He honestly shouldn't be allowed the dignity of "retiring". He should be casually fired just like the other 9,000 people that were fired today.

The damage this guy has done.
I think that's unfair. He cut and cut until Xbox was profitable, sold Nadella on Game Pass and Cloud to get the funding to grow Xbox internal development, and pretty much saved the brand for a while. He's ultimately failing due to mismanagement, but it wasn't all bad.

Jokes on you fuckers- there never will be another console so he never has to leave.

Where has GamePass and all that funding got them?

The Xbox 360 is still their best console they have released and they have never got close to that on his waych.

Despite many, many, many years of promises.

Besides windows(which is successful but shit) and azure, everything they touch goes to shit.
Let's poor one out for Nokia.
As a Finn, and as much as I detest that rodent Elop, Nokia was already on the way out. They very likely would have died (as a mobile phone company, they are still active in the network side of things) regardless. It was due to management stuck in their ways and having absolutely no (viable) vision for the future.

...which, come to think of it, is not that different from MS I guess.

He should go away right now, before more damage is done. The Xbox division suffered a insustanable growth under his leadership.

During the 360 era, they could not own a lot of studios, but the ones they had gave profit and allowed the division to steadily grow under their exclusives. And Gamepass, despite being a good thing for their consumers, it's unable to be sustainable for the shit ton of studios they have right now under their wing.

Imagine Bond or Booty taking his place.

People always say it can't get any worse, but... can it?
you can replace him with steve jobs if you like, his successor is doomed in any case. he made the bed
that 1K+ neither console nor pc frankenstein will do catastrophically worse then series and gamepiss will continue to be a bottemless pit.

It would make sense. The guy is likely very wealthy. The age he'll be at in 2026, 2027 when the next console launches, he'll be near or older than Reggie was. There's no need to remain in the role. Like Reggie, he'll certainly be able to retire early and devote his time to outreach, Boards, advisory committees, etc.

It's not a Phil issue it's a MS issue.
Terrible out of touch company.
yes but Phil has been awful for Xbox, the OG and the first half of the 360 gen was great but ever since Phil took over as head of 1st party studios back in 2008 and even more so since he took over as the head of Xbox 10+ years ago it's been downhill

he's the longest tenured head Xbox has had yet has completely destroyed the brand, he shouldn't be in charge of another console launch

NEXT HEAD OF XBOX. CONCORD IS FINALLY COMING BACK
You can shit-talk the guy on the pic all you want, but unlike the current Xbox leadership he was a very good corporate businessman whom very successfully navigated PlayStation through the deal that, as we can see clearly, broke Xbox's back without spending a single dime.

well, yeah, but i could say that about my first marriage...

Good grief, Microsoft. You'll fire thousands like it is nothing but you'll let this failure coast into retirement?

A sad turn of events indeed, but the silver lining is he's retiring after, not before, so there's still time for magical Phil moments for all to cherish and take in.

MS is terrible for everything though.

The damage this guy has done.

A lot of people blame Don Mattrick for the Xbox One debacle, but the reality is Spencer has had over a decade since then to change the direction of Xbox. He just directed it straight into the ground, literally, to the point that the Xbox brand now just a nebulous publishing label with neither interesting hardware nor unique software.
