Rune Factory 4 |OT|

Haven't finished day two yet since I have a lot going on right now. I did beat the first dungeon and managed to speak to everyone in town. I think imma make Forte or Xiao Pai my waifu. One of the basement stands has a palette on it that when you click it displays a bunch of fan art for the fifth anniversary. Was pretty cool to look through it all.

The zoomed out aspect isn't really bugging me much so far. I look forward to dumping some serious time into this game when I have some available.

As one more question, what's the condition to begin "formally" dating a potential significant other? I've got Xiao well into 7 hearts at this point and I'd heard previously that was where you could begin dropping the "love bombs", as it were, but she doesn't really seem to think I'm serious yet.

Granted, I've gone on plenty of murder dates with both her and Forte, but the game obviously doesn't quite track those in the exact same way.

I'm actually a little disappointed that Lin Fa hasn't yet commented on the fact that I'm keeping her daughter out for over a day and having her stay over at my place - Xiao's at the point where she won't go home at 7 automatically and will even follow me home as I crash on the bed, and she's level fiftysomething with a forged high-quality axe and almost five hundred attack. You'd think people would notice she's become a combat monster.

Has any of you had any success with getting anyone not named Forte to go adventuring with you? She's at a much higher bond level than the rest just because I can pretty much take her with me every time I go out for some free heals/have a meatshield handy.

I got the male butler (not Volkanon, wish that were possible) to go with me as well as Forte. Think he was at 2 bond level.

I'm pretty sure it's a combination of bond level and not having responsibilities that day (e.g. tending shop, picking up shipping). Haven't gotten anyone else to go adventuring yet.

I have played this one yet, but I remember the requirement for that in Rune Factory Frontier was eight hearts. Possibly the same here?

Why must the best waifus in this game already be married?

What's worse is that Frey seems all right but nope, the dialogue in the Illustration Contest gallery says that Frey is a female version of Lest and they don't meet in the game, crushing my dreams of the two meeting each other and marrying. Consolation: you can play as Frey.

Amber is growing on me though, maybe I'll have Lest marry her.

That's pretty bloody impressive compared to what the other RF games used to have.

It's technically more detailed, sure, but the lack of details in the DS models let you fill in the blanks on your own. The RF4 models are supposed to have more realistic proportions, but it's kind of stuck halfway between what it's supposed to look like/what it actually looks like.

the waifus available are fine and adorable, but not the type i'd breed with.

just sayin'

Yup. I've already grown to like Venti way more than any of the actual marriage candidates, but alas. The terrible RF tradition lives on. :(

Anybody else using the D-Pad? I tried the sliding-pad but...it just doesn't feel right. I don't know, I'm so used to up left up left up left, zigzagging to get places like on the DS games. It feels awckward to just run around in perfect curves.

I keep alternating between the two, even in mid-battle. I don't like the circle pad too much, but the positioning of the d-pad lower on the system makes it harder to keep my hand placed there for too long.

Having a Sheep Mode Micah flashback here. Comparable?

don't know. last RF i played was 1... and that was like half a decade ago lol.

Speaking of dpad, really retarded that you can't have it map some shortcuts to most used stuff.

Let me choose dpad or circle pad for movement, why would i need both?

Yeahhhh, combat has improved pretty damn dramatically since then. :lol

I have occasionally considered replaying the original but can never quite convince myself to go there ;)

well at least in this you don't get out of stamina after 2 swings of a sword in the beginning.

I still encounter the problem of using up all my stamina and what not doing farm work and its like 9am.

fuck y'all. bed time :3

I don't think basic weapon attacks cost rp anymore o_O, or really little.

You could opt to play Frontier for the Wii instead, since it largely features the same characters.

...Of course, Frontier also has Runeys, so I'm not sure I'd ever recommend people actually play it.

In Frontier and ToD the menu and UI is set up in the traditional clunky way, so the whole time I had to trudge through the menus I was thinking that there's a perfectly good IR pointer available to Wii developers, USE IT! With the 3DS, there's a big 'ol touch screen down there, let me customize it to be more useful if I don't want a huge map there!

^Frontier was my first RF game, and nothing about it turned me off, in fact, it got me into the series. But maybe I'm so weird that I enjoyed managing the Runeys, it felt epic to go from decimated population to vibrant life. Yet if it were'nt for the internet, I don't think I'd have been able to figure it out, so perhaps that's an issue.

I have, and yeah. Runeys.

*sob*

this game also has one of the most confusing quest log i've played of recent lol. Just tell me straight, do what, deliver to whom, talk to what etc.

Yeah, attacking basically costs nothing now. Plus, Rune Flowers spawning in the same places allows me to do so much more than I could in other RF games. There are so many of them scattered around. My daily routine has been something like this:

1. Farm work
2. Spend rest of RP on crafting stuff
3. Talk with everyone
4. Get Rune Flowers to full RP
5. Dungeons/gathering/more crafting
Repeat if I feel like getting more Rune Flowers

I've finally put time into making items (haven't really messed with upgrading though) and they make such a big difference! I wish it were easier to get forging levels since I don't mass-produce weapons or armor like I do medicine or food. Plus, it's a lot harder to get the materials for them. I've been neglecting to take people with me on dungeons, but I think I'll start now.

Also, I think I'm level 55 in a level 30+ dungeon and I've still died twice lol. Higher levels < better equipment. Disappearing monsters are really annoying! D:

I wish games like this got more praise. I'm a day in and can already tell this better than any animal crossing Nintendo has ever put out.

Well I was just wondering about that. If Animal Crossing ( the latest one on 3DS) is the only thing I've played between this series, AC and Harvest Moon, will I dig this? Watching videos, I just can't seem to get a sense of what will grab me. Are battles...fun?

Funny thing is, when I played Rune Factory Frontier this year going in blind about the series, I came for the RPG/battling/dungeons/bosses aspect, yet I got roped into liking the other stuff (the socializing/watching the characters interact and grow in relationships, the farming.) I've already bought Harvest Moon 3D but I haven't really gone into it yet. And here I'm thinking "Maybe I'll even try Animal Crossing and what the hell, maybe I'll even try Hometown Story when it's out." So here I am, going the opposite direction compared to you :p

Here's Bob Mackey's review, from USGamer: http://www.usgamer.net/articles/rune-factory-4-review The score is 4/5 and here's my favorite little tidbit:

Simply put, you'll never have a shortage of things to do in Rune Factory 4, and each of your possible activities is breezy enough that you won't mind jumping from mining to fishing to crafting to slaying at a moment's notice -- and given all your options, there's always something you'll need to attend to just around the corner. Now that's a recipe for addiction if I've ever heard one.

So it sounds as if Mackey's enthusiasm for Harvest Moon was going down due to the sameness of previous games, and lo and behold, he discovered Rune Factory after all these years without noticing it! And he likes it! He even says that the performance of the game makes up for its graphics, so looks like some fans such as some in this thread are more critical of the game than newcomers would be :p Oh, and he even praises the UI and the inventory management. So much for what I said about it. So it's cool to see two different critical viewpoints of the game, one from a longtime fan (Gameinformer's review) and a newcomer (USGamer's review). And I find it amusing how the scores turned out, the newcomer praising it more than the veteran did.

Oh and the summary tidbit gives a mention to Animal Crossing:
If your Animal Crossing: A New Leaf town fell into disrepair weeks after everyone's summer obsession faded away, consider giving Rune Factory 4 a try. While Neverland can't offer the pure craftsmanship of a Nintendo product, their little world contains the same abundance of options and customization, but in a package that offers goals beyond the simple pleasures of hoarding. (Plus, you can do that, too.)

I just bought this. My normal go-to series is Etrian odyssey. I hope I like it and don't find it too hard, and that it doesn't have too much dialogue. Never played this series before!

Anyone found a good place to mine bronze? I've got the recipes to make the second tier farm tools but no bronze to do it with.

^^Only time that I know of where there was a time limit was in RF1, where there was a dungeon open only in Winter (the water had to freeze before you could walk over it and enter that dungeon.) But that's the only one I've run into.

There was a lot I didn't like in A New Beginning, and I'm liking this a lot. I find it has a nice balance between stuff you can do, and it uses the prince 'orders' a lot better than New Leaf's pathetic excuse for mayor 'tasks' with PWP and Ordinances.

Soooooooo if I haven't played one of these before but have always been intrigued by the whole "Harvest Moon with combat" premise. So should I get RF3 or RF4?

Honestly, either would be great. So far I like 3 better, but it's just because of personal preferences.

Played about 30 hours of RF3 and only about 3 or 4 of RF4 so far, RF4 feels super silky smooth in everything. I like the prince orders system and the plotline seems more interesting than RF3's so far. Graphics look nicer than I was expecting too.

Only thing I wish it didn't keep from RF3 are those shit quality sound effects.

Hmm, I like the art and the idea of the game. It sounds like the graphics aren't perfect though, and I imagine they would look worse on an XL. :(

Should I return it? It worth 39.99?

I started playing it today and I honestly have no idea what people were talking about regarding the graphics. Sure, it doesn't look like Mario 3D Land, but it definitely looks presentable. I think the pre-rendered CG backgrounds look good, and all of the towns peepz animate well when running around. The game also runs at 60 FPS, which is pretty dank.

The game is awesome, play it!

Yeah, even on an XL, some of the 2D art looks really great. The portraits are really nice too. I have 0 graphical complaints. It looks a bit too much like RF3, but dat framerate is wonderful.

Without even trying it? That sounds silly to me, especially if you have preordered it.

I just picked mine up today, but haven't played it yet.

But it actually has a relatively thick, color instruction manual, so that's a huge bonus right away.

Getting so fucking tired of these fold-out one page "manuals", or none at all.

If I open it, I can't return it. I just picked it up on a whim. I've heard of the series for several years, so I decided to buy a copy. I will give it a try and see how I like it, though. Thanks for the replies!
