It's really surprising how many of the best critics really like Avatar, yet the internet wankers typing in their basements are the ones who hate it.Mifune said:Christ, even the New Yorker loved it.

Also... right now at work and my eyes seem to wonk out from the 2.5 hours of awesauce AVATAR viewing last night.
James Cameron is king!

Yeah, remember when the Watchmen haters used the Top Critics rating to bash it?zander106 said:Indeed. The "Top Critics" rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of today sits at 94%. We'll see where it all ends up on Friday, but when you're seeing David Denby climb on board, that suggests that there may be support from some surprising quarters.

While a lot of people will say it's bloated, I think a longer cut would really help the film.
If the special edition doesn't see any theatrical exhibition, I might just hold off on watching it until I have a 3D TV.

Does Cameron believe himself when he says the scenes were cut because a really long 3D movie might be tough on an audience instead of the IMAX time limit?Krev said:Good news. Cameron says that the DVD and Blu-Ray will have the longer cut of the film.

Heh, not a suprise for me. But I know there was someone here who was pretty damn adamant that the theatrical version was gonna be the "final cut". Adding that there wouldn't be any unreleased footage because it wasn't rendered. Well, Cameron admits there that they did indeed have rendered footage that they cut. And who knows, depending on what he wants to add, along with how succesful the film will be, he might even have other scenes rendered or re-rendered.Krev said:Good news. I'd be very curious to see some 2D impressions, though I'm gonna watch it in 3D. Haven't seen any in this thread or in the reviews.
Wow, Denby loved the shit out of it.

Nah, 3D BluRay will support 'real' 3D if you're willing to buy a polarized monitor such as the JVC one I linked to earlier in this thread. I've had a demo of the JVC monitor, and it's extraordinary.TAJ said:Is LieMax seriously brighter? (Please, God... let it be so) I need input from people who have seen every type.
Help me, LieMax. You're my only hope.
My disappointment with 3DVision was especially crushing. The upcoming Blu-ray 3D process will basically be the same as that, and I hate it... hate, hate, hate. Saves me the expense of a new TV, I guess.
Drops are inevitable. The earliest reviews are from people who couldn't wait to see the movie, or shills. There's also the 'critics who want to shit on anything most other people seem to like' factor.MNC said:Wasn't this at 90% before? Or have I been imagining things?
3DVision is "real 3d". (left-right alternating with shutter glasses) It's just dim. I've seen polarized 3D in two theaters, and it sucked equally at both.stuburns said:Nah, 3D BluRay will support 'real' 3D if you're willing to buy a polarized monitor such as the JVC one I linked to earlier in this thread. It's been bouncing around. From 95% to 83%. Then up to 92%, then a wave of five rotten reviews (mostly small online sites) pushed it down to 83%. Now more press reviews hit and it's at 84%.MNC said:Wasn't this at 90% before? Or have I been imagining things?
Indeed, I guess 'high quality 3D' would have been a more apt term.TAJ said:3DVision is "real 3d". It's just dim.
The 3D effect is great, and some people love the process. Then again, some people would be really impressed with The Dark Knight Blu-ray on a non-LED LCD. It drives me up the wall, but not nearly as much as 3DVision.stuburns said:Indeed, I guess 'high quality 3D' would have been a more apt term.
Ahh! Awesome!stuburns said:I've had a demo of the JVC monitor, and it's extraordinary.
The story itself was predictable and I found the pacing quite odd but I think that may have just been for me.
Fair enough, although what I meant was any digital form of 3D you want, 3D BluRay is bound to facilitate, personally I think polarized is way better than shutter glasses, but I guess it's taste.TAJ said:The 3D effect is great, and some people love the process. The specs aren't finalized yet, I got a nice demo of the JVC including some 1080p 3D video, but not out of a disc drive.Jtwo said:I'm really curious about 3D bluray.

polyh3dron said:Yeah, remember when the Watchmen haters used the Top Critics rating to bash it?
Just some trailers and clips, only a few minutes. Got a demo of the Avatar game in 3D, got to play that for about twenty minutes afterward. JVC have some sort of demo reel for showing it off, if there's a retailer near you, you could ask to check it out I imagine. They're not commercially available in the UK yet, and when they are I won't be able to afford one, but they are pretty stunning.Jtwo said:Stub, was it just stock footage? Or was it a movie?
