But... from what I remember even in Japanese dub those special attacks were in English: "Moon tiara attack", "Moon Healing Escalation", "Supreme Thunder", "Crescent Beam", "Fire Soul" etc. Or were they renamed in previous English dub?
Mercury's "Shabon Spray" is an exception, with Shabon meaning soap bubbles.

I was referring to the special attacks in Bleach.

Which is like episodes 6 and 9 or something, respectively.
8 and 10, actually.

Although speaking of episode 6, it's the first episode directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, the man who will later get promoted to series director and also direct the Sailor Moon R movie, then went on to direct Revolutionary Girl Utena and Mawaru-Penguindrum. His other episodes in s1 are 11, 15, 21, 26, 31, 36, and 46 (final). They're all good.

aren't Viz the ones who did the Bleach dub?

I only watched a few episodes, but I was immediately annoyed by the fact that they just left all the special attack names in Japanese. And there were like a hundred of them.

Yes, Viz dubbed Bleach (and Naruto).

If I remember correctly....

Moon Tiara Action became Moon Tiara Magic
Shabon Spray became Mercury Bubbles Blast
Fire Soul became Mars Fire Ignite
Supreme Thunder became Jupiter Thunder Crash
Crescent Beam became Venus Crescent Beam Smash

Started to watch the first episode this morning with my daughter. Had to stop half way through to take her to school, so will finish it up when her homework is done this evening.

Some random thoughts on seeing the show in its original form for the first time:

1) The intro music for the old English dub had (synthesized) electric guitars, and is therefore objectively superior.

2) Bun-head is a poor replacement for meat-ball head Or to to be chronologically accurate, meatball-head was improvement on the original bun-head.

3) I actually dig Beryl's Japanese voice. Didn't expect that one. Also Beryl has a boss now? Also also, The Silver Crystal gets mentioned right away. That a plus; its existence and the Negaverse Dark Kingdom wanting it kinda gets dropped on the viewer abruptly latter on in the season in the dub.

4) I'll miss Molly Naru's ridiculous Boston accent. Otherwise, Naru comes off more likeable in half an episode than Molly ever did.

5) Its cool had the yoma have names now (like Morga). I mean I'm sure they always did, but now they're actually mentioned on-screen. Makes them seem less like canon fodder. Even though they are.

6) The captions on Hulu seem to run a little fast. I can keep up, but my daughter is having a rough time with some of the shorter sentences. She's no stranger to dubbed anime either; watched the first arc of Sword Art Online with me as well as couple of episodes of Log Horizon and Devil Survivor.

All in all, I'm pleased with it, so long as i remember to take of my nostalgia goggles before viewing. The good news is my daughter seem really interested in it. She was super annoyed when we had to stop it to go to school and is now doing her homework super quick so we can get back to it. Finally have someone on my side in this house when it comes to Sailor Moon!

"Bun-head" isn't original either. The orginal expression is Odango Head, which is a reference to this Japanese food: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dango

Obviously any spherical food would work as a replacement, and I'd agree that "bun-head" isn't an ideal English equivalent.

I remember in SuperS when Pegasus upgraded them and Mars' Burning Mandala/Mars Celestial Fire Surround became "Mega Mars Fire Rings Flash!", I was like "wtf did I just hear?" lol.

Although in the manga
where the Four Heavenly Soldiers were straight and each had a relationship with a partnering Inner Senshi.

Haven't read the manga, but I heard years and years ago that
that was just an image that Takeuchi drew but the fans took to.

Yeah pretty much. There's really nothing in the manga itself that implies that. Though there may have been a hint I missed or something.

A thing that bothered me while watching it on my PS3 is that for the subtitles, the words has a black bar behind them, and it's a bit delayed. For the most part I'm excited to see more, and will watch the next 2 episodes later on today.

That's a Hulu Plus setting for the captions that you can change by going into the settings menu (along with other things about the captions). I think that, with the settings I put on them (white text) that it actually makes it easier to read.

Well, there's
Another Story on SNES that back it up more too :p Not canon or anything, but I dunno, I kinda like how they elaborated on the relationship aspect.

I still wonder why back then the US couldn't dub Sailor Stars while it was dubbed in Mexico.

Because America can't handle outlined Barbie doll-silhouettes, I guess? Would be kinda hard to edit and mutilate the finale. Harder than the first season.

Not quite.

Minako had a love interest that suspiciously looks like Kunzite. And didn't Kaitou Ace confirm Venus's relationship? Or at the very least was jealous of their appearances.

Not quite.

Both Minako and Rei have love interests that suspiciously look like Kunzite and Jadeite. And didn't Kaitou Ace confirm Venus's relationship? Or at the very least was jealous of their appearances.

There is a panel of Kunzite and Minako together, and then Ace says "Come to think of it, you were always falling in love back then too" which Artemis validates

So, uh... the Hulu scripts kinda suck. =/

I'm really happy they didn't keep honorifics, and use Given name -> Surname name order... but the dialogue is kinda stilted. Some lines far from flow, and others don't even make sense.

In the scene where Morga is trying to sell Usagi the ring, and marks it down from 500,000 yen to 30,000, Usagi and Naru yell, "500,000 yen for 30,000?!" Yet, the subs say the opposite. This is right after Morga's line, "It's 50,000 yen, but..." followed by, "But I'll give it to you for 30,000 yen." It just doesn't flow at all. I'm sure they'll be massaged a fair bit for the physical release, but I wasn't expecting them to be as rough as they are. The next line? "I'll buy it!" Now, I've seen that in different subs as, "I'll take it!" and, "Sold!" Both of which are infinitely more effective than what we got. Of course I'm nitpicking, and they're certainly still miles ahead of the Digimon subs... I dunno. It seems very in line with the manga translations, if you know what I mean.

EDIT: Yikes! They really don't get any better. Aiya? Usagi is surprised Sailor V has a game which somehow warrants an interrobang, then Usagi screams in pain after she kicks a door and that only gets an ellipses? 'World of the dead'? They couldn't just say 'underworld'?

"World of the dead" and "underworld" are two different things in some religious lore. "Underworld", to many people, means Hell. "World of the dead" could mean a number of things, though most refer to it as a spiritual realm that isn't necessarily connected to any heaven or hell. That's what I got out of that, anyway. I've only watched the first episode so far (recording and WWE Raw got in the way). I plan on watching the other three later on.

I think at minimum,
the Four Generals were Endymion's bodyguards, and the Inner Senshi were Serenity's bodyguards, so when Serenity and Endymion hooked up, there was obviously a period of time in which both groups were forced to mingle and kill time together, while they waited for one or the other to decide it was time for half the group to go home.

I've never seen Sailor Moon. wat do

Wait for the Blu-ray.
That's awful advice, why would he blind buy Sailor Moon down the line when it's made available for free right now?

The Blu-Rays will just be upscaled SD content, I'd wait for reviews before recommending them to anyone, I suspect they won't be that great, depending on the price people might be better off buying the DVDs.

Oh, it's on Hulu already? New episodes every Monday, you say?

Welp. Been forever since the days of sneaking dubbed SM on syndicated morning TV. Guess I should finally sit down and watch this show proper.

My theory is that they'll leave the sub version for free on Hulu, and keep the dub exclusive to the DVD/Blu-Rays.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-05-16/viz-licenses-original-sailor-moon-anime-franchise

Viz aims to release the franchise digitally with English subtitles starting this summer, followed by the English dub starting in late 2014. It also plans DVD and Blu-ray/DVD combo releases in half-season sets starting this fall.

Unless there was some sort of miscommunication...

Subbed version already streaming, new eps on Monday.

Sailor Moon Crystal starts streaming July 5 (Saturday).

First look at the new dub, and new dub cast revealed at Anime Expo (July 4-6), a convention which also happens to have much of the old dub's cast attending.

DVD half-season box sets start releasing in "fall". The subs currently airing with the stream are not final, and will be refined/improved before they get pressed to DVD.

New dub starts streaming "late 2014".
