I'd be curious to read up on the costs. Though digital projectors are pricey, I wouldn't be surprised if the screens cost nearly as much. This tech would still require the screen.

Cool tech though.
You can read about Technicolor's 3D on Film process HERE.

Just saw it (in 3D). Watched Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze last night.

Liked Turtles better. Avatar put me to sleep almost immediately as the entire plot spread predictably before me in minute 5 of 150. At least Turtles blew my mind with some Vanilla Ice.

Not here to get in an argument though. Just tossing in my two cents for the record. Ya'll can go back to your lovefest now.

Hey, dude, this is no cartoon.

I've come to the conclusion that I don't care for Joel Moore's performance in this film. I really hate his YES! when he hears they're going up to the Hallelujah mountains.

For it to be a DM-esque post, you need to reverse the order of the pics.

Nah, man. First he looks serious because he is giving the impression that his statement is genuine. Then he starts laughing when he drops the bomba :lol

I saw it more of:

1. I'm pretending to be jovial at your "accomplishment" until
2. I'm all business as I deliver a crushing blow of reality.

Saw it for the third time tonight. I sat up pretty close to the screen this time, and I actually found I liked that better in some ways. The 3D effect is a bit more strong when the screen is so close :o

Anyone see this first on Imax and then on a regular screen?

Wanted to go for the second time tonight but my Imax is sold out, thinking bout going to the regular screen(digital 3D).... will it be a letdown?

probable favorite movie ever btw...

Yes it's a letdown. You won't be able to feel explosions and giant things falling through your entire body.

All of his performances are pretty much the same.

By the way, Sculli, how many times have you seen the film?

Just found a new behind the scenes video that shows Cameron directing the actors as well as some more stuff that was cut out of the film.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OjloXVNEbo

Halfway through.

Edit - fucking awesome! You also see the WETA guys showing Cameron the props and weapons they've come up with for him and see Cameron unloading some shots at the end of it.
Stuff like this makes it even more clear they were doing extensive documentary work throughout the production, and raises my hopes that we'll get a really meaty doc out of it, either in the regular or extended editions. Something on the scale of the ones on the extended LotR sets would be very nice.

I tried to see Avatar today in RealD. I say tried because upon getting to the theater an hour and ten minutes before showtime, I find the parking lot more full than I have ever seen it, and end up parking nearly a block away. Upon getting to the ticket booth, I see that the 3D version is sold out, and hear one of the tellers mention to someone that the 2D one was "nearly full"; I think she was asking of she should buy a ticket for some one coming later or have them buy their own.

On the way home (it's a 45 minute drive to the theater, one way) I pass the Dolby 3D theater in the town near me; their parking lot was completely full and had spilled into the strip mall lot next door, filling it.

I'll hit a matinee tomorrow.

Between the $25.2m from Friday and my failed attempt at seeing it, this weekend's box office won't drop much, if at all, from last week. Just crazy.

Totally. That felt so out of place and lame. You would think Sigourney would look at James Cameron and say, " Are you kidding me with this kid? ".

The only bit with him I really hate is when he says, "Who's Eywa? Only their DAY-iety!"

i thought weaver's performance was atrocious. the only scene i thought was really, really bad was was with her: the one where she came out of that thing and asked for a cigarette. ugh. zoe's performance was great, lang's was alright and the rest was forgettable.

Okay I have to ask, is it me or is surround sound overrated? I don't have a home theater setup at uh...home, but everytime I go to the movies I come away unimpressed by the surround-ness. I thought it was just my regular theater of choice...but I watched Avatar on three different cinemas and again the sound did little for me in terms of channel separation. Only time I actually noticed was an obvious sound of a bug flying around.

Surround sound is NOT overrated - Avatar just didn't do much with it.

Not, its not overrated. Most theatres seem to have shitty setups though, so you dont ever get a great experience. My 7.1 setup at home is amazing.

What was the estimate for today?
Not out yet. Deadline Hollywood might have something up in a few hours, if yesterday's update is any indication.

I'm predicting flat to up slightly compared to yesterday, but the conventional wisdom over in the BOM forums is down quite a bit from yesterday (they're on crack).

A good home theater setup in 5.1 with good speakers and (I)set up properly(/I) blows away theater "surround sound".

These are mastered with distinct channels while a typical theater has 7-10 speakers on each side of the theater. I don't know many theaters that have distinct center channels either (save for IMAX)

just got back......WOW..fantastic. Even after all the hype, my expectations were blown away. I saw in Imax 3D..and the picture was crisp and the sound unreal. Fantastic time, this is why I go to the movies. James Cameron has just raised the bar..again.

seeing this in IMAX 3D on Thursday. Going to be a fun day. :)

No way man. Her entire performance was great. Loved Sigourney.

The only performance I didn't like initially was Norm's and I've since warmed up to him considerably. I think the acting ranges from decent (Norm, Trudy) to superb (Grace, Jake, Neytiri).

I like how Cameron explained the scene to Lang when Quatrich kill Neytiri's beast.

I don't think there was any bad acting..maybe a few bits of bad dialog, but overall I think all the actors did pretty good with the material..especially considering how much of it was CGI.

so may amazing moment..its hard to pick a favorite scene..there were so many.

Stupidest shit I've ever read. If you fall asleep to any movie almost immediately it's your problem and not the film's. I cannot stand it when people say this as though their life is so crazy and wacky that anything that doesn't live up to their insane lifestyle puts them to sleep instantly.

AVATAR has a predictable script, some cheesy dialogue and Jake Sully made me cringe more than once due to being a stereotypical obnoxious moron (mostly in the first half)...

...But fuck if it wasn't the greatest cinema experience I've ever had the chance to enjoy. The world of Pandora was beautifully crafted, and the 3D completely engrossed me in that world. I really, really loved it. First movie I'm planning to watch more than once in the theater.

Especially when the opening 10 - 15 mins of the film is some of the most masterfully directed sci-fi put to screen.
And would be even better with the Earth scenes :(

Speaking of which I thought of a reason as to why Cameron may have cut the Earth scenes (aside from time). Maybe he cut it due to being too similar to the beginning earth scene in Star Trek? Jake gets in a fight in a bar, gets recruited there, etc, pretty much the same scenario as in Star Trek

That's why I called him on his bullshit. "I'll name drop Secret of the Ooze, hurr hurr hurr."

5 minutes into the film, Jake's coming out of hypersleep...the plot hadn't been revealed yet.

But our poster was asleep by minute #6.

I doubt it would have been anything close in terms of tone to Star Trek. The opening on Earth always felt like it was just showing how fucking shitty and horrible Earth is. Unwashed masses shuffling past each other in a dreary grey world.

Opinions and all. Of all the iterations of this story (Dances with Wolves, etc.) think Avatar pulled it off the best. It was to my disappointment that the arc was so familiar. It was to my delight that it was told so well and set in such a rich universe with great characters and performances.
And up 8% from last Friday. 0_o

Perfectly stated. I saw it again in IMAX last night(Which was incredible, though it took my eyes longer to adjust) and that's really how I feel. I know this story has been told before but I feel its never been told this well.

Also can someone link me to the image that was from one of the scenes cut from the movie. I think Jake is holding someone?

i guess i'll have to get me one of them home theater thingymajigs one of these days.

"...now what about you?" Cameron is awesome.

people that are dogging the story dont get it.

OF COURSE its a classic story..that's what makes it timeless. Home many times have they remade a Christmas Carol?

Classic stories of good and evil. man vs nature, or invaders vs natives is all classic framework.

that being said..how many of these cliche flicks feature creatures/world that are completely born out of someones imagination. Despite being an old story, it still feels completely original because of Cameron creations.

As Giolon stated, I don't think the movie really did that much with audio anyway.

That said, it can be hard to tell. In general, a well configured home theater pretty much destroys a movie theater for several reasons ... the main being, it's simply too large of a room to get adequate imaging and sound steering.

Probably the best theater to go to are IMAX in that regard. They generally are smaller (in terms of the footprint), and have much better spec'ed equipment. Even then though, my home theater kicks it in the nuts as far as soundfield coherence.

Here you go Sculli.

Just have a scene where Jake is telling Neytiri about the world he comes from:

Then show stock footage of Reese walking through the Bunker with little kids watching fires inside old TVs.

We zoom in on the fire and the fire becomes Jake's eye as he concludes.
