Saw it for a 5th time tonight. 10:35pm show, and the line was wrapped around the theater 45 mins before.

Avatar has now entered 'phenomenon' status.

So, I thought it was kind of lame how Trudy didn't get to do much in the last battle scene. She basically appeared out of nowhere, shot a couple of rounds at Quaritch, and then gets blown up. That's no way for a major supporting character like her to go down! She should have shot up a couple of other ships or at least assisted Jake in taking down the dragon before she died.

Yeah. I feel the same way. Her character development and finale were very disappointing. She could have been a great character, too. Maybe we'll get something in an extended cut.

Jake: "Do we even stand a chance against this new threat?"

Biehn Na'vi: "I dunno...with these weapons..."

Arnold Na'vi: "We move. 5 meter spread, no sound."

I like how Stallone is left out of this group of badasses.

PS: I´d take anything added as an excuse to re-watch Avatar or buy a super special CE, you hear me, Cameron? I need my fix :/

I pray to Eywa for a bitchin extended cut every day.

Also I think some of the character development problems came there being too many close supporting characters. You had the humans on one side (Grace, Norm, Trudy,...Max wasn't too important, and then Quaritch and Selfridge), and then on the Na'vi side you had Neytiri, Tsu'tey, and Moat to an extent, am I missing anyone?). Then, of course, you have Jake. Look at that! That's a lot of characters to share screen time with, so it's hard to really build them all up in 2hr 40min.

Anyone want to learn to speak Na'vi? Then head to http://www.learnnavi.org. The language is rather basic, the grammar is mapped out but it has only a 500 word vocabulary (with 500 additional words coming soon). I was astounded to see how many people have posted on the Learnnavi-forum. You can find Youtube clips of people speaking Na'vi phrases.

Here you go Sculli.

Just have a scene where Jake is telling Neytiri about the world he comes from:

Then show stock footage of Reese walking through the Bunker with little kids watching fires inside old TVs.

We zoom in on the fire and the fire becomes Jake's eye as he concludes.

Tell me of your homeworld, Usul...

Avatar's numbers keep tracking upward. If it does do over $70 million this weekend, consider me officially awed, because it would mean a relatively small Sunday drop and would point to great nonholiday holds.

Ha! One week ago I bet on Avatar crossing $1B by this weekend. If it's confirmed (waiting for 'mojo) I'll setup a website and start predicting this stuff for money. GAFers get a newsletter subscription discount!!

Anyway, bets are on for $2B. I'll give it 3 more weeks. I'm a conservative at heart. :lol

If we put into consideration that Avatar will be far beyond 1B$ before it starts to drastically slowdown compared to actual revenues and that it will have decent legs because of multiple factors that favors this movie, I say and stand behind the prediction that it will pass Titanic.

I really hope it does. Even though it's not my favourite film ever, and seeing as LOTR collectively is the biggest thing ever, it would be great to see Avatar top Titanic. It deserves it, and the crow .. well there would be no birds left in the sky

How are you guys getting 1b?

Domestic: $309,011,000 39.4%
+ Foreign: $476,192,825 60.6%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

= Worldwide: $785,203,825

That's still $215 million away.

Your numbers are very outdated. They only include the Friday domestic estimate, and none of the overseas weekend numbers. Just wait until 6-7 hours from now when the weekend estimates come out, and you'll see.

Looks like Avatar have some political resonance in Hong Kong. A bit far fetched, sounds like something young HKers would do

What do Tsoi Yuen villagers have in common with 3 metre blue aliens?

Villagers being forced from their homes to make way for a rail link have come up with an unusual source of inspiration: the tall, blue, tree-dwelling aliens in the blockbuster Avatar who battle invading earthlings.

Tsoi Yuen villagers who have been told they must leave their homes to make way for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link saw the movie yesterday at the invitation of a group of young people who have taken up their cause.

The Post 80s Anti-Express Railway Group invited a dozen villagers to watch Avatar at the UA Times Square cinema because they saw similarities between their plight and that of the Na'vi in James Cameron's 3-D blockbuster who are forced from their homes on an imaginary planet because it sits atop a valuable mineral deposit. The government says the rail link must be built for Hong Kong to share in the mainland's economic expansion.

In the film, the Na'vi are rallied with the fiery speech: "They have sent us a message that they can take whatever they want. Well, we will send them a message that this, this is our land!" Those words resonated with one elderly villager who was watching a 3D film for the first time.

"I'm touched by how they protect their homeland," said 81-year-old Wong Kam-fook, referring to the guerilla war the Na'vi wage to fight off the invaders.

The young people who organised the film viewing are linked to the hundreds of young people who formed a circle around the Legislative Council building last month to support the villagers and show their disapproval of the HK$66.9 billion project. Pan-democrats on the Finance Committee later held up approval for funding of the project, delaying the start of work on it.

Dr Law Wing-sang, assistant professor at Lingnan University's department of cultural studies, wrote on Facebook that the movie could help people understand the campaign against the rail link.

"When I saw the big tree destroyed in a few seconds, I cried," said Chimmy Chan Hoi-shan, the daughter of one villager, referring to the "home tree" in which the Na'vi live.

The Tsoi Yuen villagers' fight is not the first cause to have inspired protests by young people in recent years. The demolition of the Star Ferry clock tower in Central to make way for a new road drew hundreds. Ger Choi Tsz-kwan, a member of the group that called the protest yesterday, compared the destruction of the Na'vis' home tree to the government's decision to take down the clock tower.

After watching the film, more than 30 members of the audience held a discussion in the Times Square piazza, at the end of which they shouted in unison, "This is our land".

Tickets to the film, which cost HK$125 each, were paid for by an unnamed benefactor. Villagers were given free tickets.

I think it's missing quite a bit more than just the overseas weekend numbers. Were the mojo overseas numbers updated since wednesday?

The Foreign number is only through Wednesday. BOM updates with Thursday-Sunday all at once. Other sites are reporting it will break it on Sunday.

According to @ERCboxoffice on twitter:

"Avatar is #1 for the third weekend in a row, as it grossed an estimated $68.3 million. Fox's behemoth blockbuster dropped just -10% versus last weekend, and brought its domestic total to $352 million."

Until the last international update on mojo, international BO was about double the american BO (but not quite). If the trend kept up, it should cross $1B today.

$68.3 is a little low, considering how much it made Friday. They keep projecting this to drop slightly over the weekend like a normal movie would, but this...this is Avatar!

Btw, since you guys know more about this than I do. Is there anything available that reads Blu Ray discs that is not a PS3? That crap is ridiculously expensive.

Panasonic has a great player out there for $150. I have a cheap insignia player my wife got for $100 for my birthday last year that has been working great as well.

Keep in mind that time and again PS3 has been, afaik, the only truly upgradeable reader, and it is ready for Blu-ray 3D, it only needs the eventual firmware upgrade.

Is there a gif out there yet of James Cameron bashing the dummy with the folding chair (from the G4 interview)? I feel like we could get a lot of mileage out of such a thing.

Thank you. Unfortunately, the PS3 is too expensive for me. Not sure if it's worth just buying something now or maybe waiting for the PS3 to get a bit cheaper

This gif is pricelss :lol :lol

PS3 won't be any cheaper for a long time. At the absolute earliest next Christmas.

This movie was very disappointing. The 3D was OK, but Ang looked totally different than I was expecting, and Katara didn't use her water bending powers once. Also, it's like they all forget how to use their elemental abilities. What's up with that?!

I will stick to the TV box sets.

Aww, you guys are being hard on Trudy. It's true she didn't have a ton of lines, but it's best not to give Michelle Rodriguez more than she can chew (a tablespoon). That she actually got to help the main characters out before/without getting arrested for drunk driving is a landmark in Michelle's career, and I really liked seeing her in the Na'vi facepaint. It was a nice touch. It was like she was finally part of a team instead of BUCKING IT, BUCKING EVERYBODY because THAT'S WHAT BADASS GIRLS DO.

'Avatar' tops $1 billion at worldwide box office

James Cameron sci-fi pic the fourth highest grosser of all time

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118013236.html

Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron's "Avatar" rang in the New Year with an estimated worldwide cume of $1 billion through Sunday, becoming the fourth highest grosser of all time.

Domestic cume was $352.1 million, including a weekend take of $68.3 million, the best gross ever for a film in its third weekend.

Overseas, the pic's cume through Sunday was $670.2 million.

We´re just that awesome :D

*bow* James Cameron *bow*

But the haircut in the gif is horrible, older men should not try and grow back the longer hair of their early twens :lol But my dad was the same.

I've been trying to force my brother to watch the movie

He won't watch the movie because "I don't like them cgi movies"

I've told him many times this is not cgi but he always says "Yeah it is cgi, it's all the same"

Was I adopted?

Is this the turning point where GAF stops claiming TDK to be the best thing ever and replaces it with Avatar? Because of box office gross?

Just like the NPD wars in the, uhm, other part of GAF.

I liked Avatar soo muchmoreit´s not even funny and I haven´t even had a chance to see it in 3d.
