I think you're being purposely obtuse, sir. As traditionally based and spiritual as the Na'vi were, I think its a bit ridiculous to assume that "didn't give a fuck".
I think that it's also the case that most Na'vi didn't have a reason to try and ride one of those things. Jake had a damn good reason. Plus, since it was his only way to ingratiate himself back into the tribe, he had nothing to lose, and sometimes, approaching an action with such an attitude can actually make us more adept at it. For example, I often end up doing better at video games after I have given up and taken a break and come back to it not caring. Kind of a poor example, but you catch my drift. By having nothing to lose, Jake could afford the risk and could attempt things that might otherwise have been a poor idea.

"you see, there was this magical car, but the driver's side door was locked. but then i thought. . . what if i got in through the passenger side door?"
Like I said earlier, I think that this is just a case of irreconcilable differences. I completely bought everything in the movie. If other people didn't, there's not much that I can do to convince them otherwise.
As far as I know it's true in the VA area. It's like a fucking typhoon is rolling through, everything was gone @ local Giants (milk, fucking salt, etc...). I highly doubt many people making it tonight or early tomorrow to the theaters. That being said, I'm sooooooo glad I caught my IMAX 3D this morning.

I agree. That's one very moving scene for me. This is kind of cinema magic you can not duplicate in any other media.
Also about the special effect. The trees in the movie blow away any other CGI trees I ever seen. I was watching Jake jumping with the Cameron Diaz-looking Navi. And then it hit me, "there is no way they can find fucked up trees like these. These have to be CG trees." Mind blown.
I wasn't expecting much going in, the movie looked good but I wasn't sold. After seeing it, 3D is amazing, and the movie was the movie of the year for me.
I really didn't feel like there were any plotholes or anything. Everything tied together nicely. It wasn't like Transformers 2 where it was all over the place. Felt extremely well tuned and connected. Allot of the plotholes mentioned so far just feel like people digging for faults.
The problem was simply, It didn't do a damn thing that was original with the story. Either people can get over it or they can't.

Another issue is that the second trailer pretty much spelled out the entire plot/arc of the movie. At least for your first viewing. I'm interested in seeing how it holds up consecutive times.
Shit the teaser even spoils the death of a major character if you're perceptive enough.
This movie has just blown apart my senses. This movie needs to be seen with your own eyes and experienced first hand because I cannot describe it. I can only relate it to the first time I saw Jurassic Park, Star Wars or LOTR. The quality in the effects are that superb, in fact it is unlike anything that you have ever seen before and will probably hold to be one of the best around for quite some time.
There is a general look to the movie that few other movies have able to capture properly. It's vibrant, vivid and completely submerges you into the experience despite being a bit OVER colorful at times. This James Cameron flexing his artistic and creative muscle and it truly shows.
The 3D is well done, easily the best use of 3D yet and there is a lot of it. As long as you can get over the fact that you need to view it through the glasses, it's a phenomenal experience.
So yeah story is mediocre, you know what's gonna happen from the first minute. There are no mega twists or anything like that and the story isn't original (blah blah you all know the drill). Some of the characters are kind of the cardboard cut out variety but they aren't that bad and you can easily overlook this. You will be so taken in by the visual feast that sometimes you don't care what the people are saying as you are left with your jaw hanging open, minutes at times at the wonderful scenery that is seen in Pandora.
The movie turned out better than I expected and honestly I didn't think that it would sell me on the 3D stuff. But it has and now I want all CG-fest type movies to feature 3D in it with the same diligence as that in Avatar. That will be an extremely difficult task as there will be times where the 3D is so subtle you don't even know it's there because you are so caught up in the moment. Oh and this movie does CG action right, unlike the travesty that is the Transformers series. I can just see Michael Bay's next Transformers movie being called Transformers 3D. LOL!
Bottom Line: Go watch this movie now and in 3D + Imax. I can't fathom watching this movie in 2D, the movie is too much of a spectacle to have it be viewed in anything less than the best. Let yourself be immersed and regress to your former childhood who is able to be awe-inspired. Leave your cynicism out the door when you enter, it will do you good. Don't fret over the story or the characters, they are NOT the main show. Just... enjoy the movie for the technical masterpiece that it is.
It's precisely his more aggressive nature that makes it make sense to me that Jake was able to tame the Last Shadow once he was on it. He wouldn't have been reluctant to hit/choke/whatever the shit out of that thing because he comes from a different point of reference than the rest of the Na'vi.
i was gonna hit on this. There's also the fact that he represented the untameable stallion that most other Na'vi were probably too afraid to even approach. i'm sure there's a name for this trope. At this point, Jake's got nothing to lose. He can't go back to Quarritch and he can't go back the Na'vi... unless he does something to gain their trust.
Did Quarritch ever utter the line "A human in an avatar body. That's a potent mix."? i remember it from the trailer but not the movie.

Also, there's some interesting themes in this allegedly simple story. Think "Jake's avatar experience as a form of escapism" and "the inner human desire to go back to its primitive roots and the thrilling ordeals that they entail". I'll leave the analysis to someone else, though: I'm way too lazy and I'd rather just enjoy the film.
:lol Perfect. I was watching the trailer and I had absolutely no idea what was happening; the 'story' of the trailer wasn't particularly coherent or effective.
the bald marine in the mech, wynnfield, got trampled.
At least it sounded sorta like it to me.
I also didn't catch any plot holes in this film. Extraordinary events to be sure, but I think picking on those is, well, nitpicking at this point.
One thing I will agree on though is that
Michelle Rodriguez' death was a waste. Did she really affect anything with her last-ditch attempt? Perhaps she distracted the Dragon, but that was all.
And now, I think someone needs to freaking slap the people at Blizzard and tell them to cancel whatever live-action crap they signed up for with their WoW film.
I mean for crying out loud, if there was ever a movie that would make the best use of this tech that Cameron has created, it's freaking WoW.

He said it but it was just cut differently in the trailer.
I noticed a few things missing from the movie that was in the trailers. What I remember atm is the shot of
the RDA ships firing on the Tree from a perspective behind them, as well as a shot of Neytiri crying over her fathers body from the first trailer that wasnt in the movie.

I can't even recall the trailers...I think I saw the first one and that was it. I went in with extremely small amount of what I was going to see.
Almost everything was spelled out for you
To name a few
Jake riding the giant bird later on, when they brought it up in the middle. Saying how only a few can do it.
The tribal leader getting killed. Replaced by the guy who never quite liked Jake and wanted to kill him from the beginning. But they come to terms. They even mentioned right in the beginning he was "next in line for the throne"
Jake having to reveal he was giving info and knew it was coming. You needed that moment where the girl left him now
Minute they say that they maybe able to transfer the doc's spirit into the avatars...duh it's going to end with Jake going into his

Just got back from seeing this in the theaters. I thought it was incredible and hands down the best movie I've seen in years. Everything about it was great, even Michelle Rodriguez who I normally can't stand. I actually liked her in this movie. I'll being seeing it again in theaters and buying it on Blu-Ray. Ironically, the only thing I thought was overhyped was the 3D effect. It didn't wow me at all like was hoping it would, but it was cool.
LOL this is a movie about aliens, crazy spiritual energies linking worlds, floating mountains, inter species bonding, supposed technology that is years ahead of our current time...
It would be impossible for something like this to exist without plot holes. I am pretty sure both Terminator 2 AND Aliens had plenty of plot holes in them, as do most other science fiction movies. After all this is a SCIENCE FICTION with a huge dose of FANTASY thrown in the mix.
Characters not acting the way they should be? I bet you wouldn't act the same staring up at a 9 foot tall blue guy with a tail who is trying to talk with the earth using his hair. :lol
Hah, shit you are right. Those really did give away the entire film. Not to say it wasn't already predictable enough, but that sure doesn't help things.
I have such a hard time not getting caught in arguments when I read posts like these. I could defend for you why I think that it's a downright great film, but I know I won't change anybody's mind.

jake in the bar
the shot of the soldiers in the mechs with the tops closings
the shot of jake opening his eyes at the start of the teaser
the long line of soldiers running into the back of the ship from the teaser

8/10. I think District 9 was better but this movie was a lot of fun.
Pros:
+ The graphics. Holy fuck. When I saw the trailer, I thought the art direction looked rote. Boy was I wrong. I would not watch this movie in 2D. The 3D is amazing; however I feel like it's 90% there and still not as perfect as it could be. Nit-picks aside, the movie is fucking beautiful.. so much that the first half is basically like 'How awesome are these graphics? So awesome"
+ Everything involving the Na'vi was great. Really enjoyed the entire love story and every one of Jake's and Neytiri's scenes. Cameron absolutely nailed the charm and joy that emitted from these characters and the environment surronding them.
+ Bad-ass action and chase scenes.
+ Both Zoe Saldana and CCH Pounder (Captain Wyms!) were great in their roles.
Cons:
- The score. Completely unoriginal, bland and downright average.
- The standard action-movie trope of 'character does something bad-ass, then delivers a horribly trite line afterwards'. This movie has some truly cringe-worthy moments. "Get home for dinner" "I see you" etc.
- The main bad guy. Am I the only one tired of the
American Army Jarhead douchebag
stereotype? The guy is a fucking walking cliche delivering tired one-liners and bad acting. It was so corny and not in a good way (like many other scenes in the film)
- Ribsi was horribly miscast. Worthington was understated and banal to say the least (I know its a character trait but man he seemed bored.) Also, why does Michelle Rodriguez still get work?
- The film was 3 hours long and still didn't feature enough exposition; the Maguffin and Iraq war similiarites are all fine but I just wish the plot wasn't so paper-thin; movie could have been funnier too to be honest.
Didn't care about the plotlines and to be fair, the occasionally mediocre dialogue was nowhere near as embarassing as say Transformers 2.
Overall, a movie you NEED to see in Imax 3d.
I would have liked to have seen a bit more development in the love story. What was there was really good, but I wanted even more. I'm hoping for an extensive extended cut of this movie; it feels like there's so much more that could be said/shown.
there was definitely something vaguely sexual about
the connecting of the hair to all sorts of things. like, "hey, this tree, i'm gonna fuck this tree, here we go." and the look on his face when he connects with the horse, i swear to god, i almost lost it.
