Im glad to see Okami 2 greenlighted, but its a shame to hear Platinum Games is struggling again, im a fan of theirs ,Bayonetta,Astral Chain and Metal Gear Rising are very special games to me

I hope somehow they recover, i think we will see in the coming years, until we have a clear picture whats going on,i don't believe they will simply land on the Babylon's Fall trap again

1. They tried Sony, Sony refused.
2. Kamiya is back at Capcom and reopened Clover studios. I'm praying for a new Viewtiful Joe.
Kamiya is not back at Capcom. He is still independent and is working with them on Okami 2. He didn't reopen Clover , he set up CLOVERS Inc.

I don’t like to see studios get shut down. But clearly something has gone horribly wrong with how the studio is being managed. I hope most of them get out before the ship sinks.
The people make the studio, not the other way around. If some of the devs move elsewhere (like Capcom or Clovers) and the party who was sinking the ship is left on that sinking ship, I’m not seeing the problem here.

It reminds me of that story earlier this year in which there was a dev studio (forgot the name) where all of the devs left the studio in solidarity after their CEO made a really shady, greedy move.

I hope that more good smaller devs are sniffing out BS before it happens and they find ways to save themselves.

Problem is that not everyone has the luxury to just up and leave a job. There will inevitably be casualties.

That was Annapurna Interactive I believe. Difference there was the people that left did it in solidarity.

You’re right and I’m hoping that the rest of what’s left at Platinum, besides the responsible party, manages to make some connection back to their former co-workers.

It surprises me it took this long. I love their games but the Microsft debacle was a clear sign of mismanagement

smh, hate the say I told ya so on this one but.......yea

I've been saying for years this team is on shaky ground and waaay too much misses then hits. Its like the team took on so much fucking licensed projects, had games cancelled, got removed from other games and a whole host of shit...

BABYLON'S FALL lol

This is why I told people years ago, I side with MS with stopping that one Dragon game. I mean shit, many of you know I don't care for the publisher, but I can also remain objective, if i feel the reason they stopped that game is for a just reason, I'm more likely to side with that and what I've seen from this team over the years supports that maybe it indeed was their fault regarding sloppy development vs MS or something.

I don't want them to close down, but maybe they need to dial that shit back and fully focus on quality of their projects instead of just trying to take on all contracts or something.

They haven't made a single good game in their entire history. Shut down and reconfigure into something better

I dunno. I was really disappointed by it. The whole kaiju mechanic thing was really unsatisfying. Bayo 3 felt like such a downgrade from the previous titles.

I’ve seen that sentiment around the fanbase and I respect it. Bayo 3 being on low end hardware really hurt it and the Kaiju thing could have been done better, but I still thought the gameplay was great and I had a blast with the levels. It’s a flawed game that I enjoyed a lot, not unlike the conclusion of another trilogy on the Switch with No More Heroes.

Platinum was diluted from the beginning. They couldn't take everyone from Capcom and the results were games which were good but no where near as good as their Capcom counterparts. Ever since they've just been diluted more and more over the years with people leaving and forming even more watered down studios (Tango, M-two, Unseen and now Clovers.) Personally I'm not that hyped for Clovers like I was for Platinum as there really isn't the talent out there, and worse of all, Japanese games have started to abandon the unique fundamentals they were built on and lean more heavily into cinematic games and RPGs because that's what western audiences want.

They didn't close only because Nintendo picked them up. Because they ran around offering their games and Bayonetta (Microsoft, Sony) and everyone except Nintendo, refused them (Nintendo ended up giving them funding, bought the rights to Bayonetta from them. Now part of the IP belongs to Sega and part to Nintendo, Platinum no longer owns it), they weren't interesting to anyone.
That's why they still work only thanks to Nintendo =)
I find the dual IP ownership of Bayonetta so strange. If Sega wanted to make a Bayonetta game, do they have the right to do so?

sadly theyre cooked. i hope Kamiya’s new studio works on a new Bayonetta with Nintendo/Sega. And I hope he gives Hashimoto a job too. Bayo 2 is underrated.

A studio who on paper sounds like should be successful making action games like Bayonetta, 101, MG, Vanquish etc... unless their costs structure is a lot more than the revenue reaped in making these kinds of games

One of those solid AA studios.

Stick to your formula PG. No more games like Babylons Fall or other games out of your league and experience.

Bayo 2 wasn't all that great either to be honest. Bayonetta 3 seemed like they wanted to just tear the whole thing down on purpose with all the bone headed moves they made with it.

The eastern market is shifting, it's gatcha's trend and other open world GTA's likeness with Anime style characters. Trads eastern games are numbered.

Maybe start releasing games on PC and PS5.

The vast majority of their games are on "traditional" home consoles and PC.
Only the Nintendo funded games are Nintendo only.

Did their Pacific Rim-esc game fall through.
Cuz I totally even forgot about this game, ida thunk by now we would have a gameplay trailer atleast.

Didn't you read the replies? There is no dual ownership. How can you guys not understand this?

IP ownership = Sega
Bayo 2 & 3 publishing and copyrights belong to Nintendo.

If Sega wants to make a Bayonetta 2 and 3 they can as long as it isn't the same as Bayonetta 2 and 3 that Nintendo owns. It's like how US Gold made Strider 2 back in the days and Capcom later down the years made a Strider 2 of their own but they shared nothing other than the main character.

Guessing that Bayonetta 3 was supposed to release on Switch 2 hardware and when those plans fell through they had to pivot to Cereza and scale down Bayo3. Didn't care for Cereza and seems crazy asking $60, as if they sent it out to die.

Love their games and admire them for attempting to push the boundaries of what we expect from a game. Sad they couldn't make it work.

Tô be honest, I'm surprised they are still open after so many successive failures. Not every studio can afford more than one failure, let alone multiple.

I believe it's dead, Jim.

Also they announced 10 retro themed games, out of which only 1 actually released, so that's probably cancelled too.

Tears of Nintendo
It's time for Capcom to bring some people back to help with development etc. Better this than nothing and slow death under some indie studio with no money.

Nintendo paid the bills for that game. Gamers chose to skip it.

Because the audience for bayonetta isn't on nintendo platforms. Trying to sell M rated games on a platform known for kids games is bound to fail and fail they have. The market for bayonetta is on playstation, xbox, and pc.

They've had a lot of cancelled projects over the years. A failed partnership with Microsoft, a failed partnership with Cygames, a failed partnership with Square Enix. Plenty of unannounced projects have been cancelled. The company has been poorly managed for a long time, it should be clear as day now. Atushi Inaba running the company into the ground. It's over. I was actually looking forward to those arcade games.

Wait, give me Metal Gear Revengeance 2 before dissolving
Konami would still be able to hire any mercenary developer of action games - namely the Team Ninja - to develop a new Rising, they don't need this empty shell of what once was PlatinumGames.

But what I'd love is for Konami to find another partner, the right partner, to see the original vision for what was once known as Metal Gear Solid: Rising through. The scripts are done, canon and fucking awesome, filling the gaps regarding Raiden's transformation from his MGS2 self into the badass we see in MGS4, in what I'd say would have been the darkest, most heart-wrenching MGS story to date.

I don't know who would be up to such task though, as that game would require a super talented developer both in the technology and gameplay fronts. Sucker Punch would be a great fit, but no way Sony would waste the time of one of its best studios on an IP they don't own and doesn't have over 10M lifetime sales potential.

They surely had to scale down Bayonetta 3 to fit their gameplay design ambitions , but it was always meant to be released on the Switch, it was one of the first major announcements ,most likely greenlighted just before the hardware released.

I assumed after playing Bayonetta 3 that this was an early work and Platinum would be working a more polished version for Switch 2.
No idea if thats still the plan but i hope so,Bayonetta 3 looks rough but there is a good game in there that deserves another chance with polished visuals ,framerate and lightning

Bayonetta Origins of course had even less recognition, but its a gem ,cool art, story and fun combat, they had an interesting concept and executed it well
