All that said, you know the marketing for the sequel will begin a fucktonne earlier than this one to generate hype for something that will now have name recognition.

You teach studios they can develop their own success outside the quality of the movie, and that's what happens.

I much prefer a method of throwing a bunch of movies out for each market, and see if one of them catches fire. I like the control better in the public's hands. It's just more honest. From a studios standpoint though, business is up from what it was in the 90's, but it eliminates the possibility of something like a Star Wars or even Titanic this day and age - which is a thrill for cinema fans. This is kind of in that vein though.

Artbook is amazing.
I think I might pick one of these up (or both). Does anyone else have reviews to offer?

I've picked them both up today. Amazon reviews are pretty good ( there's a video of the artbook available, and it looks astounding). Can't really find others on them. But I'll take Daniel Planeviews' opinions on it.

What is this based on? It's the most obnoxious statement I've read on here in a long time.

You want to log into GAF more often then sweetheart.

......,now that's obnoxious.

Almost 8000 posts of hate. Skip it and see Alvin and the Chipmunks 2.

I'm planning on it, but I doubt it will be able to top the first Alvin and the Chimpmunks, it was amazing.

Yeah, this type of marketing only happens if the studio geniunely believes in the product. It was a huge risk but Fox was confident it would pay off.

I gotta ask, is the noise the banshee's make just ripped from Jurassic Park's Velociraptors? I swear they do exactly the same almost barking noise the first time you see them. I was shitting myself.

Cameron is scaring the kid inside of you.

Meh, you can't blame me from hating on 3D when my only experience had been Journey to the Center of the Earth back then, on Dolby3D no less. Avatar actually made me not hate Dolby3D anymore, which is pretty remarkable. :P

And you can't blame me for not liking the Na'Vi design based on that teaser, either(although the teaser did grow on me). It was the Avatar Day footage that put me full on board the avatrain.

Also protip: I sported this avatar for a while months ago. :P

Don't you mean the horses? Their noise did sound like the velociraptors in JP3, when they were communicating.

Yeah I'm still pretty worried about the bluray cover. Hopefully its this final poster, but even that isn't great.

I'd buy it.

[IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/stuburns/AvatarCover.jpg

But I don't think there has been any great posters for the film so far, hard to believe given how beautiful the film is.

One thing about this movie that bothers me - the same point that bothered me about Wall*E (another movie I loved):

I find it hard to believe that a human civilization advanced enough to achieve faster than light space travel would act in such an uncivilized manner. Individuals, sure I can understand that. Humanity as a whole? :/ That's why I want deeper character motivations in the villains.

It wasn't all of humanity, though. It was just some mercenaries representing a (clearly corrupt) corporation back on Earth. Ribisi mentioned explicitly in the film towards the start that he wanted the unobtainium for financial reasons, and later on he also mentioned pleasing shareholders.

Ribisi also said that's the reason they didn't just go in guns blazing immediately and went for a more diplomatic solution first - it would have been bad PR if they hadn't, which means there are people on Earth who wouldn't have approved of what they're doing.

What are the current US domestic records? For first week and all that. Has Avatar broken any yet?

It is the highest grossing movie titled Avatar.

It hasn't broken anything.

yet. :P

Will america ever get enough of the floating heads?

But weren't these the only humans on pandora? They sure as hell weren't some random corporation just fooling around. Must've had every permission and instructions from the kings of earth. And didn't someone mention that the unobtanium was vital for mankind or something in that style?

Movie is going to be close to $200M domestic by the end of this weekend, if not slightly over.

Yeah, this one's going to have long legs with all the 3-D theaters, plus the fact that a lot of people will be repeat viewers since they can't replicate that experience at home yet.

Not the strongest or most original movie plot-wise, but to see an imagined world in that much detail and in such a believable fashion is an amazing experience.

Also, are there anyone who still think the Na'vi designs suck?

I can't really see that considering how safe the designs are. I mean in some gifs and avatars here make Jake look like a human with blue skin.

I always liked the Neytiri design from day 1.

Well, Jake is in an Avatar which was made with a mix of human and Na'vi DNA, so it only makes sense that he looks more human like than the Na'vi.

And I my grandfather somehow heard of the movie and wants to see it so I may go see it again if I get the chance to go with him. Can't wait!

Dabookerman said:

I wouldn't say suck, but I'm still bothered by their appearance. As much as I liked the movie (and expect to like it even more in repeat viewings) I have a huge number of nitpicks.

So I know a few in here are predicting this’ll gross over 1 billion worldwide...anyone else starting to think that?

I am too. I'm starting to think that it could top $200M domestically by the end of this weekend!

I'd agree with this. I love the movie, but I was not impressed, even after viewing the movie, by any of the posters.

So it will be the Wii Sports of movies then I guess ;p

Me. As good as the action and CGI was, the design of the Na'vi is still pretty asinine. No to mention those fucking mechs.

I don't think the way it happened with Avatar was planned, or was something that sat comfortable with Fox execs leading up to release.

Cameron planned it this way the WHOLE time! It was no mistake.

Just saw it last night in IMAX 3D. I'm going to be brief, the story wasn't bad. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't anything original and in some areas could have been reworked extensively.

However, in this case the effects overwhelm you and give you an experience short of going to Disney. I've never seen anything like this in my entire life. Regardless of feelings on the plot and gripes, most of the population here will at least get a good amount of enjoyment out of this film and it ranks amongst the mid-range of Cameron's films which isn't a very bad thing either.

I'm really enjoying this sci-fi renaissance.

God, I wish I had more friends so I could go and see the film again :(

Just go by yourself. If you're insecure, trying standing extra close to the person next to you in line, it'll look like you went together.

Anyways, I am looking forward to seeing this, I'll finally get a chnce during the weekend. I haven't seen any footage except for a few of the TV spots, so I expect to see a lot of cool shit for the first time.

One thing I'm wondering about is how this film will be released on DVD and Blu-ray. Apparently all 3D movies up until now have used anaglyph glasses (different colours), which is way lower quality than the polarized glasses used in theatres.

Then I found this: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2009/12/hollywood-has-been-so-enthralled.ars

So it looks like Hollywood has finally got its act together and Blu-ray will have a real 3D standard, which is good, but that still doesn't mean passive polarized glasses at home. In my opinion you would need at least a 120 Hz HDTV, though I don't know for sure.

Does anybody understand the technology behind this and can explain it?

zoukka said:
Your friends buy you stuff?

No, I meant so I would have someone to go with. I should have written "I wish I had friends so I could go and see the film again", the first time I went with my brother and even then I had to buy him a ticket or else he refused to go.

You can read back through this very thread for his impressions of it. His first and second screenings.

If you'll recall, I was converted back at the Avatar Day screening. That crow is old.

He can still fuck himself for treating Avatar The Last Airbender with the same amount of respect he shows Michael Bay.

in the movie?

no, you crazy, that would actualy make the movie a lot less black and white, can't have that

besides, if it was vital for humanitys survival I am quite sure Earth would have send the big guns instead of just one corporation with a PMC that uses outdated tech
as I see it now the thing is just realy expensive and used in some important tech (ftl iirc), but not actual vital for survival

too lazy to read your link, but what I read was that the new blu ray 3d standard plays nice with everything. Polarized glasses, shutter glasses etc etc

Pandorapedia is our friend :)
The RDA

Description: The largest single non-governmental organization in the human universe
Function: Massive corporation involved in interests ranging from mining, transportation, medicines, weapons and communications.
Notes: Various biomes of Pandora. Population concentrated in rainforest regions. More powerful than most Earth governments The Resources Development Administration (RDA) has monopoly rights to all products shipped, derived or developed from Pandora and any other off-Earth location. These rights were granted to RDA in perpetuity by the Interplanetary Commerce Administration (ICA), with the stipulation that they abide by a treaty that prohibits weapons of mass destruction and limits military power in space.
So yeah, because RDA risked pretty much the entire company on space exploration (the notes also mention the construction of the ISV Venture Star practically made them go bankrutpt), they got the rights to do whatever they want as long as they don't try to militarize space or use WMD's.

So if 3D Blu-ray are gonna start coming out in the near future.
How's that gonna go with TV's?
Will our current LCD/Plasma's do the job?
You'll need glasses in order to view it in 3D anyway. So what exactly will the TV's be doing, that our current tv's can't?

3D BluRay would appear to require 120Hz input.
So if you have 120Hz input you will be able to buy a pair of shutter glasses and view it in 3D. Or you can buy a polarized monitor, and use polarized glasses.

To have a decent quality you have to refresh the image more often than the frame changes, this is the same in 2D, however in 2D you're repeating the same frame, so a TV can do it, but with 3D you are alternating between the left and right frame each time, so the TV can't do it.
