Rumor: Titanfall also 720p?

The question is...does it really matter?
Unfortunately, this game also has an Xbox 360 version. If 720p doesn't matter, why even bother with an Xbox One version? The promise of the current generation of consoles was "True HD Gaming". And, for the most past, it actually failed to deliver. If the next generation of consoles, one with a US$499.00 price tage, can't even deliver on the promises of the previous generation, why are these things even being made?

720p should be reserved for games pushing these consoles to the utter extreme limits of it's unlocked capacity - a true tech demo game that makes everyone go "ooooow". It should not, however, be the standard for cross-generational launch titles built for a US$499.00 console on a seven year old engine in the year 2013.
We've had one entire generation of "kinda-sorta-but-not-really-HD". We're paying a good deal of money to get out of it. It, frankly, does matter.

It's getting out of hand!

Resolution anxieties are infiltrating all Xbox One talk!

I'd like to be excited about next gen- it's slowly dwindling!

But if Titanfall is truly 720p on XBO, and it's 720p on 360, and it's whatever you want it be on PC, who's going to buy an XBO for this game?

If people start saying "oh Titanfall looks great, I think I'll buy an XBO" to their friends, their more hardcore friends (even if it's only 1 friend) who have gone with Sony will give them the skinny and they'll say, "wait for the PS4 version or get it on PC or just get it on 360".

In what world do you two live in where resolution is the end all be all of graphical fidelity? It sounds like you two are equating the X1 and 360 version visuals.

Holy shit man I LOVE THIS

Seriously how can you watch something like that, know it is 1080p x 60fps MP, increased fidelity @ 30fps SP and not just flip your ship knowing fucking Call of Duty Ghosts will not hit 1080p on a brand new next-gen console?

As a PC gamer, I find this shit to be hilarious.

MS dun goof'd

It shouldn't be hilarious to anyone, even PC gamers, because your console-to-PC ports will be just as held back by lesser console hardware. Yeah you can turn up graphical effects, but the scope of the basic game design will be gimped to accommodate already aged console hardware specs.

Being excited for next gen does not require one to be excited for the Xbone.

Oh, I know- it's just tonight has been a really entertaining mess.

I feel bad- all the sidestepping, lack of confirmation, wild speculation! Another blow to the system.

I'm going to PS4- this is not a secret. But I'd like in time to pick up both- Dead Rising 3 looks awesome. This 720p issue is worrying; not just for these launch titles, but for other multiplatform titles down the road.

I was fortunate enough to have both a PS3 & 360 for the past couple years. It was a beautiful thing, juggling between exclusives and attempting to pick which platform to play a title on- whether by performance or controller preference. The cynicism associated with the mixed messages of the XBO campaign has been maddening!

But even when Titanfall was announced, I figured the place to play it would be on PC. We shall see, indeed!

Not if the lead dev platform is PS4.

Ok you can't have it both ways. You can't go off on an argument that casuals don't care about resolution which then I counter with "then they should be happy with the 360 version" then come back and say "resolution is not the end all be all of graphical fidelity". I thought we were talking about casuals. THEY DON'T CARE. That's why Titanfall is not a system seller for XBO. It will be available on the 360 and they simply don't care about a marginal graphics difference.

If they don't care that the game doesn't match their TV resolution, they probably don't care about missing graphical bells and whistles.

I plan on buying TitanFall for the gameplay, not the 1080p.

Wonder if I'm in the minority when I think gameplay matters more than a slightly higher resolution? People are acting like all the sudden this game plays like crap because of this.

It makes no sense.

If only it were possible to do both and having gaming nirvana..

You act as if the X1 isn't even an upgrade when compared to the 360.

1. That was my first post in this thread.

2. The difference between the 360 and X1 versions I'm sure will be more than "marginal". You can't equate resolution to stuff like particles, textures, and the like, especially when the difference will likely be a great.

MS is fucking up on the easiest/most essential selling skill of all. Point out benefits to the consumer. If your product lacks this you wow them with this over here. Tell them how everything other than what it is their lacking will benefit them and beneficial to them as a buyer.

So insane they aren't pulling out all the stops right now. If they have any big exclusives in the works for a year or two down the road, now would be the time to talk about them.

They still don't have anybody running the Xbox division, right?

You act as if the X1 isn't even an upgrade when compared to the 360.

No, it's definitely an upgrade, but not enough of one. That was my point. XBO is "lesser" console hardware for next gen. Sorry Wii-U, but you're not even in the equation of next-gen multiplatform game design. (even though I still want one for Nintendo-developed games)

Wow the negatives just keep on coming for the XBO. I was so hyped and had both consoles preordered. If this is all true, i'm cancelling the XBO and investing in a PC for gaming. It's funny when they push that true HD crap all in my face with thier advertisment but commit blunders after blunters..

no. most of 360 games run at 880x720. xbone could do 900p or 720p. PC Gafers want 1080p

People who have owned a TV display (of a technology that is designed to work best with native resolutions) of 1920x1080 pixels for many years finally want a game console to provide pixel matched graphics. It's definitely time. But I guess that's just PC Gafers...

Are you honestly going to tell me that 7 years after the launch of the Xbox 360 at 720p that you EXPECTED to see games on the next gen console at 720p?

Yeah the visuals are better, but they should be better AND at 1080p. Like the competition IS PROVIDING.

Penello Log

Man these threads crack me up. Well done on the Nickelback gif.

I'm not going to convince anyone differently, but it's funny how people interpret the tweet as confirmation.

First - I don't know the resolution. I don't have more sophisticated tools than anyone else. I watch the game on a nice TV with the XBO set to 1080p for every game, there is no way for me to know what's native vs. upscaled unless I'm told.

Second, if I did know, it wouldn't be my place to say anything.

If the Ryse footage last week showed me anything, it's that you get a much more interesting discussion when you're looking at real footage.

So now I've seen the PS4 footage, and I've seen XBO running live. To me, they both look great.

The resolution will be what it will be. It will be known when Activision wants it to be known. The only thing I was curious about was if the games look different, and based on the assets available to me, they don't.

So I think when XBO footage comes out, and people can compare resolutions, effects, framerate and other things the debate will be more interesting.

All that doesn't come across in Twitter-sized bites.

and then after being called out for not being able to see the difference with his naked eye.

Look, I get some people claim such amazing eyesight as to be able to instantly distinguish native vs. upscaled when you're in a room watching and enjoying a game demo, despite the fact that it requires normal people access to a direct feed screenshot with very particular sections zoomed up 8x to pixel count, while also making sure you're accounting for other intentional environmental effects that may blur or otherwise impact the image.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=680289&highlight=pixel+counting

But hey, if you're saying you can tell the difference with enough accuracy to make a public disclosure about it, just by watching someone play the game, then I say wow.

I've seen a bunch of other 3rd party games running at various times, and I can't tell you the *native* resolutions of those either.

So me, I'm not making that claim. I'm sorry if you think that's a job requirement.

So this thread exists because one giant circle jerk thread is just not enough?

yea basically, I think the other thread was getting so full that too many posts were being overlooked so they wanted a parallel thread.

This whole situation is going to be a nightmare scenario. We've already heard reports that it's going to be way easier to make the game run on PS4. Instead of optimizing the game to run and look better on PS4, third-party developers are going to be spending their time trying to get the Xbox One version running at at least 30fps and at least 720p.

Unless the One tanks at retail in NA, third parties probably look at it as a safe bet. If the PS4 outsells the one, then that mentality might shift. The nightmare scenario is that not only are devs going to be spending more time trying to get the One version running at a basic acceptable performance level they are going to ignore optimizing the PS4 and even the PC versions until they can. If you are a PC gamer, it's probably horrifying.

Games are going to be intentionally gimped if the One sells really well in NA.

So that means you own every console out there including PC, so this news doesn't matter to you because you will simply buy the games (including Titanfall) on the superior platform?

Your arguments are petty and pointless. The question is; does the game look and play well enough on the platform of your choice so that you are happy with your purchase.

I think they'll get it up to 900p. CBOAT basically said 720p-900p will be the norm due to the 32MB size of the ESRAM being perfect for those resolutions.

ineva metnioned forz.a notbe 1080-p, they s

houcld make it. But, excption not rhthe rule tho:ug.jh. thru this genm, never mind try tomatch eyecandyi. n thx to esram 720 to900 wilb e nte norm on xone

y1ou watch

you jes watchh

man ):

So both cboat and famousmortimer agree on this, pretty substantial stuff. Sure, they still have time to up the resolution but this leaks are making it sound unlikely.

Wasn't going to get a Xbox One for Titanfall anyway. Knowing that my 1 year wait will probably turn out in a more polished version makes it way easier though.

Huh? What platform of choice? I was responding to the guy who specifically said he buys gaming platforms for games and not pixels. Unless he's a gamer who only likes a specific segment of games from a specific company...I'm personally a PC, 3DS, Vita, PS3, 360, and Wii gamer from this gen. But I guess that means I only shop for dem pixels and not dem games.

A gamer buys them all. Should I give Microsoft a free pass on attempting to charge $500 for a weaker system? I mean I've bought every other Xbox system they've made, does that not make me a valid consumer who can air his grievances with their company's direction?

First party studio that's always pushed graphics and that's had its hands on the hardware since it came into being versus third party studio that has prioritized 60 fps over looks and likely got the hardware relatively late?

Then why are you buying an Xbone again ?

(I assume you are btw)

We arl rdaedy know.
Titfall also.

translaperncy is berter when dealing wtih this positition. whataev er tho

Is this a Google translation of something that was written in an ancient dialect?

The reason is because this is the highest profile Xbone game, the one game that MS have trumpeted as proof of the performance of the Xbone. The fact that the game is running on the ancient Source engine and can only match current gen resolution is a huge red flag for the power of the console, with long term implication for multi-plats on the MS console.

Plus MS has been doing a massive PR push to claim the power difference between the Xbone and PS4 is minimal. Using all manor of dubious reasoning to back up their claims.

Xbox One Big Exclusives at launch/Q1:

Forza - 1080p 60 FPS
Ryse - 900p (?) FPS
Titanfall - 720p 60 FPS Locked

PS4 Big Exclusives at launch/Q1:

Killzone - 1080p 30 FPS singleplayer, 1080p 60 FPS 'most of the time' (?) multiplayer
Driveclub - 1080p 30 FPS. Delayed.
inFamous 2nd Son - 1080p (?) FPS

(There are others ofc, but these are really the graphical showcases)

PS4 is delivering more 1080p titles, but it seems like XB1 is bringing it when it comes to FPS. It feels like Sony WWS has a mandate that all their games must run at 1080p no matter what (What exactly is a racing sim like Driveclub doing at 30 FPS anyway?), whereas MS is giving devs more freedom and we are seeing more consistent 60 FPS exclusive titles so far. PS4 is more powerful going by specs, but I wouldn't honestly believe it just by going off of the exclusives. Sim games are the pinnacle of tech demos as they emphasize photorealism and are least influenced by art style, and Forza just wipes the floor when it comes to Driveclub. Everyone I have showed it to tells me Forza looks much better, and it is running at a better FPS and resolution to boot.
