Bays exultant technological thrills climaxed with Transformers 2s war metaphor, where mankinds historical continuity was at stake. But Cameron gets sappy and hypocritical.
Scullibundo said:I still can't get over how good the 3D was. Unbelievable.
Karma Kramer said:Did you experience any ghosting... or did it seem smoother then normal?
Scullibundo said:Smoother, much smoother. I didn't experience any noticable ghosting.
Krev said:Armond's pan/love-letter to Transformers 2 is already up.
Karma Kramer said:Fuck, I'm regretting buying tickets at RealD now... hopefully I can get tickets again this weekend for Imax.
DeathNote said:IIRC only certain things popped out in UP. There were times when it wasn't 3D at all. 3D seems gimmicky as far as certain things popping out at you. Was everything filmed stereoscopically where it constantly has depth?
And is this the first time someone has done that? I think I remember education stuff at imax banking on popping out at you.Scullibundo said:Definitely do it. IMAX is the way to go for this movie. I can't imagine watching it on a smaller screen. Might try get tix for Sunday or something.
Yes there is a constant depth, but never depth in that things are coming out of the screen and you might try to grab what is in front of you, its more layers of depth in the screen as if you could reach in and touch something. Layers of depth all the time. Crazy immersive. In all honesty I wasn't expecting to be as blown away by the 3D as I was. This is not gimmicky 3D in the slightest.
In fact, I think the best 3D parts of the film were those on built sets. I can't even explain why.

Jax said:JusT left the theatre. Fucking incredible. Superlative wonderful. Experential and emotive. I'm probably gonna be watching this 3 times at the cinema. Kudos to everyone involved and James Cameron and worthington for knocking my socks off. The 3d was fucking amazing. Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow.
Ok, so, basically, the predictive story with likable characters is an excuse to show off a photo-realistic CG world with some live action in stereoscopic 3D. Character development and like-able characters are VERY important to me. But, if the world amazes me then the story and character development shouldn't take away from my rating because that wasn't meant to be the focus. Last year before I really knew anything about Avatar I got the idea to record something with two cameras from two different angels. Then edit them side by side to cross my eyes. Never completed the task. So, I'm really interested in the tech. I'm hoping I'll be amazed because Battle Angel would theoretically be amazing. It'd IMO ideally focus on better character design, development, and story. Epic anime characters are amazing and I'm assuming the Na'Vi will never reach the epicness.Scullibundo said:Like this, yes. The 3D is never distracting in this film. It absolutely adds to the experience and I can't imagine how disappointing a 2D screening would be after having seen it in 3D.
I saw it with the opaque lenses - at bondi junction3d - chose NOT to watch at IMAX. It can ruin the experience. Too much to take in, brain can't handle --- ruined watchmen for me.Karma Kramer said:What 3D did you see it in?

It was fantastic!!! The sense of depth.. This wasn't Beowulf - with it's spear in ur face... This was an environment you inhabited an the 3d made a lot of things seem like you were there. It's not 3d as we know it. It's something new I think. Depth/space/volume.
Scullibundo said:Out of all of the Cameron wives, I was always fond of Gale Anne Hurd. Just seemed like a really intelligent woman.
BlueTsunami said:Battle Angel is the Cameron movie I'm waiting for. Unfortunately it'll probably take another 10 years.
jett said:What? Whatever people think of Speed Racer, it's masterfully directed by the Wachowskis and employs storytelling techniques never before seen.

Zeliard said:Jesus @ GAF's enormous love for Speed Racer.
Maybe I need to see that movie.
Zeliard said:Fawkers.
Is the Blu-Ray hot?
Scullibundo said:Ewww Bondi Junction Dolby. Fuck. That. SHIT.
I really need to sleep on this film. So that is what I'm going to do. You have my immediate impressions, but I need to mull this film over in my head.
Scullibundo said:Oh yeah I forgot to mention that. The whole cinema erupted into applause. That doesn't happen a lot here in Australia. Usually we try to shuffle out as quickly as possible around here, but the place erupted in claps.
Also, Zoe Saldana's performance was great.
Okay, I must be behind the times. What 3d is using these opaque lenses several people have referred to?Jax said:I saw it with the opaque lenses - at bondi junction3d - chose NOT to watch at IMAX. It can ruin the experience. Too much to take in, brain can't handle --- ruined watchmen for me.

Scullibundo said:Wait, Krev...you saw it at the Ritz? Are you motherfucking insane?
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Randwick fucking Ritz? REALLY? REALLY?
:lol :lol :lol
I couldn't think of a better way to ruin the scale of this movie. :lol
Neverender said:Hey I've read that certain 3D theatres are better than others and I really want to see this movie in the best setting possible, so can somebody tell me if this ( http://villagecinemas.com.au/Cinemas/Digital-3D.htm ) is the type of 3D set-up I should see this film in?

Okay, so the frames are opaque and the lenses are clear. Are these the best kind?Jax said:![]()
I wore these. They were perfect. I wanted to steal a pair for home use.![]()
Krev said:Should be pretty good, but fluctuates depending on the cinema.
They use RealD.
Also, yay for all the Speed Racer love in this thread. Speed Racer is so awesome. So awesome. Especially digitally projected.
It's not that they're underdeveloped until the end, but that they're not developed quickly enough at some points. The degree to which you've come to care about the world sneaks up on and surprises you by the conclusion, though.Justinian said:Sculli, do you agree with Krev that the characters were a bit hard to connect to until the end?
Did they seem underdeveloped? This is the only concern of mine. I have no problems with a simple story or dialogue if they are executed well.
Peru said:Saw it with RealD 3d. To say that the movie is big and dumb is an objective fact, and the dialogue is beyond parody. However, the work WETA has done with the special effects is constantly mindblowing, with no trace of uncanny valley on humanoid characters, and with no sense of 'computer game'y-ness throughout the 80% of the movie where nothing real is seen. It's worth watching, but the real world analogy is ham-fisted and the story development is as predictable as possibly could be.
