Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' opens to a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes

Glad to see it - loved both trailers, been keenly waiting for it!

Hopefully seeing it after Easter weekend.

$30? no thanks
I'm curious how well the "expand to imax" stuff will do. Didn't Dark Knight do that way back when? I've seen it on some TV shows and it is an interesting technique.

I doubt we will ever see dual formats (full aspect imax and then a 'normal' theater ratio) for more cg effects heavy stuff because it must be a lot of work rendering stuff that's normally in the matte area. Im all down for normal8zing imax screens though, make going to the theater a real experience. My TV and sound system at home is almost the equivalent to a normal theater, so I want to extra oomph of imax. Don't like the tight vertical rows of a classic imax though, I'm too used to the lounge chairs, so it's a tough balancing act for theaters.

Far cry from when I used to watch indie stuff in strip mall store fronts on folding chairs and a 16mm print with a mono mix. Damn, those were the days. Get us back to those grand elaborate theaters. Of course fewer and fewer directors know how to make stuff for that format these days.

I don't know if it's the same thing as you've mentioned here, but Sony and Disney do imax enhanced versions of their films on their respective streaming services, mainly marvel in Disney's case. The films change between 16:9 and 1.43:1 for certain scenes if you choose the imax version.

3.5/5 for French critics. Usually pretty reliable.
That makes me think that the super high RT score is very much marketing/hype based.
Looks ok but nothing particularly amazing.
That's a pass from me.

I dunno, a 3.5 is pretty good. What worries me about this film are reports of dull, kinda boring vampires. THAT'S where the draw is in these films (for me). A lot of family drama with a sugar coat of bloodsuckers doesn't really interest me nearly as much as a film with a lot more genre aspects dealing with vamps.

The Tommy gun scene gives me hope that the film hits plenty of 50s gangster film genre tropes so the vampires are only a part of the appeal.

WARFARE gave me a hell of a fix of M4, SAW, and 25 mike-mike with a great sound mix, so we'll see if this film can compete. I want some 1700's aristocratic poof vamp used to cap and ball firearms to walk right into a face full of drum fed .45ACP goodness...screw crosses and holy water :P

Yeah, my initial excitement is doing a 180. I'm sure it'll be good but... I don't know maybe not for me. I didn't even watch Nosferatu at all. I watched Longlegs at the theater because of the hype, it was ok to me.

I only watched two movies last year at the theaters: Longlegs and Nosferatu. Loved them both

This year I'm not going to the theater at all. I'm just waiting on streaming for all the movies now

I just don't get the time nor the inclination to go to the cinema these days. There's an Imax opened a while ago just up the road from me and I have still not had the chance to check it out yet. Was hoping to catch Warfare in there but alas I'm away from home for a while.

Off the top of my head I watched Oddity and Longlegs maybe 1 or 2 more but I don't remember. I'm definitely catching Bring Her Back at the theater

For me it's just I was never a theater person and with how modern theater experience is nowadays, yeah no thanks

The cinema is still king for me. It's 2 hours with no web surfing, pausing to make popcorn, getting interrupted by the kids, getting bored and changing the channel. I give the film 100% attention even it doesn't "deserve" it.

At home even an engrossing film is hard to finish in one sitting. I can rarely have the sound cranked or all the lights off to really enjoy it, so lots of good films come off as mid films and mid films are just trash. I know my system is good because classic films still hit when I watch them, but lots of newer stuff just feels....meh.

Have my tickets preordered! Can't to wait to watch this.

3-4 years ago I made a resolution to only see original, riskier, auteur driven films in the theater. No more Marvel or DC or Jurassic Park or any of that stuff, but films that actually take risks and try to do something new or tell a story that the creators are passionate about. Only exceptions are the occasional kids movies that my daughter wants to see.

I've stuck to that and my movie-going experience has been so, so much better since.

I feel the same.

we have 2 within about 5 miles of each other and the problem is they are filled with assholes. The younger generation now does not respect the cinemas at all, constant phones / talking / shouting / throwing candy the entire time I was watching the alien romulous last year. Despite complaining about it afterwards the staff just said they can't do anything about it.

I don't know that I would consider Coogler an auteur director. He's done what, one Creed film and two Marvel films after his indie breakout? I don't know that he has a style that I would recognize like I would Tarantino. But he's young so hopefully he continues to develop and moves away from CG heavy stuff (which maybe Sinners is like that).

I watched and loved it and can't wait to watch again.

I can see why some people might not like it that much if all they wanted to see was vampires, scares, and kills.

However, it is indeed a horror film, but it's also so much more, and it added so much texture to everything.

I watched this tonight and thought it was great, definitely check it out if you get the chance.

Also, there are both mid and post-credits scenes. They're both worth sticking around for, but the mid-credits one is especially worth waiting for.

I thought the mid-credits scene...
could set up a sequel or TV series set in the 90s with hip-hop, contemporary R&B, and alternative rock

I saw it yesterday, the first third really went a little too hard on detail with no real purpose (given the ending) and could have been more tightly edited imo.

Having said that I did enjoy it. That scene were Mary was walking back into the mill and the background scene unfolded was really well done. As well as the tension building on what is one of the old vampire tropes.

I didn't get the next morning arrival though?

Did the white guy turn up because he knew something was going down in the night and he was on cleanup to run the same scam - or was it just the klan intending to run them out the business and it was just coincidence?

The head vampire guy tells them that he knows that the Klan, led by the guy they bought the property from, are coming to kill them the next day. They took their money but don't actually want them around.

Looks really really fucking good and the added supernatural stuff is just the icing on the cake, can't wait to see this

Just got back from this - it's fantastic, it is definitely not From Dusk Till Dawn. Closer to drama than a straight horror, character driven and takes it's time telling the story.

I watched this last night - finally, another good vampire movie. I have minor nitpicks, but overall, it was very well done. Great epilogue too.

Watched in IMAX, great movie, definitely from dusk till dawn vibes, it hits you with that same "woah" moment if you're unaware of anything, as I was, though here it happens a bit earlier in the story.

Watched the trailer afterwards and of course it's just a stupid as fuck spoiler reel that shouldn't exist or anyone should watch.

Don't watch trailers.

I know I'm in the minority. I thought the movie was OK. I guess it was expectations. I wanted a good vampire movie with action and cool characters. I got another Koogler black-drama, racism with a strong lead, but trying to shoehorn the black culture drama to supernatural just didn't work for me when the climax and conclusion was rushed and lame (my opinion). I actually think the first hour was the best part of the movie, up until the great music scene. After the bad guys show up I felt the movie just didn't work.

Without having watched it yet I know it's not better than The Witch, Hereditary or Pearl and none of those actors are as good as Toni Collette or Mia Goth.
None of those movies did anything different or new in the genre. All amazing but at the end of the day... generic.

A standard horror movie is NEVER going to win, no matter how good it is.

This is a musical drama character piece horror vampire movie. I guarantee there will be some oscar buzz.

Based on the trailers it doesn't seem like a pure horror experience, but a sort of horror adjacent film. There have been plenty of horror adjacent films that have won Oscars in the past, like Get Out or Silence of the Lambs, both of which blend genres.

So if it is really that good, it wouldn't surprise me if it gets nominated for something.

I see your point about Oscar buzz but you couldn't be more wrong about the films I listed as being generic especially The Witch. I'm all ears though what movies did each of those films copy?

I'd only seen the first trailer before watching this. The second trailer in the OP has so many spoilers I'm surprised they decided to run it.
