RealD or Dolby 3D: how can I tell which I saw?

Did your glasses look like something the Blues Brothers would wear? If so, that probably means it was RealD, but I'm not sure.Naked Snake said:RealD or Dolby 3D: how can I tell which I saw?

ELI is a lock to be Denzel's second biggest BO success, awesome first movie Gary. Fuck I'm still haunted by the movie's visuaul and score .. when is out on Blu-ray?Gary Whitta said:(Probably) more accurate Friday estimates from Variety:
Avatar $7.5m
Edge of Darkness $5.7m
When in Rome $4.38m
The Book of Eli $2.48m
The Tooth Fairy $2.25m
Naked Snake said:That was the other main "science thing" that bothered me (besides the floating mountains, which I'm fine with now)... I kept thinking "Damn, that's some really fast Wi-Fi signal."
I'm all ears if anyone has convincing arguments for it.
SlipperySlope said:I was under the impression that the consciousness was transferred over. It explains the ending a lot better. When the main character is permanently transported into the Avatar. If the Avatar was simply a receiver, that could never have happened.

Wow, looks like you don't get it until May 20! I guess you'll just have to keep going to see Avatar until thenScullibundo said:It hasn't even hit Australia yet. What the fuck Gary? I thought we were friends.
Naked Snake said:No, they looked more rectangular shaped than curved, but I see that both RealD and Dolby 3D can look like those, so it doesn't mean anything.
Edit: After reading detailed descriptions of the formats, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference between RealD and Dolby, so I don't care to find out which one I saw anymore... I've decided that it's all gimmicky to me.

Dolby 3d glasses are much more expensive and must be returned to the cinema. The cost is ~ 100 USD.

Naked Snake said:I have a question: I paid around 11 USD for my ticket, this was in a theater in the Middle East. I'm wondering how much (roughly) of that goes to my local theater and what's the studio's cut? And whether the theater's cut is counted towards the worldwide boxoffice total?
The DGA award is viewed as a reliable predictor of the Academy Award for best director. The same director has won both in all but six years since 1948, including last year, when Danny Boyle won both trophies for "Slumdog Millionaire."
The directors branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences currently has 366 voting members, or about 6% of the total membership of 5,777. Oscar noms will be announced Tuesday.
Naked Snake said:That's exactly what I meant by it. The 3D is not necessary or useful to me. I found the experience inferior to regular 2D cinema. If this is how 3D TVs will work then I'm glad because I won't be wanting to buy one any time soon.
Scullibundo said:Well Bigelow won the Director's Guild Award.
Oscar night is going to be interesting.

Nah. Other than the Golden Globes, it's pretty much been all Hurt Locker, all the time. Avatar will still get a nom and win a shitload of technicals though.Rindain said:Cameron deserved it. He directed the fuck out of Avatar, created an entire fictional universe, not to mention invented all the technology to do it.
I'm thinking a split may happen this year at the Oscars. Not sure which way it will go though.
Yeah, the DGA seals it for Bigelow, it's not even a question at this point. I think Avatar is just superbly directed, but I haven't seen the competition so I can't really comment on it. She's clearly the Oscar favorite.Sharp said:Nah. Other than the Golden Globes, it's pretty much been all Hurt Locker, all the time. Like I said in the other thread, he should stick to reviewing bad movies. This wasn't anywhere near his other stuff, and he actually got a lot of details wrong.CassSept said:It was linked it another thread but I thought someone who doesn't go to that thread might find it interesting

It's actually a really good, well-thought-out review that makes a lot of great points. He noticed shit that I certainly didn't. Can't wait for his Attack of the Clones review, he specializes in ripping apart nonsensical, poorly written, or manipulative shit, and in AOTC's case that pretty much describes the entire movie.CassSept said:It was linked it another thread but I thought someone who doesn't go to that thread might find it interesting

Just can't get immersed into the movie by the blurry extreme close ups, always making you focus on the characters. Fast scenes were also blurry, etc.
I don't see the point of seeing a good CGI movie to see it ruined with that gimmick. Knew it was going to be bad, but the luxury theatre (Gold Class) only offers it in 3D.

They are perdicting a 40% drop on Sunday which will NOT happen this will jump with actuals to 31-32 I think. Current estimates put it at -14% for the weekend which is just fucking insane.demosthenes said:Weekend estimates are in:

It will pass Titanic domestic this week.
Lucas wants to do a conversion for Star Wars. I haven't seen a conversion before, but I'm not too optimistic about how they might compare to the real thing. Clash of the Titans is supposed to be one of the first movies to get a conversion, and will come out the first week of April, according to Hollywood Reporter. It's been said a conversion costs about $5M per movie.Booser said:Ok Im a virgin when it comes to this technology but is there any way old films can be reworked to look like this, or any word of that happening?

There was a conversion done of The Nightmare Before Christmas a while back. I thought it looked awful, but I saw it in Dolby 3D.cakefoo said:Lucas wants to do a conversion for Star Wars. Kaijima said:This has got to be one of the most disingenuous things people say on the Internet :lol Like there's not a dozen things you don't geek over or just try to figure out purely for the sake of curiosity in whatever it is that /you/ prefer to talk about.
Anyway, for those who are still curious, I went through the Pandora wiki thing and found an entry that says it's a psionic link. It references humans (in Avatar's timeline) discovering how to make mental communication work via technology, and applying this to the remote body driver science after much experimentation. While the communication is instant, it does say that the range is still limited to a few tens of kilometers. But then, they do keep moving the mobile base around in the movie. Or perhaps for the movie script they just decided intentionally to not mention or pay attention to any distance limits.
FYI, the wiki description also says that the more anthropopmorphic the remote body is, the easier it is for the driver to synch with it, aka the avatars having five fingers and toes, and also more human like faces. It also means the tech doesn't work with trying to hook a human mind up to something that doesn't match a human body image, like a bird or something.
As for how this idea impacts the movie's ending, well, whether or not there's a literal transfer of consciousness during regular operation of the driver's rig, the part in the film where Grace is tended to by the Big Glowy Magic Tree could be taken to suggest that BGMT's tendrils are getting into the nervous system of each body and trying to rewire things. The avatar bodies do have a full brain and such (based off the driver's genetic makeup, remember), they're just grown in vats and purposefully kept vegetables without a personality of their own.
