On the subject of Box Office returns... Avatar dipping just 40% against Alice in Wonderland is damn impressive. In fact, other than Crazy Heart, it had the best hold in the top ten, despite losing like all its 3D screens to Alice. Not bad for a movie that I'd imagined would pretty much halt its run in its tracks. Avatar's looking good for $750m.

So I'm just reading an interview with Spielberg for The Pacific and stumbled across this little nugget at the end of the interview.

Q: What is the state of the film industry for filmmakers like yourself?

Steven Spielberg: The state of the industry, I’m very unqualified to talk about the state of the industry right now. It’s the wrong forum anyway to get into the state of the industry but thank goodness for Avatar. Thank goodness for Avatar.

Q: Has that challenged you to try new things in your upcoming films?

The word we're getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result. The question is the appetite still going to be there after the summer glut of movies. We're going to assess that. We're talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative.

Possible Extended theatrical re-release. The fact that Cameron actually mentioned this is good news :D

A: They're converting Clash of the Titans in eight weeks. But I'm guessing six months to a year to do it right. We're targeting spring of 2012 for the release (of a 3D version of Titanic), which is the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship.

Extended cut in theatres? I'd be there day fucking one. However there would obviously be the problem of the non-digital IMAX theatres not being able to screen it.

I'd assume they would only re-release it in Digital 3D theaters.

Getting additional 3D screens is one thing (there will be even more by then), but IMAX screens are still limited and would most likely already be scheduled for another movie

Get ready for "Avatar"-plus.

James Cameron and Fox are in discussions about rereleasing "Avatar," primarily in 3D theaters, in late summer -- and, tantalizingly, with additional scenes that had been left on the cutting-room floor in the rush to ready the epic for its Dec. 18 release.

The impetus for a rerelease is the feeling that, even though "Avatar" is the highest-grossing movie of all time, producers could have raked in even more money had they been able to hold on to the digital and Imax 3D screens that were lost when Disney opened "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D on March 5.

As for how much additional footage Cameron might add to "Avatar," the guessing began early Thursday when Imax CEO Richard Gelfond said during a Gabelli & Co. investor conference in New York that Cameron had about 40 minutes of additional material that didn't make the theatrical cut. He also predicted a rerelease, which he said probably would occur in the fall.

Cameron had said that he had 10-12 minutes of extra scenes that he cut and could quickly put through postproduction and have ready to add to a director's cut for a theatrical reissue or as an extra on the DVD release. One scene has to do with Jake Sully's avatar proving himself to the Na'vi people; the other involves a native festival during which tribe member Tsu'tey gets drunk.

The maximum length a movie can be released in analog Imax theaters is 170 minutes -- a number Cameron was aware of when he made his original edit -- so he could add about 10 minutes to the 160-minute current run time and still be in all Imax locations. That seems more likely than trying to add as much as 40 minutes.

Id be happy either way, but Id rather see more footage, resulting in forsaking Imax screens, instead of just enough new scenes to fit into the Imax limit

eugh. reeks of 'we got booted out from 3d screens by Alice so we'll rescreen later in the year with some tacked-on footage to get people to keep coming back'

Damn right. If you had the option of it being rereleased at theatres with extra footage or not, I imagine you would opt for the rerelease.
 
I know I'm late to the party on this but I've been looking for a theater to see Avatar in 3-D and haven't been able to find one. Unfortunately I've been busy moving and busy being broke since Avatar came out and have not been able to see it yet.

Is there anywhere online with a comprehensive listing of places I could see it? I noticed the IMAX listings further up the page but that IMAX theater is about an hours drive from my house and I don't think I would really enjoy watching a movie like avatar on one of those giant domes.

Well when they are told by exhibitors that they left a couple hundred million on the floor due to losing 3D screens and IMAX I can see why they would do it :D
 
Well I understand Spielberg's enthusiasm. His best friend Lucas lost it, he just realized Cameron's there to fill the void :D

Anyways I'm really really pumped to see what Tin Tin will look like.
 
Details about the November Special Edition Blu-Ray from the junket a few days ago:

Special Edition

The November release will feature three cuts of the movie: the "basic movie", as theatrically released; an extended cut with 6 minutes of fully finished footage seamlessly added back in; and an earlier cut of the film that has 30 or 35 minutes of additional footage, some of which will be in unfinished form. Cameron explained: "it will be a little bit more like some of the Disney stuff that they do where they leave pencil tests in for scenes that were never done. That's really more of a fan's exploration of what the movie might have been, or a lot of the ideas that fed into it."

Additionally, the disc will offer a picture-in-picture with "just the reference cameras of the capture." This will be a parallel cut, matching the finished movie shot by shot. "It doesn't look like the movie, but the essence of it and the moment is exactly what you see in the final film. It's just people in black leotards. It's pretty wild. It's pretty amazing."

Additionally, Jon Landau said the making of Documentary will be pretty massive and cover every single facet of the production.

I really wish they could finish more footage for the extended cut. I mean, with all the money the movie has made :\ Still, will be interesting to watch the 30-35 minute longer version even if a lot of that footage is unfinished.

He said the theatrical cut is his director's cut. Any other version made would be for the fans only.

- Weta is currently finishing several new scenes

The visual effects artists at Weta Digital have to begin work now to have the deleted scenes completed in time for a November DVD release. "We're just getting into it," Cameron said. "I've earmarked the scenes that I want to have completed by Weta, because that has to be done now. A lot of those decisions about the supplement are going to be made over the next few months."

Do they think they can get people back into theatres for an extra six minutes of footage, though? It seems like it'd take more than that to get moviehouses and moviegoers excited about giving up a 3D screen or coughing up another $15.
 
Wow, just had a really great night.
We went to the last 3D showing my local theater is having for AVATAR.
There were maybe 25 people in the theater and it was totally one big party!
 
Finally going to my last showing tonight. It will be the 6th time that I missed going to a few times now.

Also, there's been some talk that Cameron has said he would like to shoot part of the sequel in the amazon.
