Well... let me ask you this... what do you consider to be an advancement of the cinema experience? And who do you think is pushing the "art" of cinema in 2012?
Just digging yourself in deeper. With each post you demonstrate you don't know what you are talking about. Denying 3D is a major advancement is one thing - it is - but you really should brush up on everything else about Avatar.
I consider an advancement of the making of motion pictures the ability to direct scenes in a 100% virtual environment, allowing the director the most direct control possible over the shots of his film, as well as the ability to edit and change scenes on the fly AFTER the performance has been captured and the actors no longer available.

No one person is pushing the art of cinema, but the invention of things like iPhones, YouTube, special apps, and others making it possible for ANYBODY to make a movie and do various things with it is far more important than James Cameron's stuff.

Visually it was interesting but isn't that like... to the credit of the artist who worked on the film, and not Cameron?
Considering that Cameron himself was involved as a designer, nevermind how detailed the scripts are regarding the visual design, how specific his actual requests are to the other designers and modelers, and of course as director obviously has final say on anything design related, then well...yeah I guess he doesn't deserve any credit whatsoever.

Actually, artistically, most good directors probably could, and probably better too. James Cameron's awful writing is what ruined what could have been a decent movie.

When your scripts are responsible for some of the most iconic and successful movies of all time, who in their right fucking mind would think they need to hand control over to someone else.
The script to Avatar in no way shape or form shows any need for Cameron to hand over writing duties to anyone else. Once again, critical AND commercial success (on a level not shared by any other director on earth).

Was he actually drawing the designs, making the models, and deciding which to animals to mash together to make a 'new' one, etc? I'm not saying nor have I ever (so I don't know where you're getting THAT from) that he doesn't deserve some credit for what was the best part of the movie (the CG/the visuals), I'm just saying that I give much more credit to the.... actual artist who made the... art.
For the record, I like Avatar and saw it 3 times in theaters (granted, I did work at a movie theater at the time so it was all free).

Cameron did many of the drawings. He designed Neytiri and you'll find pretty much everything in the film looks EXACTLY how he described it in his original treatment.
He designed and personally drew several of the creatures, the Navi are pretty much his own design as well. You can see his own artwork in the various Making Of and Art of books for the film.
Of course other designers had a pass at all that stuff, but he ended up using a lot of his own designs, the Na'vi went through TONS, but in the end it was his original sketch of Neytiri that pretty much set the tone.
