Thanks Sculli..really enjoying this interview so far.

I love how he explains the way he does 3D and the way it should be done (and to not remind you that you're in a theater). I wish every director thought like him.

Yeah I noted that too.

Avatar may be the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars this year — it’s already been nominated for Golden Globes, Directors Guild, and Producer Guild awards — but director-producer James Cameron isn’t so sure he’d be a welcome sight on the red carpet. “After jumping up and making a fool of myself with my acceptance speech [for Titanic], I’m sure nobody wants to see me at the Academy Awards again,” he says. “Or maybe they want me to win again to see if I can make an even bigger fool of myself.” Even if he doesn’t take home a statue, though, Avatar’s $1.3 billion grosses are already making him feel like King of the World. “Let me put it this way,” he says. “All those naysayers, the nattering nabobs of negativity, the people who were saying the movie looks bad before they’d even seen anything — you have to learn to ignore them. That’s something I learned on Titanic. But yeah, it’s satisfying that I was able to prove them all wrong.”

Proving everyone wrong didn’t come without an insane amount of hard work. Avatar took so many years of dedication that Cameron barely had time for swine flu. “I took a half day off,” he says. “I took a day off about once every seven weeks, when I started slurring my words. I did get frustrated and cranky. But then one day, I just sort of bitch-slapped myself. I told myself, ‘You’re f—ing rich. You don’t have to do this. You could be off doing deep-sea exploration. So you better find a way to love it.’ The next day, I came to work whistling. I was slapping the grips on the back. It lasted till about noon.”

Love the 'lasted till about noon' at the bottom. :lol

JC: "All those naysayers, the nattering nabobs of negativity..."
That is awesome.
JC: "You’re f—ing rich. You don’t have to do this. You could be off doing deep-sea exploration. So you better find a way to love it."
Now that is fucking awesome. :lol :lol

Heh. In that Discovery interview he mentions how if they'd done the Na'vi without CG but instead used prosthetics and makeup it would have looked "boring and stupid, kind of blue actors running around in the rain forests in their underwear".

Hilarious image, and it's also probably what a lot of people thought Avatar was going to look like, for a long time.

You bitches are gonna look real stupid when the subtitles on the bluray prove you wrong.

Who a) gives a fuck about subtitles and b) watches movies in their native tongue with subs on? I dont give a rats ass what the subs may read, she is clearly saying "my Jake". Clean the shit out of your ears, ma'jett.

Before it hit theaters, Avatar, which has amassed $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, seemed to many in Hollywood like a crazy gamble. But not only did director James Cameron always believe that the film would be a hit — he was even planning a sequel during production. “I’ve had a storyline in mind from the start — there are even scenes in Avatar that I kept in because they lead to the sequel,” Cameron says. “It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan. The CG plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters — that all takes an enormous amount of time to create. It’d be a waste not to use it again.
So, what scenes do you guys think he is referring to?

Just came back from my second viewing, this time in 3D IMAX. The experience was much improved upon the 3D one, even though we had side seats.

Preemptively accepting your pwnage, I see.

I didn't really look into the meaning of this post, so I'm just going to assume it conforms to everybody's argument against you.

or

Bout time you admitted you were wrong jett. Glad to see you take your medicine.

BTW solo, kinda funny telling me to wash my ears when you deaf fucks didn't even notice Neytiri says that more than once.

The flyover shot itself? Jake's VO on top of it? Which part, exactly?

Yeah both, since he's been having dreams of flying. And I think in pandorapedia its reported a few people had dreams of flying before coming to Pandora.

Just pointing out the nature of a lot of your argumentative posts. Blanket posts that pretty much say 'I don't want to argue specifics, so I'll just assume that I've won this round.'

I argue plenty in this forum. And there is nothing to argue here. All international prints in multiple languages translate what Neytiri says as Ma'. Period. It's not some crazy subtitler making shit up.

And are you really that dense that you can't understand what I was joking around with Solo? Even if the official subtitles in BD/DVD have it as Ma', he implied he won't give a rat's ass and will still pretend it's "my". :P So I considered that a preemptive acceptance of defeat! :P

Its not defeat, all it takes is one retard in charge of communicating their interpretation of the scene (that is then consequently put as the english subtitle - which is the same and singular english subtitle track that is distributed to all territories) to make a mistake like that. Ma'jake makes no sense.

Correct, it mentions people began having dreams of forests, etc before pandora was found. Leading some (from the book) to think Eywa called out to us and put herself in danger in order to help Mother Earth.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what section of the movie was shown during the 18 minute preview of earlier last year?

I didn't get to go. :(
IIRC

- Part of the Quaritch intro
- Part of Jake taming his Banshee
- When Jake meets Neytiri
- Part of the Thanator chase I think

Theres more, but thats all I can remember

I kind of wish I hadn't gone to see it ever since seeing the movie.

Wow, I'm kinda glad I missed that after all.

Finally saw it-- no surprises at all, but the experience was certainly worth it despite the cliche-as-hell plot. Good acting (apart from the bad guys) as well.

I'm guessing, for a sequel, they could sort of bring back
Sig Weaver, since she says she's with Aywah when she dies, thus they could contact her by tapping into some trees.

I also saw the pseudo American flag during the Quatritch intro. That was a neat subtle effect.

My Avatar issue of Cinefex (#120) that I ordered just arrived today. And WOW was it worth the $12. It's got about 80 pages of material on Avatar along with some great screenshots and photos of the making of showing a few scenes from footage to previs to final. This is going to be a great read.

On another note, I just got back from seeing Avatar for a fifth time. It was still great. I still get emotional towards the end even after all these repeat viewings.

Can't wait for my issue to show up, I used to pick Cinefex up regularly and it was always a fantastic read.

....

Before he makes the sequel, however, Cameron said he might step away from Pandora for a while. "There's some possibility of doing another film in between," explained the filmmaker, who has been absent from the awards-season scene since he similarly blew through it in 1997 with "Titanic." "But we'll certainly get busy talking about what the strategy is [for an 'Avatar' sequel], whether it makes sense to do it and laying any technical groundwork that needs to be done. These are big projects."
http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1629886/story.jhtml

Please be Battle Angel. Please be Battle Angel. Please be Battle Angel.

As for recent speculation over the leaked "Avatar" script that supposedly revealed extended intimacy between the film's lead characters, Cameron said he was getting a kick out of the chatter. "We took a good 10 seconds out of that scene. So people shouldn't [get too worked up over it]," he grinned. "I think it's one of those cases where the fantasy vastly exceeds the reality."

Still, fans can look for that scene — and others — in an upcoming DVD that Cameron is compiling, but one that he stopped short of labeling with a phrase we hear all too often. "The 'director's cut' is what we release," Cameron said. "What we do is we do a special edition, where you could select a longer version of the film that has some scenes reinstated. But it's really more of a fan version than a director's version.

"[The fan version] will be 10 or 12 minutes longer," he revealed. "Something like that."

And in "probably a wildly erronios report" category:

If the "Avatar" sequel does happen, it'll be a few years before audiences can lay their 3D-glasses-enhanced eyes on it. Cameron is currently in pre-production on his next movie, "Battle Angel" in which he'll use some of the same CG technology he created for "Avatar." That film is slated to hit theaters in 2011.

http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/movie-talk-avatar-trilogy.html

2011 is a joke, and no source listed for the pre-production, so I'm guessing they just misunderstood that a year had been put into it already. But with Cameron hinting just today that he may do another movie before Avatar 2, I thought it was worth tossing in.

Cameron was always going to do another film before the AVATAR sequel. I don't trust that as a source that its Battle Angel. But as soon as its announced I'll be there with condoms on.

"Always" is an exaggeration, he's been cagey about it. Of the couple dozen interviews I've seen and read, he's never said one way or the other. If he did in one other interview, I missed it. Though logistically it makes sense, since he has to draft the scripts and ramp the pre-production. I've been assuming he'd do The Dive as a breather between the big Avatar projects.

And as I said, I don't trust that source either. But since it's Yahoo News it was making the rounds pretty far and wide, and worth mentioning.

There was an audio interview with Marketsaw about a month ago where he said he didn't want to launch into another 3-4 year project - which was his reasoning for saying it probably wouldn't be Battle Angel next and why it follows that it wouldn't really be AVATAR II either. Facial rigs don't take THAT long to make.

If its out of The Dive and Road to Hiroshima, I hope its the latter.

And since then he's been dancing around it. Still, since I'm in the camp that does not want an Avatar sequel, I'm happy that something else will likely come first.

I'd much prefer Battle Angel, followed by The Dive. I really have no interest at all in the Hiroshima project.

I'm interested in the Hiroshima project, but not hyped at all. It certainly sounds more appealing to me than The Dive. Battle Angel news would make my day.

I went to see the film last night in regular size cinema screen/digital 3D.

We spent a bit extra and got a double sofa right at the back. I regret that now, because the screen seemed so far away.

I have a lazy eye. It doesn't look all crazy like Mad Eye Moody in HP but I don't have true stereo vision. My right eye is dominant and I have to consciously 'switch' to the left.

However, the 3D seemed to work but it was hard to watch - especially the fast moving scenes. I ended up with a headache but it was worth it! It was an amazing experience.

I'm going to go again but sit closer to the screen and see if it makes a difference.

Finally saw the movie in IMAX (liemax) 3D (it's been sold out.) I went in pretty spoiler-free, it was an amazing experience visually.

I was really pissed off at 'that bitch trying to act all Michelle Rodriguezy.'

So you can imagine my surprise when I found out who that was :lol

Norm was distracting and whiny. I look forward to seeing it again but damn it was long.

I think the visuals deserve another viewing on the big screen though.

Should I go see it again in 3D or settle for the 2D? My gf got kinda sick so I may not have a choice if she's going :/

Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but did anyone else find the frame rate in panning shots horribly jarring? My brain couldn't translate the stuttering in 3D as well as it does in 2D cinema. It really broke the illusion for me. However, when the camera was still or moved slowly, I was drawn in and liked what I saw.

ffffuuuuuck. In one interview you say 40 minutes of usable footage and in the next you say only 10-12 minutes longer. It better be the former >:(

My guess is that some of that footage will transition over to the sequel.

the fact that this is even a discussion is laughable. Hurt locker is brilliant art, not a schlocky special effects ridden fern gully remake.

Screen 7 of Tokyo's Roppongi Hills was completely full today, a Saturday night. This screen was bigger than the one I saw Avatar in last week.

And I got 5 programs for the people who asked for them! Look forward to a PM soon! :D
