Rumor: Guerrilla Games next project is a multiplayer Horizon game, different from NCSoft MMO

Jason Schreier:
Just to clear up some confusion I've seen, the newly announced NCSoft Horizon MMO is different from the multiplayer Horizon game that's in development at Guerrilla Games. That one is Guerrilla's next big project.

Horizon game where you don't have to care about story or its boring characters and dialogue actually doesn't sound that bad as a concept. Combat was the best part of the series after all.

Larian and CDPR are examples of good European studios with character and personality. Why can't Guerrilla be one of them instead of being so bland and boring?

Give us AAA Ark: Survival Evolved and we all make billions.

Yes, I now talk about PlayStation Live Service like sports fans talk about "their" team.

Yeah I agree. The world is cool and fighting the mechs is fun.
It's the boring story, awful characters, gps based open world design and generic open world padding that hold it back.

A game that's more gameplay focused where you go fight dino mechs with friends on nice Decima graphics actually sounds like it cool be fun

I lost all faith in the studio after Horizon 2 sucked.

Now that they are making a MMO they are even worse. Eww. Man Sony has went to shit. Who even cares if their games are day and date anymore. What games?

Welp that just dashed my one remaining means of rationalizing this strategy of theirs.

I had just thought, if the NCSoft and GG games were basically the same (with maybe some slight gameplay differences, different graphics, maybe some different characters) but GG were focused on the PS5 version while NCSoft focused on mobile & PC, THEN I could understand the NCSoft game skipping PS5. As in that scenario, the GG game would effectively be the same title, just different in some ways. Maybe think of some older SNES/Genesis multiplats with differences like Sparkster or Rondo of Blood/Dracula X (the latter as a more extreme example).

But it sounds like the GG title is fundamentally different at a root level, so these are effectively two very different games at their core, let alone in other areas. So, I'm back to the original question: why is the NCSoft game skipping PS5? Would it have been better to give the NCSoft game a more anime aesthetic, to scale back the parallels between it and GG's GAAS? Or is GG's game going for that Sea of Thieves style the leaked screenshots suggested? Are the two games going to be aesthetically similar, and GG don't want competition for their Horizon game on PS5 (e.g, maybe NCSoft's version turns out to be more popular on the console which embarrasses GG and Herman Hulst)?

The perception problem wouldn't even exist if SIE hadn't already spent five years porting like 95% of their releases between 2017 - 2024 to Windows PC platforms like Steam, but they did. So here we are :/

So that's why the NCsoft game didn't look like that early leak from Horizon's MP we saw years ago:

Doesn't make much sense to make 2 MP projects from that saga in a row but we'll see

Never forget Lego Horizon Adventures.

The flop that flopped so hard nobody even knew it flopped. The game that flopped so hard even flop trackers weren't tracking it. Someone thought that was a good idea. I'd rather play a tencent horizon game than anything from GG as long as I can remember. Never forget how hard mentally Horizon 2 was to make it thru and how you had to struggle to keep going before you quit at the beginning and still detest it to this day.

Also remember how hard it is to make a MMO good luck GG Horizon MMO fans. Remember how many resources. Surely this won't destroy the studio.

Hermen, what are you doing mate?

I don't quite get this multi strategy push around Horizons IP. Isn't there an Amazon show as well or something? Is it that successful to keep throwing likes of money onto this thing?

Man, someone really needs to take back control of Sony's first-party studios. I don't even know how much influence Hermen Hulst has on this, but this totally feels like his kind of decision, he's basically our Phil Spencer when it comes to screwing things up.

Who the hell cares about MMOs these days, and who's gonna care in the next generation?

Why not work on a new single-player IP, or at least something with optional multiplayer? Why not get Guerrilla a license for something like Insomniac got with Spider-Man and Wolverine, I dunno, Jurassic Park, Terminator, Avatar, whatever. Anything would be better than forcing them to make an MMO, and again, in the same damn Horizon universe that's already getting stale.

The show concept failed for one reason or another (could've been drama with the showrunner, could've also been the Horizon 2077 idea was dumb), so now they're adapting Horizon into a movie..

It's by far their best IP in terms of broad appeal potential. It looks great in commercials and on posters.

You go up to any gamer and say "Open world action game with cool robot dinos" and basically everyone is a degree of interested.

People generally overvalue the importance of the quality of the first 2 games. They're trying to create their Star Wars.

We need to finish the fucking story it's on Act 3 and they're just going to create a full on MMO in between? What are they thinking?

THIS IS THE DUMBEST THING OF ALL-TIME!!! Why make 2 Horizon Live Service games, where only one of them is on PS5?

Guerrilla Games is like the viper in the Bible.

At first, you felt sorry for them because the Killzone franchise wasn't selling well, especially after their efforts with Killzone 2 on PS3.

You helped them because they were sympathetic.

But when you gave them the money, they grabbed your arm and slowly began to destroy PlayStation.

The same thing is happening with that company now.
