I'm going to be near an IMAX where I think this is playing tomorrow (Southbank, Brisbane), but I don't have time.

Mildly frustrating.

Bay’s exultant technological thrills climaxed with Transformers 2’s war metaphor, where mankind’s historical continuity was at stake. But Cameron gets sappy and hypocritical.

:lol

IIRC only certain things popped out in UP. There were times when it wasn't 3D at all. 3D seems gimmicky as far as certain things popping out at you. Was everything filmed stereoscopically where it constantly has depth?

Fuck, I'm regretting buying tickets at RealD now... hopefully I can get tickets again this weekend for Imax.

Definitely do it. IMAX is the way to go for this movie. I can't imagine watching it on a smaller screen. Might try get tix for Sunday or something.

Yes there is a constant depth, but never depth in that things are coming out of the screen and you might try to grab what is in front of you, its more layers of depth in the screen as if you could reach in and touch something. Layers of depth all the time. Crazy immersive. In all honesty I wasn't expecting to be as blown away by the 3D as I was. This is not gimmicky 3D in the slightest.

In fact, I think the best 3D parts of the film were those on built sets. I can't even explain why. That scene I described in spoiler tags as my favourite being the part where I said HOLY FUCK at the 3D. Really impressed the hell out of me.

And is this the first time someone has done that? I think I remember education stuff at imax banking on popping out at you.

Like this, yes. The 3D is never distracting in this film. It absolutely adds to the experience and I can't imagine how disappointing a 2D screening would be after having seen it in 3D.

JusT left the theatre. Fucking incredible. Superlative wonderful. Experential and emotive. I'm probably gonna be watching this 3 times at the cinema. Kudos to everyone involved and James Cameron and worthington for knocking my socks off. The 3d was fucking amazing. Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow.

Ok, so, basically, the predictive story with likable characters is an excuse to show off a photo-realistic CG world with some live action in stereoscopic 3D. Character development and like-able characters are VERY important to me. But, if the world amazes me then the story and character development shouldn't take away from my rating because that wasn't meant to be the focus. Last year before I really knew anything about Avatar I got the idea to record something with two cameras from two different angels. Then edit them side by side to cross my eyes. Never completed the task. So, I'm really interested in the tech. I'm hoping I'll be amazed because Battle Angel would theoretically be amazing. It'd IMO ideally focus on better character design, development, and story. Epic anime characters are amazing and I'm assuming the Na'Vi will never reach the epicness.

when the humans attacked and the tree came down. I think I damn near soiled my pants
amazingly realised and powerful.

the movie is mostly amazing for the tech but the above is the biggest moment in the movie for me. Gobsmackingly awesome. And that's one of the xxxth amazing shots/scenes is this. All of it made all the more amazing by the 3d. I kept thinking how much I'd lost out on if I'd watch this in 2d. Won't even be the same movie.

Additional James Cameron gathered together the best crack ace team in the 3d busines. Becuase the world they created... Well that's a feat of human ingenuity. The fully realised forests, the amazing visuals etc etc. Amazing. I was constantly amazed by what they were
showing me. The camera moving through the woods, you/us following. The pollen floating everywhere. Beautiful.

And on top of all this tech/wizardry? The performance by navis/humans across the board was flawless. Sam worthington is gonna be the biggest name In show business after this. And how to you gauge impact? The fact that I teared up at least 3 times and my mates girlfriend cried and at the end of it, my mate left the cinema wiping his eyes. James Cameron delivered. Big time. There was applause at the end of it

You need to see this. You need to see it in 3d

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that. The whole cinema erupted into applause. That doesn't happen a lot here in Australia. Usually we try to shuffle out as quickly as possible around here, but the place erupted in claps.

Also, Zoe Saldana's performance was great.

I saw it with the opaque lenses - at bondi junction3d - chose NOT to watch at IMAX. It can ruin the experience. Too much to take in, brain can't handle --- ruined watchmen for me.

It was fantastic!!! The sense of depth.. This wasn't Beowulf - with it's spear in ur face... This was an environment you inhabited an the 3d made a lot of things seem like you were there. It's not 3d as we know it. It's something new I think. Depth/space/volume.

Ewww Bondi Junction Dolby. Fuck. That. SHIT.

I really need to sleep on this film. So that is what I'm going to do. You have my immediate impressions, but I need to mull this film over in my head.

Just got back from IMAX 3D in Melbourne.

Absolutely amazing experience, the 3D became seamless after not too long and I was constantly blown away scene after scene.

Applause after my showing as well, my girlfriend next to me being one of the first to start clapping. :lol

Just got back from Avatar 3D in Sydney. Best film since Titanic? Nay, best film since sliced bread! :0

This almost makes up for having to live in a country banning 18+ games and planning to censor the Internets. :/

Out of all of the Cameron wives, I was always fond of Gale Anne Hurd. Just seemed like a really intelligent woman.

I see right through your Terminator bias :lol

Battle Angel is the Cameron movie I'm waiting for. Unfortunately it'll probably take another 10 years.

Hate to rain on the parade, but he recently said he doesnt think he will even make that movie.

What? Whatever people think of Speed Racer, it's masterfully directed by the Wachowskis and employs storytelling techniques never before seen.

I love when us Speed Racer brethren assemble :D

Jesus @ GAF's enormous love for Speed Racer.

Maybe I need to see that movie.

You do, ASAmotherfuckingP. Really though, you NEEDED to see it theatrically. Moreso, you needed to see it theatrically and DIGITALLY PROJECTED. No hyperbole, seeing Speed Racer digitally projected was the most impressive visual experience Ive ever had.

Is the Blu-Ray hot?

I just googled zoe.. her? :P haha. Yes. She was greatt!!

Also of note: The villian Yes, he was amazing. All the way to the end. Perfectly cast, I don't know what else he's been in but he's a relentless SOB and I'm glad he's nobody I could pick from a different movie. BIG SPOILER
was so fucking happy that he got those arrows through the heart in the end.
:D

Wait, Krev...you saw it at the Ritz? Are you motherfucking insane?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Randwick fucking Ritz? REALLY? REALLY?

:lol :lol :lol

I couldn't think of a better way to ruin the scale of this movie. :lol

Okay, I must be behind the times. What 3d is using these opaque lenses several people have referred to?

I wore these. They were perfect. I wanted to steal a pair for home use. :P

Sculli, you really need to update the OP with a faq of the recent 3D technologies. It seems like every page has tons of people asking about them.

Heheheh. Well, I want to scale up and up and up on the screen size. Plus, honestly their RealD projection is perfect quality. Much better than what's at EQ. Screen size wise it's not that far out from those 3D screens, either.

Anyway, next viewing is at IMAX, so I don't really care. :lol

The film was so immersive... that I noted this while watching avatar. Its like the audience disappeared.

re: Sydney Imax viewing... apparently completely sold out til the 24th of Decemeber so good luck getting a ticket :P

Hey I've read that certain 3D theatres are better than others and I really want to see this movie in the best setting possible, so can somebody tell me if this ( http://villagecinemas.com.au/Cinemas/Digital-3D.htm ) is the type of 3D set-up I should see this film in?

Should be pretty good, but fluctuates depending on the cinema.
They use RealD.

Also, yay for all the Speed Racer love in this thread. Speed Racer is so awesome. So awesome. Especially digitally projected.

Sweet thanks.

Sculli, do you agree with Krev that the characters were a bit hard to connect to until the end?

Did they seem underdeveloped? This is the only concern of mine. I have no problems with a simple story or dialogue if they are executed well.

Damn these reviews from AusGAF are getting me very excited for tonight!
8 more hours to go :D

I'll post my impressions after I see it tonight, but I'm seeing it again on Thursday, and then again on Friday, so by Saturday morning I'll know how it stands up to multiple viewings :lol

It's not that they're underdeveloped until the end, but that they're not developed quickly enough at some points. The degree to which you've come to care about the world sneaks up on and surprises you by the conclusion, though.

As has been said, Zoe is lovely. Just had to say it again.

Saw it with RealD 3d. To say that the movie is big and dumb is an objective fact, and the dialogue is beyond parody. However, the work WETA has done with the special effects is constantly mindblowing, with no trace of uncanny valley on humanoid characters, and with no sense of 'computer game'y-ness throughout the 80% of the movie where nothing real is seen. It's worth watching, but the real world analogy is ham-fisted and the story development is as predictable as possibly could be.

Predictable yes, but entertaining?
