Wow thanks for that link Ayumi; the Blu-Rays look much better.

Usagi's voice starts getting annoying. I know she is voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi - the same VA that voiced her in the original TV show; and yet I don't remember disliking her voice that much in the original 200-episode-show.
Yeah, she doesn't sound as good as she did 20 years ago in my opinion.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
I haven't seen the show since my fave Mars debuted. Have Jupiter and Venus shown up? Were they done justice? I hope the art's improved too (Mars is supposed to be the most beautiful and she had the most instances of derp face), that and the toning down of Mars' attitude kind of put me off...

Sailor Jupiter has just shown up and she's great. Venus is not there yet.
The art in the last episode really improved - I haven't noticed any derp faces or rubber limbs.

Just finished re-reading Vol. 4 and the Black Moon Arc is much better than the Dark Kingdom arc, in my opinion. Curious to see if Toei will handle this, and if they'll do it justice.

So I know we're watching Crystal here, but is anyone following along with the 90s anime on Hulu as it's releasing and seeing it for the first time? We don't have a separate thread about that, right?

I am and I review them for the Anime GAF and Toonami GAF communities.

There won't be spoilers all over there? Like, I literally know nothing about the series except what I've seen which is all that's been on Hulu so far.

Also Edag Plata, be sure to watch the Live-Action series at one point too.

As a big toku guy, I can't wait to watch that. How much of the story does it cover? I don't want to watch the same story told three different ways between the 90s anime, Crystal, and Live Action...so I was thinking of starting the live action show when I'm a ways past the story in the 90s show so I can mentally separate the two.

We set up a rule recently to spoiler tag big stuff, but minor plot points like Mamoru being Tuxedo Mask are allowed. So he should be good unless he backtracks all the older posts.

And the Live-Action covers the Queen Beryl storyline only, but the Live-Action has a LOT of story differences to the anime.

So I can watch the live action show anytime even if I'm watching Crystal and the 90s anime at the same time? My head's already spinning a little as to what happened in which show between the two.

The first few episodes of the live action show are similar to the other versions, then it goes in another direction. Big parts of that shows storyline and a few characters are exclusive to it.
On very big difference is that Minako shows up much earlier, not a spoiler because she's in the very first scene of the show even before the opening credits roll.

I think because of the differences it can be watched at the same time but considering there are only 8 subbed original anime episodes left to be released on hulu I'd wait until after the season is finished there and you've seen it all.

Maybe it's because I'm older while watching this vs. the original series, or maybe the original dub altered how things looked, but it's only here in Crystal that I've really seen the general outcast status of all of the Inner Senshi (Ami's such a cold genius weirdo, Rei's such a creepy priestess, Makoto's so strong for a girl, how scary!)

This is also the first time I've really seen first hand the positive qualities of Usagi. In the original show I feel like Usagi got better as time went on, and my dislike of her as a character mellowed out as I got older, but Crystal is the first time I've really seen her positive qualities of being able to make people feel welcome if they seem to really need help, her cheery almost innocent demeanor, and her loyalty to her friends (I suppose the last quality was pretty prominent in the show though, the Sailor Moon S finale comes to mind).

I'm very much enjoying this fresh perspective on Usagi and the rest of the Scouts. This anime is far from perfect but it's proving to be a worthy part of the Sailor Moon media library.

I liked Usagi's development in the first anime and would say she kept getting better until SuperS, where it felt like they were regressing her to be on Chibiusa's level. She was better in Stars, but I'm not a big fan of that season.

The "R" Movie (not 100% canon, but close enough) spelled out the outcast status of the Inner Senshi (including Minako, the lonely Soldier of Justice), but it's presented as a thing of the past because it took Usagi about five seconds to fix each one of them.

They'll skip it. Just like they skipped the charred corpses in chapter 5 and just like they'll skip
Mamoru's melting face
.
They skipped it because of Takeuchi.
Killing the Shitennou without properly characterizing them
has been a sore spot for her for a very long time. Don't think they'll skimp out on the series' darker moments just because of how they have re-written a few sections.

That was a good episode...though...
I swear that Usagi basically told Tuxedo Mask that she was Sailor Moon, but then a few minutes later, she doesn't want to transform in front of him because he'd find out.

It seems like any time they have to add dialog/content, they end up somehow contradicting themselves. And there was a lot added here :\

I really hate how they took out Mamoru helping her with healing the town.

He encouraged her before she left but I like that she did the actual healing by herself, it was a good change imo.

I loved this episode, I wish it would air weekly.

Kind of goes against the theme of the manga though :\ I know they want Crystal to be all girl power and such, but the reality is many times in the manga, Usagi and Mamoru gain their power from each other.

really love the fast pace of Crystal. There is at least some sense of urgency and danger from the enemies. Would love to see more interactions between the girls but I am fine with it right now.

Oh, and and real-time attacks are a godsend here. Makes the battle faster and better. Loved the added fightscene between Mercury/Mars/Jupiter against Zoisite.

Yeah for some reason Toei still goes out of his way to make sure he still voices Yamcha, but not Mamoru? Oh well, like you said another time, dodged a bullet really.

And wouldn't want to voice Mario, regardless of looks? Those other two links are questionable, though.

Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 6:

Hey it is sometimes hard to be awake at 6:00 AM so I get to take a less real time approach this episode. Indeed, here is one of those points that at once looks like a set up that could have been any given episode of the 1990s TV series yet I can't specifically remember this playing out there. Of course a big reason for that is they are actually combing objectives in this series, which I appreciate.
I have to say watching this alongside the original series does make me understand how butchered the character of Usagi was in the beginning. Yea, she got somewhat better over the course of several seasons She has many of the same flaws but the manga/Crystal has done a much better job in showcasing her positive quality and they don't feel shoehorned or forced. Also, kudos for Crystal for asking some questions about Sailor V that admittedly probably should have been asked earlier, but nonetheless addressed. Also, Luna, you had a secret Sentai base and you didn't tell anybody? These again seems like something that should have been made known earlier. Let me see, I see we have ditched the last pretenses of secret identity for the moment. Well, got to have it one way or the other, Clark Cent or realism. Also, bravo Dark Kingdom for not sticking to a formula. This is one of the things that is really pissing me off about the Kunsite Arc in the original series. I understand why the MotW stuff is happening on a meta level but in series this is all really stupid. Anyway, this is how Queen Beryl chooses to unfurl herself before the Guardians. Though she can't die yet, that honor is reserved for Sailor V, who is actually around, doing Batman stuff.
Anyway, overall an alright episode the feels kind of week to the last couple of ones. Also, nice to see that TOEI has gotten a wrangle on things and everything looks consistent for the most part.

Sailor Moon Crystal 06

This is where it's completely different from classic then. Tuxedo Mask reveals everything (even some stuff through the media), Luna reveals everything and even Queen Beryl takes action. Never read the manga, so seeing Sailor Moon just running away like that was surprising.
