They have added domestic, but not international from yesterday. They also show about $12m less international box office than Variety and Deadline Hollywood are reporting.

They usually update international grosses in the next few hours.

The dimmer picture isn't a 'gimmick', and not something they want. It simply the reality of the technology right now.

I have not posted in this thread yet though, and I guess now would be a great time to say that I loved every minute of it! I went into the theatre expecting little, and came out blown away. It was the best theatrical experience I have been to since LOTR or the Lion King when I was a young kid. It made me feel like a 10 year old again.


In terms of word of mouth, I hear people talking about this all the time! a 34 year old mother of 3 at work was telling me how her girlfriends are all so excited about the movie, and how much she liked it. Heck, my cynical sister saw it twice, and will probably see it again. My dad loved it too.

Yeah those 12 should make up for the difference.

Btw I finished the game yesterday and boy could it have used quite a few more months of development.

Still, between the info on the game's and the online wiki's Pandorapedia, the depth of information and world-building is staggering. Seems like the only thing preventing us from achieving most of the tech on display (well, except the actual Avatar tech) is the energy source, because we have detailed specs for the rest. :lol

How weird, my bro, who at first I thought enjoyed the movie, seems to have reversed his opinion. Now, he's pretty much against the film except for the visuals (and Quaritch). The funny thing is though, his biggest complaint was Jake, and how, in his interpretation, he came off as a big jerk/douche/prick/etc. That was kind of interesting to me because I have not heard that complaint about Jake at all, the main complaint being that his character was a vacuum devoid of much personality. His next big complaint was the awful preachiness of the film's message. I guess he had hoped for more of a True Lies kind of script in terms of writing.

Funny because he's a big District 9 fan, and because Wikus was probably the most definitive douchebag main character ever.

Ah yes, so the child is mature enough to handle all the killing and violence that was in that movie, but not mature enough for a very short and brief matting scene.

Awesome movie btw.

Also, Big Fish is better than Return of the King which is better than Fellowship of the Ring and Munich? This is why I don't bother reading other people's lists.

Thats awesome. I am still trying to convince my dad to go. He's loved all of James Cameron's movies but he thinks this one looks cartoony. A lot of people thought this from the initial trailers and I think a lot of people are surprised when they actually see it, hence the strong word of mouth.

Yup. I was wondering the other day how many people were going to walk out of Avatar and not realize they'd just seen a mostly animated movie. I'm guessing quite a few.

My family is out of town tonight, and I'm starting to get bored. Might up and head to the next showing in a bit. Would be in Dolby 3D, but the closest RealD theater is an hour away (which is where I saw it before). So at least I'll be able to compare the projection tech.

that part didn't look cartoony at all in imax 3d. awesome.

zoe saldana was the highlight, personally speaking. terrific, convincing performance.

btw, at some point into the movie, you can totally hear worthington's australian accent. :lol

Yes I loove that night scene when they first met, personally for me, I think Jake, and Neytiri's character's looked the best through out the film. I seen nothing resembling cartoony!
I know they used 3D in a new why for this film, but how did they get the CGI to look sooo real, what did they do different from other films!???Also definitely agree, on Zoe, I reeeally hope she gets at least an Oscar nom!

I was originally planning to see it again on Saturday after I head into town for a shopping run. I might keep those plans too, we'll see.

there was a preview for the new depp movie directed by burton and the 3d was so in your face and really gimmicky: ''oh, look, he's standing in front of him! ooooooooh.'' the 3d in avatar was more subtle.
 
I have seen it 3 times and will be seeing it a 4th tomorrow and I realized that I am still just as excited to see it as I was the first time. Cameron has created a movie that has a lot of replay value regardless of the familiar story. I just have such a fun experience with this movie and the way he executes it.

I was always curious why Grace's avatar looked so different from the others. Her nose is undeniably thinner; her eyes seem smaller, as do her ears.

Am I crazy, here?

The 3D in Avatar was used mostly to accomplish a sense of depth, wasn't none of that IN YOUR FACE 3D typical gimmick.

Fictional explanation: she was the first successful avatar, and had a higher mix of human DNA compared to the later ones.

Director's explanation: Weaver's nose and upper face were so distinctive that when they "avatar'd" her, she didn't look anything like herself. So they scaled it back to make her recognizable.

Yeah, it was more about creating depth into the screen, not out of it. I can only think of a handful of instances where stuff was really pushed out into the audience.

The Alice trailer looked like the 3D was going to be repeatedly used in the most gimmicky ways possible.

As mentioned before, the glasses and windows looks so fucking great in Avatar/3D
 
The depth they were able to create with the 3D is what 3D movies from this point on need to use. Watching the Alice in Wonderland and Shrek trailers after seeing Avatar the first time were just typical boring ass in your face 3D. I don't want that anymore (dont know if I ever did) after seeing this movie. I hope most major action movies take lessons from Cameron, Weta, ILM, everyone involved in doing this.

Who woulda thunk it? Adding Wednesday's estimated North American gross of $18.4M, Avatar's new domestic cume is now a staggering $268.8M after only 13 days in release. It's been averaging $18M a day. Overall, today's box office should be very good and tomorrow should be huge. Saturday and Sunday will then look normal. With 20th Century Fox conservatively anticipating this weekend's number in the $50M neighborhood, James Cameron's big budget technopic will be the #2 grossing film for 2009. "And there's a whole lot of gross still to come in 2010. This rocket ship still has loads of fuel in its tanks!" a Fox exec reminds me. Even rival studios tell me they expect Avatar to hit $335M by end of Sunday. "Cameron looks like he'll rank #1-#2 with Titanic," a Fox competitor emailed.

Avatar's international for Wednesday was $36.9M, down only 6% from Tuesday, making the foreign cume now $525.3M. So the worldwide total ending Wednesday was $794.1M. It has now crossed $800M today. Yowza!

So it's no wonder that, with today being the last box office opportunity of 2009, this final week will post record numbers with nearly $500 million in revenue generated from December 25 through December 31. Overall, 2009 is looking at $10.6 billion box office, up 10.07% from 2008. Hollywood numbers guru Paul Dergarabedian is also reporting that attendance figures are the highest in the past 5 years at 1.42 billion tickets sold at an average price of $7.46.

Just got back from Avatar, packed house in there lol. Its amazing how many people are still going to see this movie! I thought it was GREAT. Totally blew away my expectations.
 
Brought my mother to see the movie earlier today and she absolutely loved it, despite her not usually being a Sci-Fi/Fantasy person.

Was funny to see how many times she was gasping during the film due to the scenery and spectacle. :lol

Was a sold out show as well.
