They also took pauses for example after the Popasna breakthrough, but these were generally localised.
I'm not sure what you mean by intentional vs forced. It is intentional in the sense that they know they need to take a pause, and announced they would be taking one. It is also forced because the manpower issues are creating the need in the first place.
Yes they are going to need to keep artillery shelling (which they are) but it will be more limited compared to offensive pushes.
Furthermore, on Ukraine's side, an operational pause is a situation to take advantage of, which is part of the reason we see bigger pushes from Ukraine currently. Strike while your enemy is weak and all that.
