Scripts. He's planning to have them finished by January, but as is typical with Cameron - they'll be ready when they're ready. Better than having him rush them.

Agree. From an article posted in The Hobbit thread:

He said he hoped to have the scripts completed by February and begin filming by the end of next year.

"I want to get these scripts nailed down, I don't want to be writing the movie in post production," the director said.

"We kind of did that on the first picture, I ended up cutting out a lot of scenes and so on and I don't want to do that again."
Glad he recognized he shouldn't have cut so much from the film, Tsu'tey's scene especially.

Well, what I think he means is that he wrote the scripts willy-nilly without accounting for what he would have to cut in terms of budget feasibility and IMAX runtimes.

I have a bad feeling this means he's going to try and shoot to come in under a certain page count for those purposes alone.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind another 3h+ Cameron epic.

Also LOL at the fact that he's now aiming to finish them by Feb instead of Jan. Didn't they say early 2013 to start production last time? Now it's late 2013. I keep telling you guys, 2016 at the earliest is looking like a mighty good bet.

Right, which I attribute in part to planning, so to the extent that he's planning the stories better this time around to fit within constraints I think his comment is reason to be optimistic.

Not me. Because I'd hope by then that the IMAX theatres would have implemented the laser projection system and we wouldn't have filmmakers compromising their stories to fit under that silly runtime.

As for budget constraints? Cameron should be able to get all the budget he needs for whatever he wants to tell on these sequels this time around.

this is one of the best movies of all time.

can't wait for the sequels.

I think it has potential. Though I don't see them moving much beyond Humans vs Navi. It's not like the Navi will be at odds with Pandora seeing as they are one with the planet. I hope we get to see some other tribes though, like the coastal tribe.

Cameron has already said in the past that the sequels will branch out to the other moons orbiting Polyphemus.

I feel like we're talking past each other. I'd rather Cameron figure out what will be in the movie and write his script around that, rather than overshooting and having to cut back later - regardless of the reason (budget, IMAX, too damn long, etc.). That's what happened with Avatar and a lot of great fucking material was left out of the theatrical cut. So if Cameron wants to take his time so the initial release is better crafted as a whole, I'm all for it.

For anyone who's interested, the Extended Collector's Edition is down to $20 on Amazon. I just bought it (At that price, why not? The making of documentary by itself makes it worth it), and will probably have a get-together with a few friends and watch it sometime soon. I'll post impressions afterward. I haven't seen it in almost 3 years now, and tbh don't remember a whole lot of it.

Have you seen the extended cut?

Lolz I'll wait for the 3D bluray EE Ultrahi-def 48fps version.

Surprised it's still on the first OT.
You can't quote Avatar. All the lines are shit.

Well its only staying alive by a few of us and I don't even post as much now. Just waiting till the next one is further along... so 2014 at the earliest to start getting hype lol

This thread coming back up made my blood boil.

God this movie pissed me off.

Everything's backwards, Quaritch was the real hero.

I will watch Avatar 2 if it turns out the Life Tree thing resurrects him so that he can lay waste to Pandora in some contrived suicidal world plotline. The final scene should be Quaritch curbstoming Jake in the face.

I went to the theater twice when it came out. I tried to rewatch it a couple of months ago with the extended edition, but I couldn't finish. I might try to give it another watch.

I was stunned the first time I saw Avatar. The shine kind of wore off on subsequent watches because the imagery wasn't as mind blowing as the first time, but it is a solid, safe movie.

Yes, I actually liked it the first time I saw it, but a rewatch hurt it a lot. Now it's hard for me to watch. I may have an irrational dislike for this movie lol. It's not bad though. I couldn't see it as anything but a safe movie.

That's not a difficult point to make though. I may dislike Avatar, but there is no way in hell Prometheus is better.

Well he seemed to be one of those passionate Avatar haters, yet liked Prometheus. I don't hate Prometheus, just think it was painfully average. I remember coming out of Avatar thinking it was tremendous. This being said, I've only seen them one time each, both in theaters opening weekend.

Quaritch is the bomb. He's like the only real 80s character we got last decade. Badass to the bone.

He may be the most generic character I've seen in recent times.

Exactly
