So in your opinion, what's the saddest movie that you've ever seen.

As in the emotion.

Currently my picks are Grave of the Fireflies and The Event.

Whats that movie with the kid that grows faster than a normal person. He turns old fast even though he's still like 14 or something like that. I found that to be sad.

Jack

Starring Robin Williams.

I think you're talking about Jack - starring Robin Williams.

I guess I may have the title wrong though...but I remember it being quite sad. Wasn't Bill Cosby in it as well?

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
I haven't seen a whole lot of sad movies, but I remember having the most depressing response to What Dreams May Come (Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr).

Grave of the Fireflies, hands down.

Just saw this a few nights ago for the first time. It does feel like you've been kicked in the nuts after watching it, but it's hard for me to buy the animated tears and the emotion from the characters-- I didn't find it very touching.

That is because you have no soul.

The movie that tugged at me a bit was "We were Soldiers"

You became so attached to Chris Klein's character and his wife back home, his death just kind of gets to you a bit.

And when i was 5, E.T. tore me up....

Personally, the saddest movie in recent memory was Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind.

I haven't seen a few that were listed here, but others worth mentioning include:

Schindler's List
Vanilla Sky
Big Fish

- For the most part, the last 2 movies weren't really sad until the last scenes, especially Big Fish.

SPOILER TAGS you fucker. My friend told me it was an incredibly depressing movie and I was going to rent it soon.

What the fuck is wrong with people?

Aw man...the only thing that got me about We Were Soldiers was
that poor French trumpeteer
. That shit was harsh. We Were Soldier was far too overacted for my tastes. If I have to see Barry Pepper's snotty nose in another movie.....

I had just watched The Event today, it just really got to me.

Like I was just mildly interested in the actual movie, kinda flipping between that and another movie, but then the end, it just started getting interesting. Then bam! one of the saddest endings ever, and not the kind where you're sad for 5 minutes, it continued on for a good 15 mins. Giving you a chance to breath here and there, then hitting you again.

Anyways, if you're looking to have your masculinaty destroyed (by crying like a school girl) or prove you're dead inside (by not being effected by this movie), check out this movie.

Yeah, that's kind of a guilty pleasure (or not pleasure depending on how you look at it) for me.

I agree with Grave of the Fireflies and Dancer In The Dark.

After having watched Debbie Does Dallas, I was kinda sad that I'm not Mr. Greenfield. Does that count?

Some movie about the Selfish Giant fairytale. The ending is incredibly beautiful and sad, I'm sorrowed everytime I think of the Giant death covered with white blooms at the feet of the tree. :(

Blackace

if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
Grave of the Fireflies and Mississippi Burning...

I've never cried at a movie, but three that got me emotionally caught-up:

"Titanic," "Ghost," and "The Passion of the Christ"

I agree with the votes for Grave of the Fireflies.

I think that Ran is a sad movie. The ending is incredibly bleak and offers no redemption for anyone.

This might be an odd choice, but I think Bladerunner is sad. I rarely rewatch it because it's a depressing experince for me.

edit:Altman fans should check out McCabe & Mrs. Miller. There's quite a bit of humour early on in the film, but don't let that fool you.

Ran, being based on King Lear, is the most tragic Shakespeare play ever. My teacher cried reading it.

Spoiler tags for a movie thats about 3 years old... right....

Get over it.

Lisa Edelstein's dad touched my private parts. True fact.
Dancer in the Dark makes me weep like a baby. I like to describe it as the saddest moment in Oliver Sacks' Awakenings (when Deniro starts losing it again), just the entire way through. There is nothing uplifting in that entire movie, but it's just so fucking poignant.

I'm a sucker for melancholia and nostalgia though (Milan Kundera is my fave author), so I'm even moved by scenes like Royal telling Richie "But I'm gonna live!"

I watched My Left Foot for the first time in 12 or so years a couple nights back, and that movie is pretty high on the makes me sad list..

Doc Holliday

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
Forrest Gump - damn ending gets me everytime

Magnolia - Toms cruise scene with his dad makes me sad :(

Glory - wahhh wahhhh

American Beauty - crap, i hate the ending

Ohh! Lorenzo's Oil is up there also.

Oh, Jesus... this movie isn't just sad, it's terrifying. It sends chills down my spine even harder than Schindler's List, and that's saying a lot.
