The friend that I took to see Avatar last Sunday just told me that he wants to see it again, even though it's so long. I want to see it again, but it really surprised me that he does, it almost struck me as out of character.

Well, my anecdotal evidence has convinced me that it's going to beat Titanic. ;-)
 
I just recently found out that when making the bond, Neytiri was saying "Tsaheylu"

I always thought she saying "the halo" and it only sounded off due to the accent :lol

The artists said that they had to compromise, because Sigourney has a really thin nose, and changing it to the standard Na'vi wide cat nose made her unrecognizable.

I expected to see it happen since I saw it in the guide book. But I guess I never looked at it that way. Makes sense.

I felt that it ruined it. I hated the way her Avatar looked. Somehow it looked too much like her, and that made it look too much like a cartoon to me.

All the other Na'vi and Avatar looked remarkably believable though.

I completely agree. My friend and I both had to try and not laugh the first time we saw her because it looked really...off.

What? Her Avatar was easily the most impressive of capturing the actor's likeness. I don't see how that made her look more "cartoony"

The "get some" soldier was obviously a parody character. He was so animated in his emotions it was funny. Like his expression when he put the mounted gun onto the Samson almost made me laugh
 
Just got back from my first viewing. There probably isn't much to say that hasn't already been said and I'll be skimming the last 10 or so pages of the thread, but I was underwhelmed. Even though I kept my expectations low and knew the story was basically Pocahontas in Space, I was hoping for better characters and maybe a little more ambiguity in the plot.

The visuals, yes were absolutely mind-blowing. There were maybe 2 shots I thought the animation looked off; everything else was astonishingly beautiful and real. The facial capture was amazing in how subtle it was, even small tics conveyed emotion.

But throughout the film a lot of little things gnawed at me and kept me from being totally drawn into it, not the least of which was Horner's entirely unremarkable score; I'm not even that familiar with his previous scores and I caught A Beautiful Mind cues aplenty.

The pacing in the middle seemed to go too fast; I didn't understand the humans' plan. First they bulldoze the first big area, but that's not what they're really after. Then they destroy the Hometree, but that's not enough, even though I thought the big deposit of unobtanium (lol) was under that. Then they want to continue on to Eywa and completely destroy that too leaving Na'vi absolutely nowhere to go. I'm sure there's something I missed, but it was almost anticlimactic since they spent a lot of exposition describing the Hometree as the ultimate goal and...they topple it in a few minutes, before the climactic battle even starts. Only after that is Jake able to rally the entire Na'vi population to fight with massively inferior weapons. What, the huge bulldozer wasn't a big enough signal?

Am I the only one surprised that the Na'vi kiss just like humans, and apparently have the same sexual anatomy?

How come during the first attack, the Na'vi arrows bounce right off the thopter windows but suddenly in the final battle the arrows pierce them completely?

They were good, but it still looked cartoony. The most realistic CGI I've seen was the Flying Dutchman in POTC, looked photo realistic at times.

I love the way Zoe talks about it from the article:
If you sync to your banshee and you’re syncing to a tree, why not sync into a person? I almost feel like you’ll have the most amazing orgasm, I guess [laughter]. It was a very funny scene to shoot because there were so many technical things that sometimes you have to keep in mind that paying attention to all those might disrupt the fluidity of how a scene is supposed to take place.”

Zoe continued: “And because Jim was shooting for a PG-13 rating, we couldn’t move in certain directions. The motion would look a little too past the PG-13 rating standards. So it was really funny for Sam and me. We had a lot of giggles there.”

That was good stuff, yes,

but Pandora/Neytiri totally blew that away. Not even a competition.
 
You guys are pretty sensitive, no CGI is the "best" persay, but aside from the facial animations and color, it was pretty standard fare.

I didn't say it was terrible.

about this: in the final battle they were shooting at them downward, while flying AT them. Earlier they were shooting upward. Gravity's a bitch.

Apparently it was because the Navi were shooting their arrows from below, so the arrows were slowed down due to gravity.

In the final battle, the Navi shot the arrows while in a fast dive on a banshee, giving the arrows enough kinetic energy due to their increased velocity to breach the reinforced glass.

Also, I'd say it's because they weren't shooting at the little helicopters at first (at least I thought), it was the colonel's big fat gunship thing, whereas later on it's the smaller ones that are shot at.

I never felt like the movie even approached the weirdness of the uncanny valley, at all.

I can try and explain this one. In regards to the bulldozers destroying the Tree of Voices, that wasn't a "target" of theirs, it was just an obstruction on their way to the hometree. It's easy to miss, but when Parker and Quaritch tell Sam he has three months, it's added that that's when the bulldozers will reach the Na'vi's area. Quaritch's final goal of trying to destroy the Tree of Souls was brought about because Jake began gathering the clans and he predicted if their numbers kept increasing then they'd be able to assault Hells Gate.

I'm sure it'd take a lot of people by surprise considering how close the Na'vi are to humans in many ways. It's admitted by Cameron himself that the likelihood of an alien race being bipedal and such is just not real. So the Na'vi are pretty much where the "fantasy" in this Science Fantasy film resides.

One plausible explanation was that they were firing upwards from the ground, and they also had to contend with the wind from all the combined propellers bearing downwards at them, so the arrows lacked the force and speed when fired from above. Also, at least from what we were shown, they were mainly targeting Quaritch's Dragon, which probably had the most reinforced windows of all the ships.

Pretty much. Firing at the Dragon from the ground some distance away versus firing point blank into the cockpit of a helicopter. But same thing, gravity and all that.

they were also much much closer.. since they were flying right next to them, instead of shooting from the ground.
 
The arrows in the final scene seemed to have been strengthened, but yeah, the force of air and gravity added to their puncturing ability, too.

Pictures from certain moments like posted above look dead on, and then there are other times where I cannot put into words what looks off.
