Art film???? Worst experiences or movies you've ever seen.

boring and uninteresting.

I find many Terrence Malick movies tough going because of the lack of plot and the endless voice overs - but I absolutely love Days of Heaven and The New World. Watched both movies numerous times.

Oh, and The Fountain was a masterpiece. And I love many movies based on Charlie Kaufmanan scripts like Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

There's on-the-nose and pretentious, and then there's Aronofsky's Mother!

I hated this movie, it was so boring and was full of gender politics that was hit over my head with

I really didn't get what all the fuss was about with this film. The plot just wasn't there. Kid from a rough background turns to adult. Becomes comfortable with being gay and sells drugs. That's it. It wasn't the worst film I've ever seen, but Oscar worthy? No.

Love this film but I can see why it's not everyone cup of tea. For me it's the OST, Cinematography, etc. Just a well made movie to me

Suspiria (2018)

What in the McGuffin was all that projectile vomit at the end there? And I don't think that the film community gives a sack of shit about this film either. Lost in the anals of wank history.

Loved this movie and it's one of the first movies I saw that's horror where I watched all the gory scenes in full without averting my eyes

Skinamarink was a complete waste of time. People on here told me it was the scariest movie ever. My ass it was lol

Dude I dropped this movie 20 minutes in

Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge, wordt theatre experience ever. What a piece of shit.
You take that back 🤨
Amazing movie, great soundtrack.

Movies I walked out:
Punch Drunk Love with Adam Sandler
Breakfast for champions with Bruce Willis

Punished Miku

Human Rights Subscription Service
Not an art film, but the worst was going to see Ultraviolet in the theater. There were like 10 people or less in theater, and most of us were laughing, and not in a good way. Then multiple people walked out before it was over, including me.

Second worst is probably Rise of the Skywalker or whatever Star Wars IX is called. One of the worst movies I've ever seen in the theater.

One movie I really hated was Closer... The one where you can see a bit of Natalie Portman's butthole. It's just horrible.

Seconded on Punch Drunk Love. I actually saw it in college and was like "I hate everything about this movie". Then just a year or two ago, I was like, "it couldn't have been as bad as I thought it was back then, let me revisit." And after I watched it I was like... "I hate everything about this movie."

Wasn't an art film but I remember as a kid watching Sphere at my local theater. I thought from the commercials it was going to be a cool horror action film. Instead it was just boring and confusing.

Possibly an unpopular opinion, if not uncommon, Schindler's List.

Watched part of it at the theater with a gf. The B&W art film stylizing took away from the subject.
We looked at each other a few times, went for a smoke break about 40 minutes in(this was when smoking was allowed in the lobby), had a chat about it, then went back in to grip the armrests in effort to keep quiet for a little while longer before we left and got refunds.

My take is that people have no idea what art house is when they drop Spielberg into the mix.

Terrible thread.
it said art film not art house. Looked at what was posted. Captain America. Oh ok.

But, should check out the movies you posted, if you're being the change you want to be.

To be fair, constantly categorizing films and music and so on is just annoying as hell. Some weird trait where people feel the need to sub-categorize everything until it all fits into some idea of a thing. Music is especially annoying.

"Brobro, did you hear the latest Hyperweirdcore drill and dubstep bass tune? So lit, bruhbruh." I guess it gives people the illusion of belonging to a scene.

Your point is still valid though. :p

Awww man, I like The Fountain quite a bit.

Now Mother or whatever that Jennifer Lawrence one was....no thanks.

Wow, Mother is one of the best films of recent years IMO. (I'm probably going to find out it came out 15 years ago now) EDIT: 7 years ago Ai-Ai-Ai.

Synedoche: New York was one I absolutely was not in the mood for, and have never felt inclined to give it another go.

The hallmark of a successful "art film", IMHO, is that is STRIKES DEEP for some, gets a golf clap round of applause from others, is largely oblivious to the masses, and ENRAGES a decent chunk of folks.

Apathy is the curse of any artist.

I think that Climax, 2018 (dir. Gaspar Noé) is a more memorable trip.

They are both spiral out of control type of films.

The only Gasper Noe film I watched was Into The Void. I enjoyed it but at times, I got a headache watching it. I'm eventually going to watch the rest of his films lime Irreversible, Climax and Love (I heard it's basically a hardcore Porno though)

I can say that the cube... Is a great Cult movie.

Personally I like it.

I saw all three Cube movies last year. The first one is fantastic. I even enjoyed the last two but they were just good and they went more towards the cheese

I would say recent films I saw that I found boring that are artsy are

Maxxxine
The Fountain
Bodies Bodies Bodies
Last Tango In Paris
A History of Violence
Compliance

Are a couple I found boring to just plain bad

Is Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind considering an art house film? That's fantastic. Easily a top 20 for me.

The Fountain is great too. Also a favorite.

I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind when it came out in theaters 15 times. Love that movie so much

As for The Fountain, wasn't a fan

I prefer his other stuff like Noah (had issues but did enjoy it) and Mother!

5 Centimeters per Second sticks out in my mind as an awful experience. This is pre-"Your Name" Shinkai, and he hadn't really figured out how to tell a plot the same plot over and over, so the movie's all about feeling over anything else. Beautiful vistas and the longing of two, in-love teenagers now separated by distance. The whole runtime I'm thinking, "Pick up a damn phone; this is excruciating."

I loved Your Name and Weathering With You

I thought Suzume was ok. It just felt like more of the same with a romance I felt was forced and didn't feel natural at all in comparison to his last two films

I did probably miss the point of the movie but my impression is that Joker is mainly an "award-magnet" kind of film.
Slow, pompous and full of itself with all those long close-ups made just to impress the judges of whatever event this is shown at.
Joaquin Phoenix was wonderful in there but the movie was boring, predictable and stupid.

Why does art cinema have to be something like that?

Or the typical scene where the drop of water falls on the bathroom.

If you think Joker is slow then you haven’t seen many older films lol. Tarkovsky’s Solaris or Stalker would literally be unwatchable to you.

That's my main issue with the movie. Joaquin Phoenix is the only good thing about that film

I love violin and when my wife and I were first dating i got us tickets to what I thought was an orchestral rendition of Vivaldi's 4 seasons. It turned out to be interpretive dance done to Vivaldi's 4 Seasons. It was horrible.and my level of disappointment was immense. All I could say was , "I am so, so sorry." The only way I can describe it is do you remember the south park where they do the interpretive dance for the Christmas show but they don't want to offend anyone? Picture that but to 4 seasons...

I walked out of Love and Friendship (Kate Beckinsale). That and the first or second Captain America are the only movies I walked out of.

The first Cap movie is the one with WW2 vibes, and the second one is Winter Soldier.

This is usually looked back on fondly as "when Marvel was good", what happened?

Haha that movie is in my top-5 of all time :p
I’m a total film nerd and spend most of my time watching stuff from the 40s, 50s, experimental 60s French avantgarde. I even love late stage Godard but I can’t for the life of me put myself through a Tarkovski film. And I love slow cinema!

I just don’t get his context in Russian cinema, coming from the language of editing of Eisenstein and Vertov to static cameras and 20 cuts in a 3 hour film.

I’ll never get it.

And this is from someone who watched the below short in 1999 at a theatre and thought it was the coolest shit I ever saw:
