RTTP: Malcolm in the Middle

Thanks to Wandavision lampooning the intro to MITM, they suddenly got interested in the show. They said it looked really weird. When I said it was like a live action The Simpsons, they wanted to watch it.*

It just might be the best damn family comedy ever produced. I remember watching the original run and it was like comfort food. It was guaranteed to get a big laugh out of me at least once per episode.

And now that my girls want to watch it (10 and 12 years old) I get to relive a lot of those hilarious moments. They love the show. They’re binging it right now as we speak.

It’s also one of the few shows that captures the youth culture of the early 2000s in an easily use identifiable way.

*I know it’s not a one-for-one comparison to The Simpsons, but can you name another popular show that even comes close to MITM?

Besides, if you think about it, it does have:

1. an overly precautious mom
2. A weird dad who is also getting into hijinks.
3. A really smart sibling.
4. A prankster sibling with spikey blonde hair.
5. A loveable baby sibling who is actually replaced by a baby.
6. And Francis. I guess Francis can be Moe.

Yeah it’s nothing like the Simpsons, but hey it got my girls to watch it, right?

So, y’all got a favorite episode?

Funniest episode is the rollerskates one. Or anything focused on the Krelboynes or Francis and his military shenanigans lol.

The first few seasons really are a perfect product of its time. I could rewatch the show forever. But I find that Malcom becomes really self centered and whiny and annoying in the later seasons, like he sort of outgrows his genius and cute middle child image.

Apparently Frankie Muniz (Malcolm) had a transient ischemic attack (like a stroke) about 9 years ago and suffered major memory loss. Apparently he doesn't remember being on Malcolm in the Middle. I heard that Bryan Cranston had sat down with him and they re-watched a bunch of episodes together. Maybe to try to get him to remember.

Man, how cool of Cranston to do that for him. Muniz had a budding movie career at the end of Malcolm. It ruined any chance he had at one.

I wonder if they recorded Muniz’s reaction to any of the episodes.

Breaking Bad got me to watch this, years ago. Cranston is amazing in it, along with the entire cast. Honestly it is probably the GOAT show of its type. Modern Family aint got shit on MITM

I always thought it was a 90's show.

It's amazing. I watched it recently and enjoyed it a lot. Great writing, characters and all.

I did, too! My brain made me think it was made in the 90s mostly because of the intro. A “They Might Be Giants” song set to a bunch of random images is totally 90s. The show is 00s for sure though.

Also it is technically not very good, specially the first seasons.

Such an odd thing.

I'm an 80's kid and still feel identified with them.

Hard to pick one episode but Lois’s birthday party where they get in a fight with clowns has to be up there.

Also this moment is a classic.

Loved the show. Saw a few episodes when i was young on tv, but really got into it thanks to my college room mate. He was crazy about it. Binge watched all season with him smoking some crazy good weed.

The fireworks scene, where Malcolm with his brothers fired that nuclear rocket gets a laugh out of me every time!

He's doing well now. Just got married to a beautiful woman, Paige Price, and is expecting a child soon. Good for him.

After going back to the show it's crazy how much more relatable Hal is now that I'm older than when I was younger. They really nailed his character.

The show is genius, I recently watched a few episodes and forgot how good it is, especially early seasons.
