Ok, when discussing music for the old anime, keep in mind that all of it was written by one person: Takanori Arisawa. He wrote the background music for all five seasons, all three movies, and even the various videogames based on the anime including the beatem up games, the fighting games, and
Another Story RPG! It wasn't until the live action show did another person, Michiru Oshima, come into the picture.
Given this musical continuity, each season provided its own key themes but also built upon the library of music used in general. In other words, themes written for S1 continued to be used for the entire run. For example,
this piece from S1 is later used for
this amazing sequence in Sailor Moon S.
As such, because the dub version of S and Supers did not replace the music, dub fans are already familiar with some tunes from S1 and R. Of course, there's a gradual shift in emphasis and style as the show goes on, and this was deliberate, as Arisawa noted that he wanted to shift from a more jass/pop feel to something more classical to reflect the maturity of the characters. Arisawa has also mentioned that the show and movie directors played a large role in helping him shape the final product, and this is reflected in the transitions from Junichi Satou(1-59) to Kunihiko Ikuhara(60-166, R movie) to Takuya Igarashi(167-200) as the show goes on.
Another transition to note is that of the transformation and attack music. The
music used in s1 certainly has its own thing going, but the show
changes direction somewhat in R using this music which then develops into the
S transform sequence as well as individualized sequences for all the Inners.
So anyway, some other S1/R highlights:
One of the many brassy tunes
Upbeat and hectic tune
Trademark mood setting tune
Tuxedo Mask's theme
Moody woodwind solo
Action tune
Another brassy tune
Jadeite's theme
Pinchi soshite Ketsui, which plays during a climactic scene in the tail end of the first season.
This version of the first ED, also used in pivotal scene.
Black Moon theme
Even moodier. Almost like a Super Metroid track.
This tense but jazzy piece was also found in the last episode of Supers.
