Covers everything from the Na'vi having to use Octal arithmetic, to their flutes, looms, hammocks, bows, as well as all the animals and plants (not all seen in the movie). There is even a list of translated Na'vi -> English words at the end (several pages worth).
Saw it a 2nd time tonight. Liked it better than the first time even, it's just really immersive. RealD was way fucking impressive too. I saw it Imax originally, and looking outside of where your focus was intended really caused strain on the eyes. The image was huge, yet not as sharp as RealD. I felt fine looking wherever I wanted on screen here, which is great since it's such a gorgeous film. It was just really impressive, though unfortunately the sound in comparison to Imax was just poo. Actually, the size of the screen in Imax does help throw you into the frame a little better as well. I guess ideally would be Imax sound, RealD picture, and Imax size or somewhere between the two - but I'm glad I saw it in both.
I enjoyed the story a lot this time around, it's really well paced and can only use some extra time in a couple places. I'm surprised how effective the scenes of first exploring Pandora were on 2nd watch. I didn't expect it to entertain and hold awe so much on seeing it again, but there's a level of immersion it works on that is really amazing. I just love the taste put into the visuals, and the CG in general. The action is hard hitting, more than I thought prior as well. You really get a sense of the destruction, and that it's quickly taking its toll on everyone, as long as it continues. The action is just really kick ass compared to the average blockbuster. Just gorgeously directed and choreographed, as the whole film is.
I saw it with a lot of family, 10pm monday night. The theater is still getting packed at that hour on a Monday. I went with my Aunt, 2 cousins, Mom, Dad, and sister. The only ones who didn't seem to love it was my sister and her similarly aged cousin (19). They giggled a lot at the Na'vi and Neytiri. Mostly how wild and native-like she was, and the people. The love scene too got some laughs. But my Aunt, Mom, Dad, and younger cousin (12 year old boy) loved it. My Mom and Aunt got audibly nervous/tense during the final battle. They all came out glowing, saying out loud they've never seen anything like that.

8K should do the trick. It will take quite a bit of R&D before a high enough quality projector at that resolution can be released, so hopefully they're willing to spend the money.
NHK demonstrated a prototype 8K resolution projector last year.
The idea of watching 3D films with the sharpness and clarity of RealD on an IMAX-sized screen at 48-60fps is mind-fucking.

This confirms that no matter how well done, I hate 3D movies. Oh well.
Liked about more than half of the movie. Bit too heavy handed and cheesy towards the end.
No urge to go see it again, but might might netflix it when it's out on DVD.

Just saw this movie and man was I disappointed. Story was extremely generic, which is fine if you have interesting characters, good acting ect. but I feel that the movie lacked all of those with the exception of Sigourney Weaver. And despite the movie being 3 hours long, it did not do a very good job of explaining itself. Did they explain how the Avatar process worked?? How did they transfer their minds and then control them remotely? Many of the events or plot points did not seem to make sense in the context of the universe. It seems like they just threw a bunch of random shit into it with no plan whatsoever. Floating mountains??? sure. Nerves wrapped in a ponytail?? why not. Also many of the creature designs seemed to follow the pattern of "lets take an earth animal and throw an extra pair of legs or eyes on them". I need to watch it in 2d. The 3d seemed extremely blurry still and made it hard for me to discern what the hell was going on half the time.

All that IMAX talk makes me sad :/ I live in stone age Germany and even though we have over a dozen IMAX screens, only one shows movies instead of IMAX documentaries D:
At least it seems like the cinemas around here have installed 4k RealD projectors for 3D movies, so I´ll see Avatar early next year in 3D, now that my left eye is working again. Huzzah!

I live in eastern Germany and I can say that those dozens of Imax theatres are probably in the western part of our country. :lol RealD was awesome, though!

I do have something like Pandora withdrawal syndrom, to add to that discussion. I had a lot of "aaaw" moments in the movie. Those rotating insects, the mimosa like plants, Pandora at night, so good.
Probably wouldn´t be the case if Cameron had showed the djungle as deadly as it was supposed to be. That reminds me, had they gone with the "no plants on earth" idea, that´d explain quite a bit of it´s deadliness. Drop a few city kids in a rainforest and watch them die from infections or touching poisonous plants :lol
I just came back from the theater, and right now i feel like this was my best cinema experience of the decade. I walked in with pretty low expectations, and was completely blown away. I didn't care much for the trailer, and even though i followed Avatars progress from time to time over the last years, i never got the feeling that this movie would be a great sucess. I even had a couple of good laughs when i read the OT thread about Avatar. I thought that no movie could possibly live up to that amount of hype, and like many others i believed the project would fail financially. Now i know that i never should have questioned Camerons ability to create an immersive experience. Avatar is the first 3d movie i have seen in theaters, and the technology was really impressive. The scenes that impressed me the most was the nighttime scenes, and the scenes from the control room. The computer interference was amazing in 3D, and anything made of glass was almost unreal. The next movie i watch in 3d have a lot to live up to, because Avatar was unique despite its flaws.

Our local cinema is booked out for almost every evening showing in the next few days. Only a few single seats left. I've never seen that. :O Even when the new StarWars or LotR films came out there weren't too many people in the cinema.
Dunno if this was posted before but here's an about 22 mins interview with Joe Letteri from Weta Digital. I'm just watching the 1st part and I like how the interviewer mentions my favorite scene (
) near the beginning as the perfect example of a CG character coming off as completely real in both look and emotion display.
