Heh, yeah, when my copy came in the mail, I went to the human tech section and that was the first entry that caught my interest.
Yeah, for me that answered the big question, well how long is it gonna take for RDA corporate to find out what happened? Well, unless somehow no one was smart enough to send a message once Quaritch's forces were decimated (Selfridge would have been assuredly watching the battle as he watched the hometree destruction), they probably would know.

So at the very least, the RDA can already begin plotting their counterattack immediately and not have to wait for the Venture Star to return. The "tunneling" technology is really cool too, it'd be totally awesome if the Humans could make a breakthrough and to use it like the Combine and just teleport entire structures (like the Citadel) onto Pandora.

But then it'd become a Half Life movie. :(

Jesus. I've never even seen the same movie twice in a theater.

Really? I've done it quite often. All three Star Wars movies, Matrix, Groundhog's Day, Memento, T2 (5 times!) and 12 Monkeys.

Avatar will be the first one I have done it for since Memento.

You're like that girl, Sally, in high school that jumps from boy to boy. Getting with you isn't a milestone at all.

But that girl, Taylor; the one that turned down 6 boys but gave you the green light, now THAT is a milestone.

People who don't even like going to movies, people who only go see a movie once in a theater has come back for multiple viewings.

Those are Taylors, you are Sally.:lol

You know. As a Cameron fan for over 20 years, this just tickles me to no end.

Alternate response: hell yeah, motherfuckers.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread; Im not even a huge Cameron fan. I love his movies, but not enough to "root" for him in any way.

But I come in this thread every day hoping to see more news of it inching closer to Titanic.

Saw it at The Palms' in-house movie theatre tonight. First time. IMAX 3D. Sold out.

I'll be attending tomorrow night's viewing, same time, same screen.

moved to other page. No one reads these bottom posts anyway :(

I think 5th weekend will be more interesting.

Will be funny if it ends up being Gary Whitty who dethrones Avatar from the weekly no. 1 spot.

From Scullibundo to OT:
"Avatar is the second highest grossing movie of all time, in just 20 days. fuck you "

what are people predicting next weekend domestically? I say 50-55M.

I predicted 57.4m on Boxofficemojo. I can see it getting up to 60m though depending on Weds/Thursday drops. The weekends for this movie now that the holidays are over will still be large since people aren't going during the week.

Really is a blast to watch this movie keep going and going. Cameron now has 2/5ths of all billion dollar films and the 2 highest grossing films of all time under his belt. Blank checks incoming from Fox for Avatar 2 and 3.

Forgive me if this has already been posted

After delays forestalled the original opening date, Avatar opened in China on Monday and quickly took in about 33.03m yuan (USD$4.8m) to become the biggest-ever film open in the country’s history. The previous record holder opened just this past December. Zhang Yimou’s A Simple Noodle Story (the director’s loose remake of Blood Simple) took in 21m yuan on December 10.

As when James Cameron’s movie opened in the States and the UK, the film faced highly inclement weather in many major markets, says Variety. High ticket prices (up to 150 yuan / $22 in Beijing) helped the record-breaking take. Reactions to the film so far seem to be in line primarily with those heard around the world: the technology on display overcomes any other shortcomings. Cameron’s Titanic did well in China, too, with a 320m yuan take.
Pirated DVDs have also been selling quickly, says Variety, based on conversations with street vendors.

I still can't get over how awesome the first 10 minutes of Avatar really is. Just straight up amazing.

Damn, Seems like the movie is a total monster in France compared to all the other markets. Isn't the UK traditionally a bigger movie market?

Do we discount some of the movie sales because its in part in IMAX and such or just go with it? Added bonus? It just feels weird that its breaking all these records but IMAX is playing a part in it too. Dunno.

International markets arent littered with IMAX and 3D screens like we are in the US

Similarly, in the US Avatar is playing on considerably less screens than your average big blockbuster (4,400 for TDK, while Avatar opened on only 3,400)

I finally saw it for the first time yesterday (a bit late I know). I was very pleased with the whole film. I had pretty big expectations and I have to say for the most part they were thoroughly met. I thought there were as few drawbacks though

the whole "becoming one with Eywa" and the subsequent chanting scenes were a bit too much for me and I felt some characters weren't as strong as they should be, especially Trudy whose death didn't have any kind of impact at all and Grace, who needed a few more scenes to show she was a hardcore bitch in some ways. She came off as too soft imo

The story was predictable and traditional, which I think is a big part of why the film is so succesful. It's a universal story that clicks with many many people, just like Titanic did, it just has something for everyone: big action and explosions for the lads, a lovestory for the gals, a positive message and just an incredibly well thought-out world in Pandora which seems to speak to older people (my dad was very impressed with the tech and designs and such even if he didn't seem to really care for the story.

It's definitely not my favorite Cameron movie, Aliens still takes the lead by far with T2 not far behind, but it might come in third which is saying a lot about the overall quality of the movie. The special effects are simply beyond anything I've ever seen and the 3d was very impressive as well. I especially liked the simpler scenes, like the Quaritch's speech scene where you really feel like you're in the room with all those people, or the short bit with Quaritch in his mech and you see him looking in his rear-view mirror.

I probably won't see it in theaters again (I just don't go to the theaters that much anymore) but I'm definitely gonna be watching this a lot of times in the coming years right along with the original Star wars movies, LotR, Harry Potter and Indy films which all still get regular viewings.

If anything, Australia is the monster, considering it has at most 1/3rd the population of the 4 above it.

It may seem that way, but Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (2008) crossed ~$200m in France

Apparently Avatar made around $6.9 million domestically yesterday (around what I was predicting, 5-5.5% drop from yesterday) and has now officially surpassed Return of the King for number two grossing movie worldwide of all time. $26 million Wednesday internationally, or about a 4-5% drop from yesterday :lol.

If its legs keep up I'm thinking Titanic's going down overseas and possibly worldwide; domestically, it may be a squeaker. TDK is fucked though.

They should just give the Communist Party leadership to Jim. He pretty much rules the country already.
Apparently the theme of Nav'i being evicted from their homes really strikes a chord with a lot of Chinese people. That and the ridiculous, ridiculous visuals.

I cant get over you mentioning this several times. For me personally, it was probably the weakest part of the movie.

I am reading a news from a Chinese forum. The advance ordering is so through to roof in the few IMAX theaters they are considering raise the IMAX price from 150 to 180 RMB.

In one theater the projector malfunctioned and ran audio out of sync. People almost torn the theater manager to pieces.

:lol :lol :lol

I'd hate to be that manager.

The moment where Jake screams: "Now shut up and fly straight.." followed by the immediate silence. Is indeed great.

I'm going to predict that it's going to have around a -40% drop. So that would put it around $40 Million this weekend domestically.

Speakin of Sculli; what was up with that thread "Official Avatar Discussion without Scullibundo"? Was it a joke?

He was kind of being Nazi about dissenting views pre-launch so a thread was created so that people could discuss it without him going crazy.

I don't think a picture would really matter. The camera just keeps moving, walking down the line for two minutes. He probably walks for a couple of large blocks.
