing up in Queensland as well.

Cameron better not die before he makes Battle Angel.

I really don't think Inglorious Basterds has a better shot then Avatar... yes you can say Sci-Fi never win... but from the reviews this is kind of a completely new film... not your traditional Sci-Fi.

What reviews have you been reading? :lol Because almost everything Ive read, while positive, makes a point to mention how this is one of the more unoriginal concepts out there.

what in the blue hell @ the guardian review:lol

looking at his reviews on rotten, This is it is better than Avatar and Avatar is on par with Terminator Salvation and Wolverine:lol

The Academy doesn't really care about originality though, unfortunately. That's not to say I think it will win, but something to consider.

Always a terrible idea to look at a reviewer's history and go "he gave X movie this score but Y movie this score lol". Not a single reviewer could have all movies rated in perfect order on a 5 star system.

Also, This Is It got great reviews.

well he could have at least given it a 3 star. Avatar, Salvation, and Wolverine being the same score just ain't right

because the movie is actually fucking awesome and there is massive crow on the menu.

I'm not so convinced about that yet. I still think it looks like a decent movie at best and I haven't warmed up to the character design of the blue dudes at all yet. But I guess I'll see it sooner or later, although I doubt I'm gonna go watch it in a cinema. I ain't wearing glasses on my glasses like some type of internet meme.

And I thought we only have the issue of what is the 'right' score on the gaming side of the forum.

You can see it in 2D theaters.

You can still see it in 2D at the theater. Why would you rule out a theater experience for an event movie just because you don't like 3D glasses?

Sorry I wasn't trying to either. Distinguishing the relative credibility of The Guardian, and by extension the trade mags you listed, in the ol' brackets was my effort (honest!) at distancing them from well y'know... what you do ;)

Listen, this is is all my rag on the whole Rottenwatch "one by one add up the total" construction and fanboysim and expectation/creepiness in celebrating spastic twitter comments. I expect appreciation from major critics of course. I'm a bit more on board than at the start of the day. But I still expect reservations.
There are some tempered key spots in McCarthy's review which are going to trickle in.. and have already done so in a few critic's insights.

And um, Academy Award journalists? What, like the folks over at incontention and hollywood elsewhere? I mean.. those are news blog perspectives for me. Kris Tapley is readable, but he's a squealer too.

hmm where do I know this guy?

3D is getting blown out of proportion here. People need to realize that 95% of screens showing the film will be regular 35mm.

Hey Sculli, you mind if I update the thread title with the current score like every Friday?

For example now it would be "Rottenwatch: AVATAR (100%)"

Really? I would say that 35mm and regular digital screenings probably take up 70-80% of the screens, with Digital 3D and IMAX 3D taking up a good 20-30%. It's showing in 3D -everywhere-.

He wont mind, so long as the score remains desirable :lol

I have to say I'm surprised... I haven't followed this movie at all, but I saw a trailer and thought it looked pretty awful... and then Cameron didn't do himself any favors with his rambling nonsense at Ubisoft's press conference at E3. Anyway I know nothing about this except that it's in 3D, it's by Cameron, and that the trailer looked like it was for an awful film.

The positive reviews are getting my attention, though. I hate going to 3D films though... I already have glasses, and wearing two sets is so dumb :( And I don't have contacts (and don't really want them).

Cameron said 1/3rd of the people will be seeing it in 3D, 2/3rds in 2D.

I don't particulary like going to the theatre at all in general, to be honest. There's rarely enough leg room and especially during a long movie it can be very uncomfortable. And in this case I'm not even hyped up for the movie. I usually prefer watching movies on a large TV-screen at home instead. The whole 3D aspect doesn't really interest me at all either.

Simon Pegg's Tweet's on Avatar:

Hello to the fellow tweeple I met outside. Have just sat down in the Empire Leicester Sq, 3D glasses at the ready. Avatar imminent.

Avatar ........................ tweetless. Just tweetless in the best possible way.

Just left the party. The movie is a game changer. Still buzzing. Tweet over.

Morning after, Avatar is an extraordinary piece of cinema. Breathtaking in 2 dimensions, let alone 3. Congrats and respect to all involved.

It's a familiar story but it needs broad mythological strokes to counterpoint the intense visuals. Narrative complexity would self defeat.

The unfunny smurfs refrain reminds me if the pre Star Trek 90210 twattery. Unite and hate before seeing a theatrical frame? Makes me sad.

If you want to read an actual review, rather than my punter musings here's Empire's Chris Hewitt (mild spoilers) http://tiny.cc/3WSmw

my mate and i can't stop fucking babbling about this movie. it was BEYOND epic. HUGE. absolutely immersive, beautiful, exciting, fun, moving (surprisingly) and just awesome in every way. the cast was amazing. michelle rodriguez was great. the atmosphere and world that he's created is unlike anything i've ever seen, i feel like i just woke up from a dream. THIS is what cinema is all about. excuse my enthusiasm, but HOLY SHIT.

It's also gotta have a little comment afterwards like the stars RW thread.

"Rotten Watch: AVATAR (Directed by JAMES CAMERON) RT says it's better than TDK AND Star Trek (10,000%) "

Still stinging from the potshot at TDK? :lol

Based on what? Do you have more accurate numbers which indicate otherwise or are you just making your own assumption?

I am making my own assumption, because I know how much 35mm, 2D cinemas dwarf 3D ones. Not to mention that your average joe isnt going to care about 3D and save a few bucks and go with 2D.

Well shit. The youtube videos made the movie seem so bad, but now i will have to see it!
Seriously, all the trailers and commercials I've seen just look absolutely awful to me, like the Grand Canyon of Uncanny Valleys (and not just the blue people).

But everybody is still gushing and the reviews are coming in. I'm still going to go see it and do so with an open mind. Cameron's movies are always enjoyable experiences at the very least. Anything else is bonus as far as I'm concerned.

That would be awesome!

Maybe in the US, but I don't think 3d screens are that common in Europe for instance.
