Just came back from a viewing. Not sure really what I think of it yet. The beginning was riddled with cliches and some awkward stuff but oboy. The last hour of the movie more than made up for it. The movie surely brings nothing new to the table but what it brings is so delicious I'll eat it up faster than Sally Struthers can eat dingdongs.

All in all a mind blowing experience. The sad thing is. I don't care for buying/seeing it on blu-ray. What would be the point. It can't replicate this experience.

I'm certainly buying the 3D version ... and will be replicating the experience at home

Finally got a chance to see Avatar in IMAX today, pretty much every showing for the last week and a half has been sold out. However, the picture didn't fill the entire IMAX screen, and the theater I went to is "true IMAX". Should I complain later today or is that how it's supposed to be (I can't imagine that being so but you never know)? The movie was good, but I couldn't stop thinking about the picture not filling the screen.

The movie isn't using Imax film.

I've seen this happen so many times; someone makes an awesome movie that earns boatloads of money and just because of that, they make a sequel and it turns out just awful.

Actually that makes sense. Fox releases the 2D DVD/Bluray but continues showing the 3D movie in cinemas until whenever.

That would be my guess. The 3-D BD re-releases isn't expected until late 2010 (and could slip into early 2011), but even then, it's not like all that many people will be ready to use 3-D at home.

I wouldn't be surprised if Avatar has a 3-D only reshowing at theaters next holiday season :lol Hey why not, turn it into a yearly event (well, until part 2 hits).

In Lord of the Rings, when there's suddenly horses coming over the hills or whatever, you're like 'Yeah! awesome!', and there, those beasts come out of the jungle and I'm like 'oh of course they had to turn up some time.'

Finally got an IMAX showing.

Yeah, IMAX > Real-D 3-D. If the 3-D tech was slightly inferior, it was barely noticeable, and the sheer size of the screen more than made up for it.

I couldn't help but feel slightly bittersweet the entire movie, though. When will I ever again get to watch Avatar in such a viewing environment? Maybe in a few years I'll get the 3-D, but not on a screen like that. Sadness. = (

i have to say, it looked way better than watching the trailer on my laptop. in nine ouf ten instances it looked very convincing, but there were some ehh parts--weaver's avatar was the only one, really, that always looked undeniably cg. i'm not sure what went wrong there.

it's both the facial animations and the lighting conditions that make it look cartoony.

that part didn't look cartoony at all in imax 3d. awesome.

zoe saldana was the highlight, personally speaking. terrific, convincing performance.

btw, at some point into the movie, you can totally hear worthington's australian accent. :lol

(Note these movies were not the same top 5 on New Year's Eve. I was just looking at how these specific movies held up. Also, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve were on Wednesday, which is a pretty good comparison to this year, I think.)

I think you meant "only in 3D"... 2D theaters can keep playing it whenever, but due to the (comparatively) limited number of 3D screens, it's losing most of them at the start of March, no matter what. Of course, given what it'll have made by then, I'm sure nobody at Fox will be shedding any tears.

That's my theory. I also thought she stood out as looking less convincing than everyone else, but on second viewing I think it's because she looked too human.

The Na'vi walk that line pretty well; I'd love to see some of the early development tests and see how they tweaked them to get the balance of looking close enough to the actor to be recognizable, but not in the uncanny valley.

One thing I've noticed is how in all the Na'vi, they left the lower part of the face identical to the actor. In the shot of Neytiri looking out from behind the tree Bud posted, cover up everything from the start of her nose up; the lips, jaw and chin are 100% Zoe. Now cover up the lower part, and she looks quite alien. I suspect that was to help make the motion capture of the speech and facial expressions translate 1:1.

With Weaver's avatar, they made the entire face look like her, and it stood out more. But from a visual fidelity perspective, I though it was just as good as everything else.

Out of curiosity, I looked at the top 5 movies from Christmas Eve 2009 and compared the daily grosses of those 5 movies for Christmas Eve vs. New Year's Eve. (Note these movies were not the same top 5 on New Year's Eve. I was just looking at how these specific movies held up. Also, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve were on Wednesday, which is a pretty good comparison to this year, I think.)

I don't really think the action parts were good but the whole accepting him. His speech was pretty touching at parts. Don't get me started on the Mech with a knife. Jesus!

I thought the absolute worst CG in the film was the fifteen-second scene where avatar Jake first encounters avatar Grace, and she tosses him a purple fruit. I still don't understand why her nose is human. Pandorapedia doesn't mention it, though it could easily be explained.

Jake is excited by having legs again.

Grace loves being a hottie again.

Cameron rewrites Genesis so that it is okay to be smart and sexy.

Personally, I think the screen in IMAX is too big. If you get stuck up in front, it is even worse.

I would stick to realD. Imo.

It was mentioned that she had been closer to the tribe before, and had a school going teaching them English. The allusion to using machine guns on them is what I assumed got her booted out.

As for her face, I think it could be because she would have been one of, if not the, first human to test the program (as the head of it), so her mix might have been more human and less Na'vi compared to the others.
