How come no one seems to have a problem with the villian in District 9? How is he any deeper than Quaritch? Quaritch at least has some reason to hate everthing on Pandora since it's how his face got fucked up. But the main villian in D9...the military dude...he just seems to enjoy hurting/killing the prawns for no apparent reason.

Probably because the villain in D9 doesn't really have more than 10 or 15 minutes of cumulative screentime.....nor is he really the driving force of the narrative. Perhaps he's just as flimsy as Quaritch, but they didn't attempt to build as much on top of him.

I've decided to see the movie an unprecedented (for me) 6th time, BUT I'm going to be waiting a little over a month before seeing it again. The next venue, however, will be at a London IMAX theater. So I can eventually say I've contributed to the gross in three countries. :lol

Yea but Titanic was still making $20+ million in it's 10th weekend or something absurd like that, and I don't think anyone will ever match that.

Yeah, it wasnt until its 11th weekend that Titanic finally dipped below $20 million. Avatar may beat it, but the longevity of Titanic will be hard to topple. But if Avatar does have the same kind of legs, then its gross will be unreachable.

No one thought another movie could make $30M in its fifth weekend, and Avatar just made $41M. Im not sayin', Im just sayin'...

Except Avatar is tracking *well* ahead of Titanic at this point in time. It doesn't need Titanic's crazy legs because it made a lot more money early in the run.

It needs good legs, but not insane ones. It needs a multiplier of 2.5 off of this weekend to reach Titanic. That should be very doable.

Internationally it probably needs a multiplier of 2 or so to beat it.

Avatar is $240M away from Titanic. Let's say Avatar's box office dies after Alice In Wonderland (when it takes over IMAX). That's 7 weeks away.

Avatar just needs to make an average of $34M WORLDWIDE each week (all 7 days) for the next 7 weeks to beat Titanic. It's pretty much locked at this point.

I'm not a Titanic fanboy coming here saying how Avatar will never beat it I was just saying how impressive Titanic's run was.

So by the end of next weekend, or slightly after, this will be the number one film worldwide. Crazy. And in probably less than a month, it will be number one in the US as well.

Since it seems inevitable that this is going to be #1, the question now is how high will it go for total gross?

I remember we laughed at one person a long time ago that said it would make $700 million domestic. Anyone care to find that post where he said it, then we can all send him cookies and bow at his feet.

Titanic will sink by the end of next weekend. 41 million this weekend domestically?! What the hell? I never expected this in a million years. This movie will probably surpass 2 billion.

$41 million domestic and ~$200 million foreign. Titanic is going down next week, 2 billion by the end of January.

Now my $1.6b WW prediction just looks silly. I really didn't think it could hit $2b without Bill Paxton. Who knew?
With Bill Paxton, we were probably looking at $3b. There's always the sequel!

Very good chance the Titanic Domestic may fall before end of January also. Small chance, but it can happen. It WILL happen by the 2nd week of Feb. though.

We can't even have a proper gif for when Avatar overtakes Titanic. It'd be like Cameron punching himself.:lol
I still think that one of Quartich drinking coffee as the Titanic sinks was perfect. (Though I forgot to save it - anyone have it handy?)

Just for fun:

Monday-Sunday worldwide gross, this week and last:

261,372,858
316,315,186

That's a 17% drop. Assuming that holds, Avatar is tracking to $2.5b. So yeah $3b is probably out of reach.

I can't believe I even looked at that scenario. :lol

Can someone please tell me whether or not Cameron has been asked about just how well this film is doing? I'd love to know his reaction
Lighthearted humility.

On Oprah, upon being asked his thoughts on possibly de-throning Titanic, Cameron responded:

"It's about time someone knocked those Titanic jerks off of their perch."

Finally saw the film last night...

Two things. One, I'm so happy I went to see it. Two, I will never watch it again.

First, the bad. The film. It's really not that great. It's between 45-60 minutes too long, the second half pales in comparison to the awesome first half, and the inspirational speeches and overall corniness of the ultra bad army mans just starting getting out of hand. Worthington was really good though, as were most of the other main characters. The good though...

The film was the most incredible looking thing I've ever seen in a theater. JC has revolutionized theater-going with this new 3D or whatever it is, and it's not a gimmick at all. The visuals and special effects were insane, and I never want to see a non-3D film in the theater again. As long and as average as the film was, I will still recommend to everyone I know to see it, because it looks so amazing.

The first real 3D scene when Sully comes out of the cryo chamber is something I will always remember. It looked so good, at that moment I knew going to the theater to watch a movie has forever changed.

So proud JC is a canuck.

If Star Wars were digitized and put into 3D, it would only have to make 150-200M to be the number one film of all time (again). If anything I'm wondering if Avatar won't light a fire under George Lucas' ass to get another set of Special Editions into theatres.

Oh god...

At least 3D Star Wars would be a lot more welcome than the changes and CG added in the old Special Editions. That said I'm not sure how successful Star Wars 3D would be at the box office. The 1998 re-release did well but there was at least a decade of pent up demand where there was no new Star Wars content in the media. Now we're constantly assaulted with new exploitations of the IP.

You review is all over the road.

You herald it as the greatest looking film you've ever seen and how it has revolutionized the medium and yet you NEVER want to see it again.

This makes zero logical sense.

Please, explain to me how in your mind this makes sense.

My friend did the same thing in My Bloody Valentine 3D. For the first 15 minutes he went on about how the technology was so amazing and this was going to be the next big thing.

Then after 30 minutes he was begging me to leave, saying he would pay for my ticket if we could just walk out of the theatre. I made sure that we at least stayed through the 3D sex scene.

I know I won't be watching that shit.

Is it really that hard to understand?

Yeah, me neither. Avatar looks amazing but frankly I'm not going to go as far as a previous poster and say I'll never watch another movie in 2D again. Avatar was made for 3D and it did well, but there are lots of areas where 3D still needs to be improved on, so I have a feeling there is still definitely a place for a great looking 2D film.

This especially applies to already filmed movies. The 3D will be even more gimmicky there.

Except Titanic is being planned for a 3D re-release, so if the ship ends up losing its top spot to Avatar, it might well end up taking it back eventually.

Star Wars in good 3D would be awesome though. I'd go see that.

Yep it's mindboggling.

That would be like is someone gave me some of the best food I ever had, I mean this meal revolutionized food in general for me.

Logically, why would I NEVER want to have that meal EVER again?

If he had said that he NEVER wanted to see it in theaters again, that would be one thing but he said NEVER again. Period.

It's just odd to me.
