RPG Clique: Decipher Final Fantasy 2j for me (plz)

Having finished Final Fantasy 1 on GBA (level 73, beat Omega, Shinryu, all that hot jazz), Chaos was defeated within 5 minutes.

So now I come upon the next Final Fantasy. The second. But uh...

How does the level up system work? Do I want to equip/buy the weapon that gives more attack? Do I want to evenly distribute the skill levels among weapons?

How does magic work? Do I want to buy every Tome for every character?

And above all: HOW CAN I CHEAT THE SYSTEM

This is so confusing :(

BUT THANKS IN ADVANCE

please help demi

The NES version had some ways to cheat the system, like choosing to attack an enemy then backing out of that would count as actually doing it, so you could in a short time bring your weapon/magic levels up very high. However, I believe those are all gone by the time Dawn of Souls is around.

I'm about the same place as you on that it seems, having recently beaten FF1 at *checks* 84 and now being a couple hours into FFII. Really... do what you want. I've not bought any better weapon or armor and just beat up on myself occasionally to raise HP and done fine so far. It's such a... quirkily broken system. The more HP you lose, the more your max HP increases. So if you've got better armor and don't take as much damage... you'll just end up with a lower max HP! Swell. And if you want to have plenty of MP... go around wasting MP! So the best way to "cheat", really, is to go around beating your own party up and healing them back with your MP. That's not so much cheating, though, as it is this game's version of regular leveling up.

I played through the NES version, and don't recall any particular advantage from one weapon to another. Sure one weapon might be stronger than another, but whichever one your character ends up attacking with a dozen times should do fine, especially if this version is as pansified as FFI.

I think each character has a finite number of magic spells; like whatever can fit on the screen without scrolling. So giving everything to one person isn't possible. I'm mixing it up a bit by splitting up Fire/Thunder/Blizzard among the three main characters, though giving them all Cure.

i beat FFII on the GBA a while ago, dont remember my levels.

I basically just kept people with the same weapon types through te entire game, and would spend time beating up on myself or letting my characters go to near death without healing them. When I got near a boss battle, or a hard dungeon area or something, then I would equip the good armor to protect myself.

as for magic...uh...it mostly sucked, as I recall. Though some enemies are annoyingly only really affected by magic.

So is there a "level up" for other stuff such as strength/intelligence/defense etc? Or does that just depend on your current equipment? I think the latest thing I did was get Minwu...I totally forgot where I left off.

Check this out - I wrote this FAQ like 6 or 7 years ago explaining how to "cheat" the system... by attacking your own guys, by using a spell, and then cancelling it, to get points for spells without using MP, etc... Not sure how well it works on the GBA version of FF2, since I haven't played that. But it worked nicely in the Famicom version and the PSX FF Origins :P

And you level up stats based on what you use... if you use up a lot of MP in a round, your max MP will increase, get damaged a lot, your HP and DEF will increase, attack with a shield equipped, AGL will increase, attack with strong weapons, STR will increase.

Wow, what a shitty system. It's like SaGa...but crappy. And SaGa is crappy. God this is horrible.

WHERE IS FINAL FANTASY III DS

WHERE IS FINAL FANTASY III DS

Yeah, this was the inspiration of the SaGa systems. I think I remember hearing on here that that guy Kawazu that everybody on here hates, got his start with FFII before going onto making the SaGas. I'm dying to see FFIII DS at E3, that's one of my favorite FFs :D

The select-cancel trick for raising weapon and spell levels is no longer present in the GBA version. Just fight with the weapon/cast the spell and it goes up fast anyway.

Easiest way to get started is to get spells (I only get 1 elemental spell for the 3 main characters, and then only a handful of other spells in the game), go north of the castle that Scott was (Fynn/Phin/Finn) and fight badguys in the swamp for item drops.

Sell the crap, have Ming=Wu cast his 'lower targets MP' spell on each of the main 3 characters so they have about 100 each. After that, put him in the back row and go southwest of Altea and get to Mysidia. Buy the Ogre Killer (Axe) and Flame Spear for Guy, and 4 Thief Gloves. Spells are what get you there, and back.

In case you didn't know, HP and MP go up at the end of a battle when you lose a lot of either. Stamina and Magic Power go up the same way (they relate to how much HP/MP you go up). The other stats are based on what you do in battle (Strength goes up from attacking, Intelligence/Wisdom go up based on Black/White magic usage in battle, etc).

After that, you are set for the rest of the game HPwise (about 400+ when you get back from Mysidia). But because of how fast spells gain levels, you might want more MP for some characters. I make Maria my mage (IE: only real healer with the Cure spell), so I get her to ~300MP before Ming=Wu leaves.

Personally, I find the game to be really misunderstood, and actually a good game in the series. At least the WSC/PS versions for the regular game. The bonus part at the end of 2 on the GBA was my favorite thing on that version.

I still wish 3 came out on the Wonderswan Color, or at least just the GBA. The game has no need for a 2nd screen.
