Well...Avatar is a digital movie, and the digital RealD/Dolby3D presentation delivered to those theaters was just 2048x871(2.35:1) while the blu-ray is 1920x1080(16:9)...wait I just realized the blu-ray actually has a higher resolution. :lol

The digital cinema release did weigh about 100GB more than the BD, though. :P

Don't most digital systems use motion JPEG for their file format? Or at least they used to. And I know that the audio is usually uncompressed. The Blu is lossless, but they just dont even compress it for theatrical release.

From wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_cinema

...

Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), a joint venture of the six major studios, published a system specification for digital cinema.[1] Briefly, the specification calls for picture encoding using the ISO/IEC 15444-1 "JPEG2000" (.jp2) standard and use of the CIE XYZ color space at 12 bits per component encoded with a 2.6 gamma applied at projection, and audio using the "Broadcast Wave" (.wav) format at 24 bits and 48 kHz or 96 kHz sampling, controlled by an XML-format Composition Playlist, into an MXF-compliant file at a maximum data rate of 250 Mbit/s. Details about encryption, key management, and logging are all discussed in the specification as are the minimum specifications for the projectors employed including the color gamut, the contrast ratio and the brightness of the image. While much of the specification codifies work that had already been ongoing in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the specification is important in establishing a content owner framework for the distribution and security of first-release motion picture content.

It seems they use JPEG2000 for video, and uncompressed WAV for audio.

edit: beaten

Oh my god this is the most beautiful Blu-ray presentation I have seen in ages and I am only at the beginning :lol

Just wait until you get to the part of the film with Jake training with the Nav'i. Just crazy beautiful.

Can't wait for this, I think it's out Monday here, I've been too busy with work to check though.

I've never seen a Blu-ray film, even though my laptop has a BD Drive, I have a PS3, and a HDTV :lol Guess I'm in for a treat then?

Edit: Also, I heard you can't take screenshots while watching a Blu-ray? Some sort of copy-right protection bull =( Is there any way around this? I'd love to screen grab some frames for wallpapers and stuff.

The problem is that most blus after this will look lame by comparison. Most.

Are there any screenshots yet from the BD release? I'd like to see how it looks, to tide me over until the blu is released here next week :)

Wow, American Mailboxes suck.

Your mail is available for EVERYONE to access, should you be away from home for example.

Video and Presentation

If there are any complaints to be made – and really, they are few – it's that the CGI effects take on a slightly artificial, animated look and don't blend quite as seamlessly as you might remember. It only makes you realize just how much of the film was created on a computer. Depth and dimension are both strong, though some of the background details (like the computer screens in the lab) are blurred, likely because of the transition from three dimensions to two. There are no such problems with the foreground images, which are sharp as a tack. Overall, this is a sumptuous video presentation that should please fans.
Read the CG issue in a couple of reviews so far. Personally, I'm not sure if those complains are worth the 9/10 since other every single review I've read so far gave the video a perfect score.

I saw Avatar twice in 3D and I thought it was pretty average (the 3D). Didn't really pop out like I expected. The effect was subtle.

This is why I liked it so much in 3d. It didn't beat you over the head with stupid 3d gimmicks.

I dont get it. Bluray.com and dvdbeaver are my 2 go-to sources for reviews, and both usually review all the big releases weeks ahead of their street date, but both of them will be putting up Avatar reviews after it streets.

'Avatar' sets first-day Blu-ray sales record
THR said:
Featuring a 2D version of the theatrical blockbuster for now, DVDs and Blu-ray discs of James Cameron's "Avatar" were flying off store shelves Thursday, the movie's first day in stores.

Recent market momentum for Blu-ray enthusiasm was apparent, as Blu-ray sales of "Avatar" -- at 1.5 million copies -- well outpaced first-day sales of previous high-def top dog "The Dark Knight." An early industry estimate set overall disc sales of the title comfortably north of 4 million units, putting it well on track to become the year's top-selling release to date.

Retailers sold out of 60% of their Blu-ray inventory on average, a Fox rep said. He declined to specify unit shipments.

Mass merchants moved out roughly 50% of their "Avatar" DVDs, the spokesman added.
To the surprise of nobody.

It took a while but it seems the format finally got its "Matrix". Avatar's day one sales are a crazy improvement over TDK's 600k.

The movie continues to impress and never lose visual interest to me, still as amazing as when I first saw it, a must own even if you dislike the movie for the demo properties of this disc.

Avatar and Pixar are the only reasons I'm considering getting a Blu-ray player, and I can't imagine I'm the only person who feels that way.

That was why I owned the DTS DVD of The Haunting. A terrible movie that I was pissed that I paid $2 to see in the theater, but the DTS-ES (first DVD to feature it too!) track was just fucking insane. I have only found a handful of subs capable of handling that film. The Dolby sounded good, but the DTS version was in a league of its own.

The picture quality on this is impeccable. I almost prefer this to the 3D versions I saw in theaters. Just freakin amazing :p

Here's a quick screen cap from the bedroom tv:

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Okay, Im close to saying fuck it and buying it. But I still refuse to double dip, so it means skipping out on the extras in November.

And when you do break and buy them both, what do you tell the woman you love what you did to be with her again?

I watched it earlier today and am wanting to watch it again just to drool over the picture quality. I ripped the DVD to my iPad, but that doesn't cut it after watching the Blu.

Buy it. Watch the rerelease in theaters this summer. Skip the November blu-ray in favor of getting the 3D version next year :D

I watched it the both times I did in 3D. I enjoyed the 3D but I can't wait to watch Avatar with its natural (and astonishing) color vibrancy.

I am a sucker though. I will bite on the special edition in November unless the features are mediocre. But I dont know how many more times I will see it in the theater in August when it rereleases.

So all this talk about the extra 6 minutes in November, last time I read about this stuff they were gonna be either branching paths or in a menu or something. Is that still the case? Or has Cameron decided they're worth re-integrating into the film since then?
