RTTP: Ryan Gosling's "Drive"; the best movie of his career?

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.

I haven't seen Drive since it's release. This was one of those rare movies where I wasn't expecting too much, but was BLOWN away after watching it. A masterpiece imo. Revisited it on blu-ray today with a friend. Still an incredible film. Home-girl loved it too but some of more violent scenes were a bit too much for her, she screamed and covered her eyes @ the
elevator scene
XD

I think this film is Ryan's magnum opus. I really doubt he'll ever make another movie as good as this. From the incredible visuals, to the slow burn story and sparingly used well done action scenes, to the cast (Oscar Isaac <3) to the music. I mean what an amazing soundtrack:

Gosling's swag was just out of control too lmao, dat Scorpion jacket! Amazing film.

What do ya'll think?

I think his career is still pretty young. He hasn't really been in all that many big roles yet. But it's easily the best movie I've seen him in, yeah. People like to talk shit about how quiet he is in the film, but I think it adds a lot to the character. Reminds me of characters from movies like le samourai. Silent but deadly.
The movie is pretty divisive though on these forums, I think. Most seem to love it or hate it. I happen to love it. Just a really well done movie and it just oozes style.

I thought he was good in The Place Beyond the Pines as well. You might like it, although (plot spoiler)
he's only in the movie for the first third or so
.

I saw that in theaters, I thought it was pretty decent, but yeah the movie just falls apart for me after
Gosling is done and it has to focus on Bradley Cooper. No thanks.

Without a doubt his best movie. His acting/character may have been meh, but the movie's style is just so good, closest we'll get to a Hotline Miami movie.

I've only seen him in Drive and Only God Forgives and I much prefer him in the latter.

Stop it. OGF might actually be his worst lol.

Yeah, OP, it's between this and Blue Valentine for me. I may have enjoyed Drive more (BV is depressing as hell) but his performance in both was fantastic.

half nelson is good
the notebook is good
place beyond the pines is good
lars and the real girl is good
fracture is pretty good
crazy stupid love is pretty good
ides of march is pretty good

his best is probably yet to come tbh

I was really impressed with him the first time I saw him, in The Believer.

He plays a self-hating Jew that joins a bunch of Neo Nazis. As a highly intellectual, he struggles with rebelling against his own kind, while holding his heritage a secret for his new Neo-Nazi friends.

It's a dark movie, but he is superb. It really shows the duality of someone who is actually really smart, but is so angry and bitter, that he becomes blinded and goes into all sorts of extreme. While I've never met people who went into the far right, his character reminds me of extremely political activist minded people on the left side, who also starts going towards extreme solutions to solve problems.

You guys haven't seen Place Beyond The Pines have you?

Yes two of us already mentioned we did a few posts up. Pines was decent but nothing special, a solid 6.5/10 for me. Drive was a 10.

The Notebook.

I hated The Notebook. I know it was the movie that put Gosling on the map, and I love Rachel McAdams, but what a snooze-fest of a film. The cinematography was amateur, the plot could have worked if the leads had any chemistry which they didn't. I know Ryan and Rachel were a couple in real life but there were lots of stories of them hating eachother on set which might explain the lack of chemistry as both are usually pretty good actors.

Easily! Its a stunning film. Very few actors have the screen presence of Gosling. I just hope he does not screw up his career with stupid movie choices that he is been guilty of lately. One of my favorite films of all time.

I'm a big fan of Drive, but there is one thing I never understood...didn't the driver pretty much fuck over the two robbers that he drove in the opening sequence? How were they supposed to get out of the parking garage with a couple of duffle bags when the area was swarming with cops? And isn't his "I'm yours for five minutes and that's it" rule kind of dumb for a getaway driver? He's just going to bail as soon as his time is up? If I'm hiring a getaway driver, I'd tell him the job isn't over until he "gets me away."

But I love the look, the vibe, the performances of the movie. I saw it on Netflix, and bought the blu-ray.

I think the 5 minutes is to protect himself from getting caught.

They could have left the bags and made it out, their choice!!

Gosling plays a really good insane person in The Place Beyond the Pines.
The part he was in
was easily the best section of the movie.

Thought that movie was absolute crap. Need to watch it again I guess.

The "hot guy who never talks" thing doesn't do it for me as far as his acting performance goes.

One thing I particulary liked is the way the movie played against expectations.
The driver starts the movie as a traditional, quiet, likeable hero who will maybe win the girl from the nasty convict husband, but when he threatened to kick that one guy's teeth down his throat, I immediately started reassessing him. And when Standard had a welcome home from prison party and admitted to all his friends and loved ones, "It was a shameful thing I did," I starting thinking, maybe he's not such a bad guy.

It's a great film, watched it for the first time a few months back.

Only thing I knew about it was that it was a 'cult film' and had top visuals.

Man did not know how violent it was going to be, I was a little taken aback at some parts.

Awesome film overall though, well except the somewhat cliche single mother with kid thing.

Pines is better than Drive. Fact. You could probably make an argument for Lars and the Real GIrl as well.

Drive cemented his "indie Ken doll" thing.

I actually want to see him display a range of emotions rather than "mysterious gaze".

He did more with a place beyond the pines but I'd like to see him play a villain.

Drive was overhyped for me. I liked it, but it didn't blow me away like it maybe would have if I'd went in cold.

I prefer Half Nelson. It's really solid.

A place beyond the pines spoilers(ish)

Uh-huh. This isn't a villain? I know you mentioned A Place Beyond the Pines, but did you actually watch it? Dudes a fucking psycho.
