Saddest movie ever?

Fafalada

Fafracer forever
Breaking the waves.

Also second Bladerunner as one of the candidates.

Out of the recently seen movies - Casshern.
Well - I'd say more depressing then sad (if you can do the distinction).
Basically a live action anime - with a pretty nasty war and apocalypse theme. Some of the violence and warscenes get a bit too much at times too.

I'd like to add Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. It was not a sad movie per see, but the end made it so, especially since it was incredibly well made. :)

The saddest movie I have ever seen is Elephant Man by David Lynch. Holy shit, is that movie depressing. :( Great movie though.

"I'm not a monster! I am a human being! I am... a man!"

That sure made me sad. :(

Oh man...yes. Say what you will about the quality of the movie, but I seriously couldn't speak after the ending, the lump in my throat was so large. Even worse because I saw it with my family, and they hated it passionately, so they all thought I was a big wuss.

(Probably true, but still...:p)

There was a point in A.I. where I felt I had finished watching the greatest movie ever made. Then it kept going. At this moment, it ceased being the greatest movie I'd ever seen. And going. Now I'm starting to lose my patience. And going.

Every time it faked me out, it pissed me off a little bit more.

Hmm... I'm getting the feeling that Grave of the Fireflies is sad because it has character(s) that, "we're getting tortured feel sorry for us" thing to it so it becomes a sad/depressing movie because of it. I don't know maybe I'll watch it when I get the chance, maybe not.

But for me, the saddest ever was Schindler's List. It's not depressing since it turned out good in the end but sad that the Oscar Schindler lost everything just to protect those people. When he said something like "I've tried everything (crying)" just couldn't hold back the tears from flowing out. :lol

Braveheart also comes to mind.

Elephant Man, I saw in class so having seen it with other bitches that can't stop gossiping or guys just being an asshole just killed it for me.

Err... not to me. For me it's a case of "I used to be that boy at one stage in my life" and knowing
he never had a hope to begin with.

Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan

Mel is pretty good at choking ya up with Braveheart and Passion as well.

I agree with Blade Runner, I love the movie in all, but I can't watch it more than once a year for some reason.
I'd have to say Schindler's List too

Then he goes on to say something like, "I could have saved one more" if he just sold his nazi pin or something...such an amazingly sad moment

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Kinda forgot about HoSaF since it's so relatively new. Damn did that ever end on a downer.

Personally, the saddest movie in recent memory was Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind.

Mmm. Yeah, right. How is it possible to cry at a movie that jumbles with its timeline is beyond me, sorry. Nothing like classical narrative to make you cry. ESotSM was great, but not an emotional flick.

1. House of Sand and Fog
Ouch, that one was hard. Lorenzo's Oil, I can also remember being pretty much a huge downer.

"In America"
Yep, this one too.

I'd like to mention A Simple Plan, which is not a terribly sad movie, but has one of the saddest characters I've seen in my life, played by Billy Bob Thornton. Bah, come to think of it, the whole movie was kinda sad, too.

The band is really, REALLY sad in some way too. :lol

Anyone saw Night and Fog? It was the first documentary that featured actual footage of the nazi concentration camps after WW2 ended. It was so unsettling. :(

I saw that. The footage with the trucks pushing dead bodies is probably the most disturbing shot I've ever seen.

Schindler's List for me. I watched it in the theatre... have seen small chunks since on TV. Bought it on DVD first day it was out, haven't brought myself to watch it 'cause I know what a downer it can be...

Ran is also pretty sad.

Clearly, since it's mentioned all the time here, I'll have to watch Grave of the Fireflies some time.

I can't remember anything else that strikes me as exceptionally sad right this minute, but I know there are more movies than these that have really affected me emotionally.

It was war. I would hate the people who didn't help the kids more but for me, it was because I have a little sister.

also the dramas by Yimou Zhang
Shanghai Triad
Not One Less
Happy Times (somewhat misleading title)
To Live

Probably Schindler's List, especially considering they made us watch it in Grade 6. I just bought it a few days ago, gonna watch it for a second time soon. Other movies that have made me sad:

Big Fish
Saving Private Ryan
Frequency
Life Is Beautiful

Meet Joe Black - this entire film was beautiful, but Bill's last night (at his party) makes me sad. "What a wonderful world" instrumental in the background helps, too.

Titanic - say what you will.

American Beauty - a beautiful ending, and there is just something about that dancing plastic bag and the score.

What Dreams May Come - very depressing.

XMonkey

lacks enthusiasm.
Life is Beautiful
Grave of the Fireflies

and uh.. Million Dollar Baby, although I found it a little more depressing than sad.

Grave of the Fireflies was one depressing thing after another. I'm feeling blue just thinking about it. :[

Grapes of Rath comes to mind too.

I didn't cry like a baby like most people I know, but the part at the end of Armageddon when you see Chick's son run to his daddy got me choked up a bit.

House of Sand and Fog is sure getting a lot of votes.

Is it a good movie? highly recommended? or just really sad?

HoSaF: Ben Kingsley has the best performance I've seen in a long time. The movie's very well done but breaks your heart into a million little pieces when. Much like Grave of the Fireflies the movie starts off down but finds a way to get lower and lower and lower until the very idea of hope is long forgotten. Two people with very strong feelings about one particular house and nothing else to lose = disaster.

I broke into tears after
Berhani's (Kingsley's) son is shot and killed and we see Berhani running with his son in his arms, and moreso when he finds out that his son is dead
. Man, that was hard to watch. I won't even mention the what happens in the end. There is one thing that keeps the movie from falling completely into bleak oblivion and that's the fact that
Lester, the messed up cop, gets the butt end of some sweet justice.
I seriously would have stood up in the theater and given the movie the finger if that didn't happen.

House of Sand and Fog is sad because people in the movie is just I dunno, they wouldn't think before they act, people who are emotionally driven, and psychotic people mixed in which is a recipe for disaster. Come to think of it, I just hate that movie. HATE. Did I enjoy watching it, absolutely but I just hated how it turned out. And was it me or was Berooz (24) there?

maybe not sad, but I just finished Friday Night Lights. What a downer.

True! That movie is great and
when they lose at the state final, it was fucking depressing. an excellent sport movie, even one of the best IMO
