RTTP: Ryan Gosling's "Drive"; the best movie of his career?

I had a first exposure similar to the OP. Plans fell through one night in its first or second weekend and I say it on a whim, knowing nothing about it.

One of my favorite films of the recent past, film oozes style like others have said, but I realize that it can be polarizing for many.

I almost bought that damn replica jacket when someone made a thread about it on GAF.

I actually loved the cinematography of this film.

Saw it with a handful of people in the theaters way back when and they could not have complained more though.

Without a doubt his best movie. His acting/character may have been meh, but the movie's style is just so good, closest we'll get to a Hotline Miami movie.

I made this connection immediately. Definitely made me love the movie.

Ok, it's been mentioned a few times, I have to ask...

What's Hotline Miami?

I almost bought that damn replica jacket when someone made a thread about it on GAF.

XD I'm glad you didn't. I remember seeing some real life pics of people wearing the jacket..... Awkward. Looks great in the movie though.

A place beyond the pines spoilers(ish)

Uh-huh. This isn't a villain? I know you mentioned A Place Beyond the Pines, but did you actually watch it? Dudes a fucking psycho.

I thought this might come up.

I don't really consider his character a villain in that movie. A big part of that is how obviously scared he is of robbing the bank. From the way he beats himself on the head before he begins, the way his voice cracks when he's giving orders to the bank staff to the way he throws up at the end. He's doing something desperate. He's smart enough to do it but he wouldn't be robbing a bank in the first place if he didn't have certain motivations.

u sound ignant

The Place Beyond the Pines >>>>>>>>>>>>> Drive

That's a good one, too. I liked both around the same, but TPBtP maybe a hair more.

He's good in most things. The Notebook was pretty good for its genre, The Ides of March was pretty good, and so was Fracture.

half nelson is good
the notebook is good
place beyond the pines is good
lars and the real girl is good
fracture is pretty good
crazy stupid love is pretty good
ides of march is pretty good

his best is probably yet to come tbh

The Notebook is absolutely terrible. It's quite literally the worst romance movie I've ever watched.

I find it to be the most memorable. Is it his best example of acting quality? No, probably not.
I can understand why people would not enjoy it, especially if the retro style is not their thing. For me, it was perfect. Like GTA the movie almost. The villains and action scenes are just so damn memorable and gruesome.

Can't identify with a lot of the movie's popular criticisms. Especially with "A real hero." The song has more lyrics than what everyone likes to joke about for whatever reason.

Drive

Blue Valentine

These movies are some of his best works, I have still yet to see that movie with him directed by George Clooney will check it out one of these days. Blue Valentine is very good film.

APBtP Spoilers
Robbing the bank wasn’t the only time he acted like that, though. He also threatened to kill his boss by sticking a gun in his mouth while he was asleep, and stabbed his ex’s boyfriend in the face with a screwdriver, while he was in their house.

I'll be different and say United States of Leland is also a pretty great movie he is in. Better than Drive in my opinion. He plays a similarly disturbed dude but the movie doesn't drag its feet like Drive does.

I think I need to watch the movie again lol.

Don't recall any of that.

Drive's probably his best film imo, but his best performance is either Blue Valentine, or Lars and the Real Girl, he's really understated in the latter.

Anyone seen Lost River (I preferred the original title How to Catch a Monster). His directorial debut. Not out in the UK got another couple of months.

Of the Ryan Gosling movies I've seen, I'd rank 'em:

Drive
Blue Valentine
Half Nelson
The Place Beyond the Pines
Lars and the Real Girl
Fracture
The Notebook

I love the top five, though. He's great. And dreamy!

Anyway, I've added Only God Forgives to my Netflix queue. I heard it's not great, but we'll see!
