Plot quibbles aside, the one thing that really stood out was the sense of height. I'm an adrenaline junkie and I've never felt that rush from watching a movie but this one did it. I looked forward to every flight scene.

Just found a new behind the scenes video that shows Cameron directing the actors as well as some more stuff that was cut out of the film.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OjloXVNEbo

Halfway through.

Edit - fucking awesome! You also see the WETA guys showing Cameron the props and weapons they've come up with for him and see Cameron unloading some shots at the end of it.

Check out the blue jacket Cameron is wearing. Guy thinks he's some sort of Na'vi.

Michelle Rodriguez pissed me off in practically every single scene she was in, playing the typical "tough as nails no bullshit girl power" stereotype that she's played in every role she's ever been in. And she acted terribly in it.
I've never agreed with anything so strongly :lol
It's so satisfying when she gets blown up.

I need to go back to Pandora. It's my drug...

I believe this is heresy.

Lawrence of Arabia is really fucking boring and really really historically inaccurate.

Removing Lawrence's knowledge of the Sykkes-Picot agreement essentially removes the entire point of what T.E. Lawrence was doing.

Bleh.

Stupidest shit I've ever read. If you fall asleep to any movie almost immediately it's your problem and not the film's. I cannot stand it when people say this as though their life is so crazy and wacky that anything that doesn't live up to their insane lifestyle puts them to sleep instantly.
And the so-called predictable plot wasn't any secret to begin with. Anyone who watched the trailer or read a synopsis knows exactly what was gonna happen. So saying "oh I worked it out within minute 5 of 150" just makes you sound like a blatant troll or really dumb since most people worked it out before going in to watch.

I even discussed this point with a friend outside the cinema prior to seeing it the first time, that they seemed to have intentionally revealed the plot in the trailer already and there wasn't many ways it could be different from what people would've worked out for themselves.

I finally saw the movie today, and liked it well enough, but it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. Decent all around film. The effects were, at times, amazing, and at others they just seemed average. Story was basic and to the point. Nothing terrible, but nothing too challenging either. There were some fun elements and some very cliched ones, but all in all, it was a decent film.

I'm surprised there's so much Rodriguez hate. Didn't even think she was on screen enough for any emotional reaction.

Scullibundo said:
I can't agree with that. The best is Lawrence of Arabia.
That's an insult to Lawrence of Arabia.

Sure, the Dances with Wolves template borrows (read: plagiarize) heavily from that movie, but the reason why it's generally looked down upon is its simplicity and condescending toward the savages, neither of those exist in David Lean's masterpiece.

Great movie, I own it. Prefer Avatar. :p

You know what saddens me?
That had someone wrote that the effects on one of the cat-people tail looked like a CGI we would have 7 pages of people piling on him and calling you a troll, yet one can badmouth one of the greatest films in history with impunity.

i'm half joking.

I was talking specifically of the protagonists' changing of sides arc. To me, nothing beats the scene where Lawrence goes back to get the man fallen behind.

Especially when she has always been that same type of character in ALL of her films.

When I originally heard that she was cast in the film, I remember thinking, I guess Cameron is still in love with the Vasquez character.

TBH, I think Trudy was a cross between Vasquez and Ferro.

Scullibundo said:
People who think Trudy is anything like Vasquez haven't seen Aliens in a very long time.

I've seen Aliens several times and yes, there ARE similarities even though they aren't 1:1.

Like I said, Trudy is a Vasquez / Ferro hybrid IMO.

I kept thinking she had been stuck in a cryogenic chamber for 150 years and would soon start yelling "Yo, Dom!!"

Since I'm not searching through this entire thread, did anyone else see a shit load of Panzer Dragoon in this movie?
Were you to do a search on the thread, yup, you would find Panzer Dragoon mentioned many times.

This movie actually made me think Michelle Rodriguez is cute. It's probably because it's the first time I've ever seen her smile and be genuine rather than just be a bitch and grit her teeth.

Trudy is absolutely nothing like Vasquez.

To be honest Trudy has so few lines of dialogue in the movie she's barely worth talking about.

Well, she's the only likable Michelle Rodriguez character in history, so that's something.

I had the exact same feeling and I totally despised her on Lost.

And yet I liked Trudy more than Vasquez. Vas is just far too abrasive to me.

Vasquez is a badass.

Trudy is a nobody, seriously she's a non-character. Maybe the extended edition will flesh her out more, but right now, like I said, not even worth mentioning. It's like talking about Norm. Who cares.

Or this guy.

The only thing I'll say about the plot is that while I knew the outline in advance, and have seen it before, that's also true of 95% of the movies out there. Most movies simply bore me these days. What matters is if the movie tells the story in a way that makes me care, and goes about it in an interesting way. Maybe show me something new along the way.

With Avatar I thought the story was compelling from beginning to end, and while the story arc was unsurprising, it was filled with moments and details that did surprise me. And with each viewing, I find myself appreciating the detail and intelligence that went into the entire affair; most of Cameron's movies reward repeat viewings and I'm finding that to be the case even more so with Avatar. And every few minutes, it shows me stuff I'd never seen before.

That goes a long ways with me.

They were both nobodies: pre-destined canon fodder. One was just more established than the other. We'll see how much more fleshed out Trudy is in the extended cut.

As far as likability goes, Trudy wins.

Watch more (or different) movies.

Edit: Why am I popping in to rain on the lovefest? I actually enjoyed the movie.

You shut your goddamn mouth. Vasquez was a great character and easily outdoes Trudy. Trudy is more likable only in the sense that you wouldn't want to be stuck in a room with Vasquez for 24 hours.

I just need to know one thing: Where. they. are.

Thanks for reinforcing my point. I'd rather keep company with a horny thanator for 24 hours than Vas. :P

You're not the only one with a gun, bitch.

Just saw that Avatar became the 3rd fastest film to hit 300m. Outside of ROTK, I think all of the others in the top 10 opened over 100m in their first weekend. Incredible.

man pandorapedia.com still hasn't fully recovered. they should just lock that shit, i don't understand the point of making it public.

Wow, watching those 2D featurettes makes me think i wont have problems with no 3D in the blu ray release. If anything, it felt like i saw more detail and subtle stuff than in my 2 3D viewings.

Yeah, its an official site, so why are they letting people mess with it?

Doesnt make sense.

Has anyone heard about a deleted scene or something that explains why Trudy didn't get into a bunch of trouble for not firing on hometree?

No, but I wouldnt be surprised if Cameron shot a little something addressing that

she was probably just grounded from flight or something.

In terms of non-U.S. gross, Avatar is now beyond The Dark Knight at $476M vs. $468M. I actually think that makes some sense, since I know a lot of non-Americans don't see DC superheroes in the same light that Americans do. Avatar seems to hit at a larger crowd overall.

She probably did (notice how she was wondering whether or not her aircraft would still work, not having authorized clearance to leave, seemingly working as a janitor) but, like most of her character development, it was cut.

I thought it would have been better to just show her deciding not to fire, but staying in the firing line.
