I definitely think Avatar will climb back up. I saw The Wolfman and can't see it doing much better than 80-90 mil domestic over a few weeks and that is being generous. Percy doesn't look to be the Potter killer some touted it as being, either.

Someone touted Percy Jackson as being a Harry Potter killer?

...who? :lol :lol

Other moons of Polyphemus will be explored in sequel - from Cameron's mouth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eaW5gHvb9U&feature=channel#t=1m0s
I really hope they put just as much effort into designing the other moon(s) than they did with Pandora

Btw Jon Landau is still saying that Cameron is writing a novel. He says its a prequel novel

http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1631859/story.jhtml

"[We] won't have time to do [these stories] in the movie, or maybe in sequels," Landau explained of what Cameron will be writing about. "[So the novel will] give a foundation for the world.

"It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn't have time to deal with — like the schoolhouse and Sigourney [Weaver's character] teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake's brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that," Landau explained.

Very interesting. I wonder how they'll intertwine the other Polythemus moons with the current story?

I'm also glad that the novel Cameron is writing is more of a prequel. The movie pretty much has all you really need for it's storyline, and you can read the scriptment for some other tidbits. Though it looks like Cameron believes his theatrical cut is "the cut" so it'd make sense that he wouldn't want to write over anything with a novel of the actual film.

Since it sounds like he's writing the prequel novel first, I wonder if he'd be one to lay some possible foundation hints for the sequel films in it?

Well Cameron has said there are elements in the movie currently that are directly linked to what he has in mind for the sequel so I doubt he needs the novel to do that.

So no extended cut, but just scenes on the DVD/BD? Shitty deal.

EDIT: learn to finish reading before opening your mouth, Solo :lol

Sounds good to me. This might be the release that gets me to pick up a Blu-Ray player; should be some good prices next December.

Those things are awfully expensive unfortunately =\
You think they'll only go down to a decent price by December? That's a long wait

I just hope the feature actually happens and that I dont have to wait for a December release (fat chance).

Otherwise if I have to wait for December, then Cameron better get Weta to finish several more scenes so we can choose even more for the branching feature :D

Its a bit wierd to see Cameron say what he said about extended cuts though, especially when 50% of his films prior to Avatar had extended editions/special editions/what have you.

Its not that weird imo. In those other films, the theatrical cut was cut down strictly due to studio concerns. This is his final cut and he apparently doesn't want confusion about which cut of his is the best, because the theatrical cut is his only real cut.

I want a goddamned making of True Lies.

That would be nice, but after watching the horrifying DVD the other day, I would rather have an anamorphic picture on it first. Because the current DVD is atrocious. At least the Abyss has decent picture quality for not being anamorphic, where True Lies is just grainy edge enhanced shit. Such a shame too.

It would be awesome if he recorded Commentaries for both films, especially Abyss. And obviously I hope we get some nice commentaries for Avatar.

Pixar's movies are amazing so I guess this is a compliment!

To be honest ive never seen one.. i always fall asleep when they are on tv..:lol

Are you haters really like this, or do you just want to annoy other people?

How can you say Avatar is bad because it looks like a Pixar movie and then say you've never seen a Pixar movie? That makes no sense

I don't get haters =\

Finally saw the movie for the first time. The screening i was at was completely packed (IMAX 3D in San Francisco) and i had to wait in line to get a good seat.

I'm really glad i resisted the urge to read the wiki page because this movie was fantastic. going in fairly uncertain about it, especially after so much time has passed since it was released, made me enjoy it even more.

Got a few questions though:
1. How long did it take to get to pandora from earth? I think i heard 9 years, but i maybe wrong.
2. Was there a longer cut to this movie?
3. What was it exactly that made it the atmosphere toxic to humans?
4. What kind "plans" are there for a sequel? I seems like everything is tied up pretty neatly.

Anyway, it was really great movie. I'm glad i got to see it in theaters. I would've really regretted it if i saw it for the first time on home video.

EDIT: Also, i'm amazed at how much lore and "science" they created for the film. They can really turn this into a HUGE franchise with all this material. Which i'm sure they will.

1) a little over 5 years

2) Just Tsu'Teys death and him handing over the tribe to Jake. Now there was a lot of material never finished or done (40 some odd minutes) which if you can get the script you'll be able to read it all. some stuff that should never have been cut IMO but oh well.

3) gases in the air. It's why we only had to wear masks not full blown air suits, etc.

4) all we know about sequels is that it'll follow Jake and Neytiri, Cameron left some scenes in the first to set up sequels (likely the beginning about dreaming of flying while on earth that Jake mentions) and well see other moons around the planet.

Interstellar travel: From the pandorapedia: "Mission Profile: 0.46
year initial acceleration @ 1.5 g to reach 0.7 c; 5.83 years cruise @
0.7 c; 0.46 year deceleration; 1 year loiter in orbit around Pandora;
Mission Duration: 6.75 + 1.0 + 6.75 = 14.5 Earth years. However,
relativistic effects shorten the time onboard ship to slightly less
than 6 years each way."

For your reference, not an official answer though.

Just watched this again

Kevin Smith mentioned in his podcast, someone other than Sigourney Weaver played Grace's avatar. There is no close-up for Grace in the video above, but the actress does look shorter than Sigourney.

BTW, who's the actress Kevin Smith refers to? Lisa ..something..

He did say alot of Grace + Jake scenes were cut, which would be neat to see back since I'm a huge weaver fan, but it might get in the way of the complete enveloping of jake and the audience in the world.

Meanwhile, look for TITANIC on Blu-ray in the near future along with a theatrical 3-D reissue in 2012.
Yes Please!

Frig at december bluray though. Atleast it wont be tempting me with 3D tvs for a long time.

Yea she talked alot about it on the Daily Show

And YES! for more avatar movies and a book

Cameron was saying that testing showed the audience to be 70% male opening weekend and it took a few weeks to get to 50/50. That's interesting.

Have those percentages been mentioned in this thread? I'm curious what those numbers looked like as the weeks passed.

He says it's Lisa Romaine/Romajin/Romain. Not sure how the last name is spelled. You'd have to look at the credits of Avatar to see her name, since the IMDB listing is probably not detailed enough to list CG doubles for the principal actors.

He's wrong, at any rate. Weaver played her avatar. She's talked about it, Cameron has talked about it, she's seen in full mo-cap gear on set in every behind the scenes video performing her avatar.

And not sure how detailed IMDB needs to be to include a double, but they have over 1,800 credits listed for Avatar - but those names are not among them.

You don't think they had anyone else play Weaver for stunts or pickup shots?

Smith says she's the godmother of his child so it doesn't seem like a likely mistake to make. Though SModcast is not known for its veracity of reporting either.

Possible. If he said there was a stand-in for a couple pick up shots, that's different from what I thought he was talking about, which was someone else playing large parts of Weaver's avatar. It wouldn't surprise me if someone stood in for a minor pick up shot or two.

It's a sexy pic, and all, but all of this Earth stuff, is getting me worried, I want more of Neytiri, and Jake's Avatar stuff in the extended version! :(

also sorry if posted but Zoe Saldana on Jay Leno show // 01/21/2010 God her laugh! soo hot

She was called ET back in school. I could be wrong, but I imagine a part of the reason why she was called ET was because of her long neck....and...I find her neck extremely erotic and attractive.

and it suddenly occurred to me! .....remember those National Geographics Photos of women wearing neck rings to make the appeareance of a longer neck?

I thought those neck rings were so weird, but now I can at least understand some of the motives behind it.

A series of interview vignettes from MTV: http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/02/18...od-is-getting-3d-wrong-and-his-oscar-changes/

On sequels: just says that it will follow Sam and Zoe again and more than likely humans will still feature

On Wisher writing scripts from Terminator 5 and 6: He doesn't mind it. He is so far removed from Terminator that nothing about it affects him anymore

On rebooting Spider-Man: Says he hopes the Spider reboot will be a boost in quality similar to Nolans Batman films. Says he hated all previous Batman flicks but loved both of Nolans movies

On 3D: Same deal as usual. 3D should come from the Director wanting to do it and not be a studio mandate. Says he hopes Clash of the Titans does well as it stars Sam Worthington but he doesn't agree with what they are doing by converting to 3D

On Added scenes on the Blu-Ray: 5-6 minutes of 100% finished footage, 15 or so minutes of unfinished footage (cant afford to finish em). Hopes to do a branching feature so fans can see all of that footage put back in the movie, including the unfinished scenes

On Oscars: Will be very happy is Bigelow wins. Says he already got his statues and while it would be great to see all the hard work put into the movie being rewarded, other directors would benefit more than him from winning and he believes all the crew will get rewarded in the tech categories

Possible Blu-Ray release dates:

“It’s all right on schedule,” said Cameron. “We’ll do the Blu-ray and the standard def DVD April 22nd, that’s our plan as of right now, and that’ll be pretty much bare bones. And then we’ll do a value-added DVD and a 3-D Blu-ray in I think November sometime
